How much will your summer holiday cost you roughly?

Majority of people in my dc's school will be heading for Florida this year on holiday-we wouldn't be able to stretch to that but are hoping to have some sort of European holiday in the school holiday time.

Just wondering If I am kidding myself about prices a bit -How much does everyone roughly spend on a fortnight in the sun. Maybe I should have budgeted more?

We are having three holidays this year, one in april in spain, one in july/ august in portugal- this is our main summer holiday. We also have a week away in the october half term in france.

Dh and i are going away for a short european break in may for a special occassion and we are all going to edinburgh in the half term break for four nights!
It seems like a lot, and it is, but holidays and trips away is what we spend our disposable income on.

I would say we have spent around 4 k in total which is not half bad!
I'm very savvy when it comes to scouting out best prices for holidays, and we always book our flights early.

Also, our week in france is staying with friends, so no accomadation costs there, and tunnel already booked with tesco vouchers.
Our week in spain, we only paid for the apartment, as we used airmiles to pay for our flights.

Dh and i are also going away for a night in a couple of weeks on a cheap groupon deal to a nice hotel with dinner and breakfast includedSmile.
Almost forgot we are going to a music festival right at the begining of the summer holidaysGrin
I love holidays!

EldonAve · 22/01/2014 14:55

I expect ours to cost around £7K for 4 weeks in Europe

twothousandandfourteen · 22/01/2014 15:02

feeling quite proud that have just booked a week in Aug in a cottage for 275 pounds, going to have 3 nights in Paris to do some sightseeing total Inc Ferry will be under 500 pounds

twothousandandfourteen · 22/01/2014 15:10

should have said the cottage is.near beach in Normandy

Whistleblower0 · 22/01/2014 15:21

Wow, twothousand, that's not bad going for a week in the peak summer holidays!

TwoJackRussellsandababy · 22/01/2014 15:30

Caravan holiday here Grin

The cost depends whether you add in a proportion of the initial cost of the van or not Wink

Two weeks, couple of days in Chester, week outside London, couple of days in York is the plan, travelling from East Scotland I don't fancy trying to get to London in one go.

I reckon the site fees will be about three hundred max, maybe the same for petrol and the same again for food. I'd add say two hundred on top for doing touristy stuff sour summer holiday shouldn't cost us more than £1100 I hope!

We went to Washington, D.C. Last summer so it's a payoff for our family, one fab holiday abroad followed by two years of uk holidays - it better not rain this summer!!!!

twothousandandfourteen · 22/01/2014 15:54

thanks whistleblower! am used to Camping so a fairly rustic gite and Basic Hotel room not a problem. will not have much luxury but will be able to visit lots of Lovely places, dc's can try french food etc

Chewbecca · 22/01/2014 16:04

We do v expensive holidays some years and much cheaper others.
This summer we're going to Vancouver, bit of cruising and a bit of driving/staying in the area and will spend about £10k probably.
Last year we hired an apartment in northern Spain and drove there, apartment cost about £1000, travel cost probably £500.
My cheapest option (when I'm saving for a big one) is French campsite holidays which are, in fact, possibly DS's favourite (though he does love to cruise). We tend to drive and rent a mobile home direct from the campsite.

Best1sWest · 22/01/2014 19:03

Last year we did 2 weeks in the Algarve self catering in August, cost about £2800 for four (DCs count as adults). Plugs around another £1000 for food and trips. We eat out but not expensively every night. Also a trip to Paris for the four of us at Easter, cost around £1500 for four nights.

The year before we did 10 nights in Florida and 4 in New York. The cost for flights and accommodation was about £4300 for all of us however we did spend a lot on tickets for trips and attractions. However it was the most fantastic holiday ever. I've never laughed so much. Totally exhausting but so many fab memories.

Not planned this years yet as I am waiting for an op but thinking of Scotland.

colleysmill · 22/01/2014 20:52

notjustamummy I think its fab :) but it isn't everyone's cup of tea. Some of our friends think we are bonkers (which we probably are to be fair)

I have dreams of taking the van abroad when.the dc are older but at the moment UK is probably more realistic

saresywaresy2 · 08/05/2014 08:03

This is such a great thread. I was just googling holiday prices and it came up. Really good ideas. I love holidays and love all the planning.
This year we are going to montenegro.
£600 for flights to croatia with monarch
£700 for apartment through homeandaway
we will need to hire a car about £250 and spends god knows - would like to do a bit of eating out but we also have a fabulous balcony overlooking kotor bay so will be quite happy eating in.

The reason i was looking was that i'm trying to price up all inclusive holidays for next may half term in turkey. I like to be organised! Was wondering if people think the early booking and free child places are genuine? I can find a week all inclusive for 4 of us under £2000 in places we would like to go, we are all v picky! but then when i compare with prices for may this year i think late booking is cheaper. So maybe still better to wait? But, I guess you don't get the choices? Anyone any thoughts on this?
I am peeved because found the perfect spot on thomas cook - actually 10 nights all inc for £1800 for the 4 of us but when i went to book the price shot up by £300. It makes me want to boycott thomas cook, but the cheaper companies haven't got may 2015 on yet...
to wait or not to wait???

Disneyland in June, 2 adults 2 kids.

Hotel and tickets - £800
Train to London - £100 ish
Hotel in London 2 nights - £200
Eurostar - ??? Can't remember!
Spending money - £6-700 I guess

Normally we rent a cottage in UK.

306235388 · 08/05/2014 12:57

Think Eurostar about £4-500 because we're going premier.

StillWishihadabs · 08/05/2014 13:04

We are taking our bikes to France :) going by train 4 nights in Paris then the dordogne for a week. Total cost travel and hotels : £1400 we usually budget £100/day for a mixture of s/c and meals out so total £2500 for 10 days.

Tenrec · 08/05/2014 13:05

A week in the Lake District, self catering:
Cottage, £650
Food for the week: £150
Activities: most of the stuff is free with walking and so on, but probably about £280
Petrol £120
Spending money: £280

£1480, but I'm probably going to cave in on some meals or gifts, so maybe £1550 or so?

MrsDavidBowie · 08/05/2014 13:14

Me, Dh, ds 15 and his mate are going to Portugal in July for one week in a villa.
We eat out 6 nights.
Flights 1400
Villa £2000
Car plus parking at airport £400

Meals/drinks/ice creams/waterpark £1000
So not much change from £5k really for a week

Johnogroats · 08/05/2014 13:39

We are (first time ever) going to NY and Florida this summer. For 4 the bill is about 10k and that does not include food. It is an exceptional year as DH received a large bonus.

Usually we go to France. We are lucky in that we have a small house (no pool, but near a lake and other pools). We rent it to friends for 350/ week. The ferries vary, but usually ferry and travel to SE France costs about 500. That may include a night in a cheap hotel. And then you have food...we mostly self cater, but will eat out a few times. Our guests for 2 weeks in July / Aug will therefore pay about 1200 plus spends...but most activities there are cheap (French Alps).

Crutchlow35 · 08/05/2014 17:58

Week AI (not ideal but good facilities for DS) in Cyprus for £1200 - got a free kids place.

RufusTheReindeer · 08/05/2014 18:03

We went to Portugal two years ago and it cost about 6k (5 of us in a villa) for two weeks

Florida this year and it will probably be 12k (ish) that's for 3weeks

arna · 10/05/2014 00:28

Half term coming up - flights x 4 to Italy £800. Dithered big time over where to stay so finally decided to try out one of kid friendly resorts on the Italian Adriatic. Mobile homes seemed to have all been reduced to half price now by most of the operators so I've stopped dithering and booked a 3bed one in a central location for just £250! Trying out a Dutch operator rather than the uk ones.

ThatBloodyWoman · 10/05/2014 00:31

Under £500 all in -a weeks camping in the uk for four, with various outings.

arna · 10/05/2014 00:36

Forgot airport parking - £30. Cattery fees - £100 and maybe car hire too which I haven't decided on yet so say £250. So approx £1.5k excluding spending/food.

HicDraconis · 10/05/2014 06:21

Summer holidays over Christmas for us (2ad 2ch) - thinking of coming back to the UK for 4 weeks. Will cost around $15k for flights, then we have to add accommodation etc; will stay with family occasionally but a week in a London hotel at the end, a week in a holiday cottage for everyone over Christmas/NY, some B&B accom when visiting friends - don't see us doing it for less than $25k (around £12,500) not including food. That doesn't include dog kennels, sightseeing, holiday spends, Legoland... At least we'll be visiting in UK term time so queues won't be so bad!

I've just got back from a work related week in Singapore - $10k (£5k) for flights and hotel for one adult. Was great though.

EyeMyrrhSlapHer · 10/05/2014 09:27

Urgh Threads like this make me realise how much I am missing out on.

I have panic disorder and cant/wont fly so all our 'holidays' are in the UK.

Depressing ! Particularly as money is not an issue.

Luckily my kids don't miss out too much as I have family in the US who they have visited several times. My older DC has been to LA, Vegas and Texas over 12 times!.

FortyFacedFuckers · 10/05/2014 09:38

We (DP, DS & I) are doing 2 weeks AI in Tenerife for £3000 (although taking DS out of school 3 days before end of term to get that price. We will take around £1000 spending money so £4000 all in.
