Turkey or one of the Canary Islands?

We went to Gran Canaria last year. It was lovely. Our first holiday abroad for some time. It was so great I am working masses of overtime to try to get another one this year. I will probably go for a package deal and of the cheapest type. What I was wondering though - is Turkey cheaper than the Canary Islands? We ate out once last year and did one trip. It would be nice to get more outings and nights out from the budge.

Lanzarote was surprisingly nice. I love Greece though!

I figured about £900 plus for 10 days or 2 weeks. Last time we went for seven nights. Because of the long journey, that was effectively only five full days there. So I would like to go a bit longer. It will come down to money in the end. It does look as if it's hard to get it cheaper than a cheap package.

I won't have the cash by May.

One thing is decided though. No to Turkey. Even if it is cheaper, I want to feel relaxed and I won't if I am worrying about teen girls being hassled.

I have to stick up for Turkey here. If you go to one of the British favoured resorts like Marmaris you will possibly get hassled but if you go to a nicer resort you wont have a problem. Turkish people are very friendly and although the men can be a bit flirty sometimes as long as you make it clear you aren't interested they are fine. I have never had anything but respect from the men and I have been going for over 20 years. I spent time there alone too and the guys out there looked after me very well, they were very kind.

I now have 2 girls and we have spent lots of time in Turkey and I will have no problem taking them when they are older.

Just avoid Marmaris and you will be fine.

I did go to the Canary Islands but spent half the time wishing I was in Turkey, I didn't find the people anywhere near as friendly and the food wasn't as good. I wouldn't go back.

have booked flights to Turkey .... now to decide where to stay .... don't 'do' resorts : will rent a house in a small town - so am looking forward to it

Tenerife - we stayed in Puerto on the north coast - a real town, not a resort. wonderful.

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 21/01/2014 12:03

Where are you flying to Talkinpeace?

We have flights booked to but haven't decided where to stay either Smile

OP, Tenerife is lovely and the bus service is very good and very cheap, especially if you buy the pre paid cards (bonobus). Playa de las Americas is the very big 'brits on the piss resort' but will have lots of choice, so might be good if you are on a budget.

Los Cristianos is next to PDLA and is quieter/more family orientated, still probably has lots of choice and well priced accomodation etc.

Have a look at your favoured low cost airlines package offerings. We use jet2holidays a lot and went to Tenerife and got a week's B+B in a 4 star spa hotel for DP and I for less than £200 more than the flights alone.

I quite fancy Lanzarote next - Playa Blanca seems to be the favoured resort on here, but I think Costa Teguise is the main resort.

Try asking on the moneysavingexpert forums if you are looking for good value, although I'm not sure if you would have missed the boat flights wise if you haven't booked yet. Sometimes on Mumsnet, a lot of posters are looking at the luxury end of the market.

sootica
flight is to Dalaman ... have just got guide books so will decide soon.

Resorts are where you meet other tourists. Old towns are where you find out about the place.
That is why we liked Puerto : real local people running businesses other than tourism.

Been to Turkey loads. Never experienced anything other than respect from local people.

Have to totally agree with Sootica. My niece lived in gran canaria so have visited loads. Have been to the other Canary Islands over the years . I would chose Turkey over every one. The Turkish people are the most friendly I have met. Also think you get much better value for money. I have taken ds12 on my own many times over the years and never have hassle from Turkish men. Only hassle i got was women thinking I'm going to steal their husband if I dare speak to them by the pool.
