How much will your summer holiday cost you roughly?

Majority of people in my dc's school will be heading for Florida this year on holiday-we wouldn't be able to stretch to that but are hoping to have some sort of European holiday in the school holiday time.

Just wondering If I am kidding myself about prices a bit -How much does everyone roughly spend on a fortnight in the sun. Maybe I should have budgeted more?

£0.

DH freelances and we can't afford a holiday or the time he would have to take off work.

The only "holiday" we have ever had together was 2 days after our wedding in a hotel a couple of miles from where we got married. It's shit, and I feel sorry for DS1 in particular as he has never had a holiday with us as far as he remembers - he does go away with his Dad for a week over summer though. DS2 has never been away but is too little to mind (and would probably hate the break in routine)

This thread has made me feel a lot better about my expensive mortgage! We can't easily take holidays (I am self employed) but moved into a place we love so don't feel like we need one too much. I didn't realise how spenny it was!

lljkk · 18/01/2014 21:37

Wow, I can't believe that £4k for disney is "cheap".
But then I'm used to it as a single day trip. And wouldn't want to do it any other way.
£4k. Shock Think I need to go lie down.

alma123 · 18/01/2014 21:52

It is about the cheapest way to do it for a fortnight holiday to Florida. Yes, not a cheap holiday by any stretch, but way cheaper than being at Disney. You can't really compare the cost of a day trip with the cost of a fortnight's holiday, can you?

Rosvita · 18/01/2014 22:22

My friend spent 12K there last year for 2 weeks and I budgeting for 8K for our 2 week hol there next year.will probably be a once-in-a-lifetime thing for us as working and budgeting very hard to afford it the once let alone repeat visits!

ArgumentsatChristmas · 18/01/2014 22:43

Planning a bigger summer holiday than normal this year - 4 weeks in California. It is wickedly expensive though as there are four of us and the kids are adult sized now. The quotes are coming through at around £12k

lljkk · 19/01/2014 09:09

Ah, Florida makes sense, I thought that was EuroDisney! And I presume that the whole fortnight wasn't spent at Disneyland.

It will cost about £8k for 6 of us to go to California/AZ for 3.5 weeks, we're probably doing less than Arguments@C. Not far different.

Creamycoolerwithcream · 19/01/2014 09:41

We spent a couple of days at Disney when we were in holiday in California. That worked well as not much more expensive than a theme park day out in England and the children visited ' Disney in America' as they called it at the time and we also got to do lots of other type of stuff as well as a cruise.

Piffpaffpoff · 19/01/2014 10:10

Two weeks in the Scottish highlands - cottage rental £1200, fuel probably about £150, I don't count cost of food trips etc as we'd be spending that at home anyway although let's add on an extra £50 because I tend to buy 2 weeks worth of M&s ready meals to save on cooking and they cost more than my usual Asda/Aldi shop.

So about £1400. Can't believe how much going abroad can cost based on some of the posts - don't think we'll ever manage to afford it. Sad

TSSDNCOP · 19/01/2014 10:40

Argument have you considered renting a motor home? I'm looking at it for 2015 as we want to take DS to California/AZ. I've camped on the West Coast before, and as a person that normally recoils in horror a camping, I have to say its very easy to do with excellent facilities.

bluebluecow · 19/01/2014 10:44

Going to Ibiza for 2 weeks in August, flights really cheap at £400 for 2 adults and 2 children, £60 transfer and £2000 for hotel all inclusive. About £300 spending money so that's under £3k. Not bad for 2 weeks AI~ in the summer hols...can't wait!

magentastardust · 19/01/2014 17:59

where about in Ibiza are you going Bluebluecow? Great price for flights!

atthestrokeoftwelve · 20/01/2014 06:43

annieorangutan · 20/01/2014 06:54

We book off alpharooms and can get a family of four for 2 weeks abroad for cheapee than most of these

I know people going Florida here and we are a low income area.

bluebluecow · 20/01/2014 06:56

we are going to cala llonga, gorgeous beach and we love it there. The price for the hotel is all meals and drinks for all of us for 2 weeks so that's quite cheap, the hotel's right on the beach too. I love ibizaSmile Smile

bluebluecow · 20/01/2014 06:57

the flights are with EasyJet. excellent bargains to be had if booked early.

atthestrokeoftwelve · 20/01/2014 06:58

bluecow i am used to all inclusive in other countries- Greece and turkey, usually much cheaper than Spain.

annieorangutan · 20/01/2014 07:00

I have booked another holiday as well for all 4 of us, all inclusive in Tunisia for £879 booked that in boxing day sale.Pn

colleysmill · 20/01/2014 08:43

It's been about 5 years since we last holidayed abroad (as a couple and out of school holidays) so I'm quite taken aback at the costs mentioned. Perhaps I am naive but I hadn't really realised how much more it is nowadays!

Our dc are still at an age where a beach is a beach as long as there is sand and sea and a holiday is anywhere away from home but this is our last year of holidaying outside school termtime. They are also still of an age where camping is fun!

We camp a lot in our campervan and tend to have lots of cheap holidays in the UK. Not booked our main holiday yet but last year we went to the isle of wight for a week out of season and camped for about 135 quid including ferry with spending money on top. The biggest costs for us are probably petrol costs as every van owner will know they like to drink fuel!

We try to average a weekend away every 4 - 6 weeks, sometimes just us, sometimes organised camper meet ups which can vary in price. The best weekends are the impromptu ones where you book on the Thursday and just jump in the van on a Friday after work.

Obviously you have to factor in the overall year costs for upkeep, repairs, MOT, tax and insurance and initial outlay but having had one I can't imagine life without the old girl.

Our holidays are probably not the holidays that other people dream of but it suits a couple of old hippies like us :) You can't beat that first early morning cuppa sat on the steps of the van looking out over a dewy field.

notjustamummythankyou · 20/01/2014 19:35

We have 2 small dcs the eldest of which has just started school, so for the first time we're having to stick to school hols.

Since the kids came along, we've just done UK hols and always self catering. This year we're doing a week's farm stay in a cottage in North Devon. The Farm has its own beach and smugglers cave so 4yo ds will be in his element.

Cost: £900 plus fuel to get there. We'll do an Internet food shop to be delivered so shouldn't be too much more than being at home (need to include some goodies! ). Then of course spending money. I reckon £1200 all in.

Dh was hyperventilating at the cost of a holiday in August now that ds is at school. I may have to show him this thread about what we could be spending!

Got me thinking though: I do so need some sun. I think it's time to sweet talk dfil into handing over the keys off his Mediterranean timeshare for a week ...

notjustamummythankyou · 20/01/2014 19:36

colley - we'd love to get a camper van. Sounds fab!

UsedToBeNDP · 20/01/2014 19:48

We're doing 2, week of May HT & week at end of summer hols. They will cost in region of £15-£17k in total (flights/accomplish/food/incidentals).

UsedToBeNDP · 20/01/2014 19:49

Accomplish?! Bloody autocorrect, that was supposed to be (flights/accom/food/incidentals).

Lilliput · 20/01/2014 19:51

We don't go away in the summer because of dh's work. Our family holiday is October and the last couple of foreign holidays have come in just under 2k for a week. Self catering in Lanzarote one year and B&B turkey the next.
Going to Crete this October. Paid £491 for flights and £850 for half board accommodation for the four of us.
