I made a travel agent snarfle, the next one may die from hysterical sniggering, please tell me, is this is possible or am I doomed to kill a travel agent with laughter?

Can we go somewhere the last week of March that's warm, won't break a 400pp budget (spread over 5 people) and have stuff to do that isn't totally weather dependant?

We have a 9, 7 and 5 year old dds. That budget will be pushing the boat out for us at 2k, but from the reaction I'm guessing maybe not enough?

We haven't has a non UK holiday since kids and I would like to get warm :-)

In my dream its somewhere water sporty eg able to canoe/bodyboard/surf for us and the kids, or at least use our snorkels.

Save me from the mockery of travel agents
Save them from choking to death on their tea.

Help me obi wan mumsnet, you're my last hope

Do you have an idea of where you want to go? Canary Islands like Tenerife are pleasantly warm normally in March and as you are going last week of March should be pleasant.

I think you need to find out where you would like to go, do some research on the internet to find places that appeal and offer the things you would like and then go to the Travel Agent or book on-line with someone like Jet2 Holidays.

Ginnotgym · 01/01/2018 20:34

I'd say it's unlikely given that's Easter so probably peak prices...

Most flights will be a couple of hundred pounds I'd imagine, if you're willing to drive ferries will be cheaper (so France etc)

You may get a nice cottage in Cornwall or similar?

Would you consider camping?

Try one of the price comparison sites such as holiday supermarket.

Good luck!

NancyJoan · 01/01/2018 20:36

Easter holidays, flights for five will cost approx £2000. Can you wait for summer, and drive to France?

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 01/01/2018 20:36

Don’t use a travel agent. Use the websites they are always cheaper. Several hundred pounds in most cases.

There are 4 of us and we managed to get two weeks in Greece in the summer holidays for 2018 for less than £2000 total. Self catering.

CJCreggsGoldfish · 01/01/2018 20:39

Does it have to be March? If you're willing to drive, Eurocamp can be pretty reasonable, but you're probably looking at summer for better weather.

tissuesosoft · 01/01/2018 20:40

On the beach.co.uk has a few in the canaries for flights and all inclusive near a beach for £1850. (That's based on flying from London)

tissuesosoft · 01/01/2018 20:41

Oh and that includes two hold luggage (plus a carry on each) and transfers.

sm40 · 01/01/2018 20:43

If you want to go independently and want to go in Peak time, try flying indirect. We are going to Greece in half term and the flights cost £2.5k (for 4) easy jet but £1k via Germany. 2 hours in Germany to save that much money! Sky scanner is your friend but book direct though the same company (so need flights by the same people/codeshare ) and then you are covered if a flight changes and you can't connect anymore.

caroldecker · 01/01/2018 20:46

flights £105 each

air bnb £548 for week

Total transport and accommodation less than £1,100

Loyly · 01/01/2018 20:47

I would also say avoid an agent. Book flights direct and book hotel/apartment direct.

If you would like Morocco, Agadir is a good place for surfing.

SkyIsTooHigh · 01/01/2018 20:58

I've just had a quick look on Tui and there are a few in the canaries eg Catalonia Punta del Rey, Tenerife, £372 pp AI if you can leave Fri 23rd Mar. I'd get to somewhere warm as cheaply as you can (there are cheaper options for SC but then you'll spend more out there of course) and hire a car to drive to watersports places if you have to. There are also 5 night options but obviously to the Canaries the flight is a large part of the cost so it's not very efficient.

Link to search results, not sure this will work

kingjofferyworksintescos · 01/01/2018 21:42

Thomas cook has les or angers beach resort and bungalows in Tunisia 20 March 7 days all inclusive for £1724 , looks like a really active kids club etc

kingjofferyworksintescos · 01/01/2018 21:43

Les orangers

namechange2222 · 01/01/2018 21:50

Morocco? Lovely weather in March

ifIsaynodontjustaskdad · 01/01/2018 22:13

Thanks. Sadly has to be that week and no other for the entire year, due to dh work and kids holidays.

Canaries seem to come up a lot, t i dint know which island even.

Flying via Germany seems a great idea thanks

I want to go somewhere warm. We've done UK holidays only for 11 years, I've glampedal, camped and air b n bd but the weather sucks. Even more so in march. I realise it's peak time but we have kids so we can't go not peak time

3boys3dogshelp · 01/01/2018 22:31

Have a look at jet2.com - they tend to be pretty reasonable. I agree that the canaries are a good bet weather wise for March. I haven’t been but everyone I know who has been to Lanzarote has enjoyed it. Does your £2k budget include your spending money/money for food? I think it’s tight but probably doable.

SkyIsTooHigh · 01/01/2018 23:46

You said last week in March, 23-30th sounds pretty last week to me! W/c Sat 31st Mar would be first week in April surely. Hope you find something.

Margomyhero · 02/01/2018 08:23

Last year me and DH went to Portugal the last week in March.

We had a few days on the Algarve and then a few more in Lisbon. The weather was great. I wasn't expecting it to be so warm. There were plenty of folk sunbathing on the beaches.

Obviously it isn't guaranteed - but I think you may get cheaper holiday prices than to the Canaries, as the flights are much shorter. Worth a look.

ohanabanana · 02/01/2018 09:06

Lanzarote is way nicer than I expected it to be, I can highly recommend. In the larger resorts it is relatively cheap to eat out - eg 3 euros each for a massive English breakfast. Lots of Brits but I’m a nice way, not lager louts! Because it is quite a small island the transfers are short. Volcano tours are actually really interesting and educational for kids and there are loads of sailing trips, water sports etc. There are often deals on the Holiday Pirates website.

namechange2222 · 02/01/2018 10:19

OP I've stayed in Taroudant which is about a half hour drive from Agadir. The weather In March was wonderful

Tatie3 · 02/01/2018 10:23

We have booked a villa in the Costa Del Sol for the 5 of us including flights, airport parking and hire car for just under £2000 with James Villas. This is during the Easter holidays too!

Chewbecca · 02/01/2018 10:29

Which week exactly are you looking at? Last week in March is the week before Easter holidays here so flights are not as ££ as they are 1st week in April so you should be fine.

I'd snap up the flights caroldecker linked to to Fuerteventura at just over £100 each & work on finding accommodation from there. There is no need to fly via Germany at that price.

Newyearnewyew · 02/01/2018 14:16

def avoid agents unless its a sale always much more expensive!

ifIsaynodontjustaskdad · 02/01/2018 22:46

You are all amazing, we've used the splitting flight tactic and we're off to an air b and b in the national park in furry a ventura and we're in budget. Thank you so much Grin
