we've got a good offer on a holiday this weekend but never sure whether Turkey is safe. Is it?

safe from what?

mosschops30 · 22/08/2006 14:53

no, but i wouldnt book a holiday anywhere at the moment, cant face flying.

The sensible part of me thinks though that Turkey would be as safe as anywhere else

MrsBadger · 22/08/2006 14:58

They haven't had a terrorist incident since last summer, which on that scale makes them as safe as the UK.

If we all end up staying at home with our heads under the duvet because we're so scared, then the terrorists will have won. Don't let them.

Heathcliffscathy · 22/08/2006 15:00

cutekids if you would go to london (or live in london) it is far safer than that.

and you're still likelier to be kicked to death by a donkey than die in a terrorist incident.

however, if you won't feel safe, you won't have much of a holiday....

Sugarpop · 22/08/2006 15:01

If you are worried about terrorism you have as much chance of an attack in the uk at the moment most likely more than in Turkey! Just think how many hundreds of planes fly daily and security has never been tougher, I reckon you are probebly safer to travel now than ever before!

Turkey is a lovely country with the friendliest most helpful kind people I have ever met! Get it booked and have a great time. Its really really child friendly too, fab food sightseeing etc don't miss the chance bet it will be twice the price next year!

cutekids · 22/08/2006 15:17

thanks for that everyone! I'm trying to get us all away for a week and my Hubbie seems quite keen on Turkey. I've never actually fancied it really but the travel agent was bubbling over with enthusiasm about it-especially for kids! Think I should go ahead and book then!
Yes,by the way, it is the terrorism that's worrying me a little but I know that it's true...we can't be sure we're safe anywhere anyway can we?!

what part of turkey are you thinking of going?

Sugarpop · 22/08/2006 15:23

I've been several times to Turkey and loved each place I've been to, would love to buy a house there. Have made so many friends who keep in touch. Go with the flow you'll love it. My friend came with us the other year and she really didn't like the idea of the place and she's been twice ayear since and is in the middle of moving out there now. Beware you might like it too much!

I think she must have had a premonition, i wonder if she went..it's only a few kilometres from Marmaris

Alibaldi · 28/08/2006 15:42

Don't want to be a scaremonger but this was just on the bbc headlines bombs

jollymum · 28/08/2006 15:43

We're supposed to be going to Ichmeler in October. Now I don't know what to do.

moondog · 28/08/2006 15:44

Turkey is lovely!

I am there (here?) right now.

It's fine and yopu will be treated so well.Turks are darlings and Turkey is amazing.

hulababy · 28/08/2006 15:45

I'd have thought it was just as safe as it is to go to most places nowadays. The bombs have happened now. Chances of them happening again in same place are less likely, surely?

HyacinthB · 28/08/2006 22:41

But didn't they have a bombing incident last summer holiday period(2005) too?

mysonsmummy · 28/08/2006 22:58

i am going with ds 4 on thursday. tbh i am scared and dont really want to go now - not sure if thats becasue everyone is saying you cannot take him there its not bloody safe! its right chances of it happening again are low - but still worried. not sure what to do for best.

moondog · 28/08/2006 23:03

MSM,you'll be fine.

I live in a part of Turkey with a heavy police and army presence due to PKK (Kurdish Independence fighters) activity.

Tanks pass my flat all the time, military hepicopters constantly fly overhead, asnd I am stopped at a roadblock every single day,yet I feel perfectly safe.

Where are you going??

UrsulatheSeawitch · 28/08/2006 23:08

moondog, your area isn't frequented by tourists much though, is it?

I'm usually pretty sanguine about these things but after today's incidents I have to say I would be pretty concerned

MSM, whatever you do I hope you will be OK. Tough call atm. Hope ck and family are OK too.

moondog · 28/08/2006 23:10

Errr no,but there is a lot of PKK activity directed at Turkish authorities.

I have heard gunfire on quite a few occasions.

UrsulatheSeawitch · 28/08/2006 23:20

The current incidents are aimed at tourists though, rather than the Turkish govt, aren't they? I imagine 99.99% of visitors will be safe, but I would be worried if I was going to a tourist centre.

macwoozy · 29/08/2006 01:00

Just my bloody luck, I'm going to Marmaris in a months time, I was really looking forward to it, I really need a stress free holiday, but what with the 3 bombs going off at Marmaris yesterday, I'm not so sure now.

kayleigh81 · 29/08/2006 08:09

im going to bodrum in 2 weeks with my 4 month old ds, after all these bombs i wasnt sure it was such a good idea, but at the end of the day they are still flying tourists over there and if the foreign office thought it wasnt safe they wouldnt allow you to go.

macwoozy · 29/08/2006 14:57

I'm not so sure, I want to be totally relaxed and I'm not sure I can be under the circumstances. It might sound like I'm over reacting but I'm currently seeing if I can swap the destination, although I expect I'll be paying a fair amount more for the privilege.

mysonsmummy · 29/08/2006 21:28

we are going to a first choice holiday village near dalaman - decided to go with it - wish me luck!! lol
