Turkey or one of the Canary Islands?

We went to Gran Canaria last year. It was lovely. Our first holiday abroad for some time. It was so great I am working masses of overtime to try to get another one this year. I will probably go for a package deal and of the cheapest type. What I was wondering though - is Turkey cheaper than the Canary Islands? We ate out once last year and did one trip. It would be nice to get more outings and nights out from the budge.

Shamelessly bumping.

A lot of people love Turkey ... However, if you have teen girls, if you are blonde or have blue eyes the hassle is horrendous

We would never ever go back, dreadful dreadful men there sadly - not all, but enough, bit like it was in Tunisia 18 yrs ago

canaries are just normal modern men, love the Islands

magimedi · 18/01/2014 16:45

Turkey is certainly cheaper than GC. The Turkish Lira was about 2.8 to the £ last year & is now around 3.5

You can eat out really well & cheaply in Turkey - if you go where the locals go.

But - if you are going in Juy/August it will be VERY hot, quite often 35C +

Have you thought to price an apartment and flights separate?

It might work out cheaper, as if your getting 2 bed apartment and say there only 4 peep you have to pay supplement with package.

What I have done in past is look at brochure seen place I like and put search in for apartment of the name on internet then checked prices of flights and prices together and see of owner does transfer from airport. If not you can find these on net also under taxi transfer from ?? When you get your price together ring travel agent with same details of where you going and see what price they can do it for.

nkf · 18/01/2014 16:46

Teen girls yes. That would be a worry. Which island do you like?

I hadn't thought of pricing separately. Not sure why. A package just felt safe if you know what I mean. It's just the children and me and my ex used to handle the holidays and he was very good at it.

What age are your children and how old?

I've done lots of hold this way, and your still in the same apartments as if you were with a holiday tour company.

When you have found an apartment have a read of reviews on tripadvisor
Web page just put name of apartment in also on the page just remembered it gives you about 4 companies doing the same apartment and tells you the cheapest you will be shocked at the difference.

Last year it was just under £800 or thereabouts for seven nights in a 3* self catering apartment on a complex in Gran Canaria. That included flighs and transfer. Do you think I could have got it cheaper?

That was three of us.

Thinking about returning to Turkey makes me do a little shudder of horror. Have you considered lanzarote? We've just come back and enjoyed it immensely.

Depends when you went May July / August or oct or out of school hols?

Was it I bed or two bed apartment

Apartment only?

nkf · 18/01/2014 17:23

MrsSmith, I'd consider all the islands really. I was just wondering about getting the most bang for my buck really.

Does the hassle you get for having blonde hair blue eyes extend to little boys or is it only teen girls. We are going to Turkey in October and my boys HATE attention and being made a fuss of

clio51 · 18/01/2014 17:33

Have you got a date in August
And are you kids tots or teens as prices might be different

McFox · 18/01/2014 17:34

I agree on turkey not being the best option with teen girls. I went with a friend when we were 19 and the constant harassment was horrendous. We were groped in tje hotel by the staff, in the streets etc. I would never go back.

nkf · 18/01/2014 17:36

Teens and I have most of the school holidays to choose from.

I used to be TA what airport will be using

VivaLeBeaver · 18/01/2014 17:43

Agree, with previous posts. I'd never go back to places like Turkey, Egypt, Tunisia. Especially as a single mum and especially with teen girls.

Only Canary island I've been to is Tenerife which I really liked. Beautiful island. We stayed a bit down the coast from Playa Americas so could avoid that delight. I hired a car and there's loads to do on the island, drive into the national park and see the volcano, go whale watching, we went to Loro Parc but I hadn't realised they had captive orcas so not sure I could really recommend it. When I read about the islands I thought Tenerife had the most to do.

VivaLeBeaver · 18/01/2014 17:43

And of course the amazing Siam Park in Tenerife.

westl · 18/01/2014 17:50

Have you thought about Greece? It's lovely and probably cheaper than Canary Islands. Are you able to book last minute? You can get some amazing deals that way. I find Thomson are good for last minute package deals and less hassle than booking separately.

nkf · 18/01/2014 17:55

I live in London so any of the London airports. This is very kind of you. What else? I don't like nightclubs or themed nights or anything like that. Basically, we just swim a lot and walk on the beach and chat and cook food. I read a lot. I don't like driving but am perfectly okay about taking public transport.

Been looking and cheapest is roughly £950 up
Plus I had to guess ages so put 10. 14

Flights are roughly upwards of £170 gatwick

All depends what your preference is obviously you want the nearest airport so less cost getting there. Plus are you bothered what time flight is 6am to early or night flight all depend on price

Have you considered May might be cheaper but kids only get week then don't they?

TalkinPeace · 18/01/2014 22:41

looking at Antalya for Easter
DD is nearly 16 - she and I are blonde
is it really that bad?

we'd do flights and airbnb so no hotels / resorts
