How much will your summer holiday cost you roughly?

Majority of people in my dc's school will be heading for Florida this year on holiday-we wouldn't be able to stretch to that but are hoping to have some sort of European holiday in the school holiday time.

Just wondering If I am kidding myself about prices a bit -How much does everyone roughly spend on a fortnight in the sun. Maybe I should have budgeted more?

We usually have 2 weeks in central or southern Europe in reasonable self catering accommodation (we can't stretch to a villa, but have done apartments, top of range Eurocamps caravan, that kind of thing). There's 4 of us. Somehow it always seems to cost £4,000 - £5,000 Confused.

Heathcliff27 · 15/01/2014 12:42

We normally have a couple of long weekends away with kids in a hotel plus our summer holiday which this year is a week in caravan in scarborough for 4

£500 for caravan (got it half price for booking and paying in full well in advance)
£150 approx diesel (travelling from north Scotland)
£??? For food/eating out/flamingo land etc. i suspect around the £1000 mark.

We have only ever taken caravan/hotel holidays in the UK with our kids. They have never been abroad and we have only been abroad once on our own since we met (I didn't go abroad until I was 21) BUT.... DH is 40 next year and we are going to Las Vegas child free Grin

Magnetstardust, don't leave the thread. No one said you were lying about people going on holiday. You may get some got ideas for places to go at good prices.

Ra88 · 15/01/2014 12:44

For 2 adults , a 5 yr old and a baby , 1 week somewhere like turkey it'll most likely cost us around £1300-1500 all inclusive 4*

Heathcliff27 · 15/01/2014 12:47

Oh and magenta, I believe I may be in the same area as you and yes everyone and their dog goes to Florida (except us)

bigTillyMint · 15/01/2014 12:47

It depends on what we decide to do. Last year 2 weeks AI in Turkey was £3,500 for 2 adults + 2 teens. Year before same in Sharm was £2,500. When they were little we camped in France for 3 weeks each summer for about £2,500.

magentastardust · 15/01/2014 12:48

Sorry -being a bit of a prat -just got a bit sensitive ,thinking people were questioning what I was saying, I am telling the truth honest! . I am a regular poster especially to the travel section wasn't trying to stir with my comments !

Unfortunately living in north scotland you can add a couple of hundred pounds per adult onto any holiday as our flight costs are extortionate up here.

Bowlersarm · 15/01/2014 12:51

Of course lots of people go on holiday to Florida! There is normally a while MN thread about it. Our Florida holiday cost us a mouth watering £10,000 or so.

We seem unable to travel cheaply for some reason, so limit the number of holidays we have rather than doing lots cheaply.

magentastardust · 15/01/2014 12:51

Las Vegas childfree-now that does sound like a fab holiday :)

School holiday prices are such a bugger aren't they-I remember the lovely days when DCs 1 and 2 were just little and we could go in June and September to quiet places and not spend a ridiculous amount.

That said I do think whatever you can afford on a holiday is worth it -nice to get a break /change of routine and relax for a bit!

OP posts:
Bowlersarm · 15/01/2014 12:51

....whole MN thread.....

magentastardust · 15/01/2014 12:53

Yes that's true, we sometimes try to travel down to Newcastle or Manchester to fly instead as can sometimes save us £800 or so for the whole family. Especially if you travel in the Scottish school hols before the English schools have broken up.

OP posts:
Heathcliff27 · 15/01/2014 12:55

Thats another reason we got a cheapish deal this year by going the first week in July before the English schools break up

MrsDavidBowie · 15/01/2014 12:55

We are going for a week in a villa in Portugal, 3 of us, probably about £4000.

lljkk · 15/01/2014 12:57

I've never had a fortnight inthe sun.
I was calculating that it would cost about £8k to take us all.

Assuming you didn't factor in the cost of my suicide from boredom after 6 days.
So I guess that's why not. Grin

higgle · 15/01/2014 12:59

We are a family of 4, became empty nesters this year. We would usually have one European holiday a year and a long weekend or out of season cottage break some other time. We used to look at 2 bedroomed places with shared pools, in France, Spain or (favourite) La Gomera. Always went somewhere quiet but accessible to airport and would usually spend about £1200 on flat/villa for 2 weeks, £400 car hire and £500 on flights.
It is all the airport parking, insurance kennel fees etc. that bump it up.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 15/01/2014 13:01

Not sure we'll get a summer holiday this year, disappointingly (waaaaaaahhhhhhhh). But, last year 2 weeks in Croatia came in at approx 2K for flights and appartement, both booked v early and subsequently at great prices. Spending probably about £800/900. Year before that 3K on two weeks in southern France keycamping. I live for my abroad summer holidays, so am very Sad at the prospect of not having one this year. Round here, people tend to go skiing in Feb, city break in one of the other half terms, then big holiday in summer, be that the US or Europe, so, yes, some people have a lot to spend on holidays Envy

Taffeta · 15/01/2014 13:06

School summer holidays Liguria 1 week 2 adults 2 children 7 & 10
Flights £450
Car hire. £250
Accommodation £1000

Breakfast is an extra £200, and obv will have other food on top, some petrol, airport parking.

So probably about £2.6k

CwtchesAndCuddles · 15/01/2014 13:18

Going to Spain for two weeks, flying from local airport, detached villa with private pool, and will hire a car for the duration.

Cost for 2 x adult, 2 X children = £2,000 for everything excluding spending money.

magentastardust · 15/01/2014 13:41

That's good going Cwtches!

I like these type types of threads as would never ask any of the people I know in RL what they spend on their holiday. Plus it's good for getting ideas for future years.

Rosvita · 15/01/2014 15:37

magenta I certainly wasn't having a dig/doubting you or anything - was just interested that's all-the oil thing makes sense. Going with a lot of the holiday budgets here I guess florida would cost approx twice people's regular holiday budget so maybe some people bi-pass a holiday one year to have a more extravagant one the next.
I remember the good old days when me and dh went on holiday for £250 each plus spending money. Now the kids are over 2 and the school hol rules brings it up considerably though! I always try and stick to around the 1.5K-2K budget if it's a Straightforward France/Spain etc holiday. If I'm spending 3K or more it would have to be somewhere I really wanted to go to-a but further afield like the Caribbean or something.i do understand of course that some people prefer to spend more on European holidays to stay at the best resorts etc - everyone has different criteria for their hols I guess.good thread.

kerala · 15/01/2014 15:41

Do you live somewhere attractive? We home exchange so pay travel costs only car and accommodation free. Last summer 2 weeks southern Italy for £500 (cost of 4 flights to puglia). This year two weeks in lanzarote with own pool and tennis court with car for £1k being our flights.

kerala · 15/01/2014 15:45

Yes as we home exchange go away for 2 half terms uk swaps essentially free. Lake District last Easter was gorgeous and also Paris in October. It's addictive but you need to be ok with strangers living in your house

JanePurdy · 15/01/2014 15:51

We go to Cornwall in the summer because we have a family holiday cottage there, we don't pay running costs for the cottage so it's just self catering/spending money - probably spend about £500 for a fortnight. Going there in Feb half term too (brr!).

Will do several camping weekends too when the sun shines.

Going to Abu Dhabi this Easter & have spent £1.5k on flights for 4 of us, accommodation will be free but will need spending money - haven't worked out how much that will be yet...
