How much will your summer holiday cost you roughly?

Majority of people in my dc's school will be heading for Florida this year on holiday-we wouldn't be able to stretch to that but are hoping to have some sort of European holiday in the school holiday time.

Just wondering If I am kidding myself about prices a bit -How much does everyone roughly spend on a fortnight in the sun. Maybe I should have budgeted more?

A week in a cottage in the UK in the south west which will be 800. Haven't worked out spends yet but will be trying to be economical but not miserly. We didn't go on holiday at all last year and now our luck has picked up a bit we are cautiously going back to it. I am quite shocked at how much some people are able to spend on holidays though, although good on them if they can afford it. It just never would have occurred to me even when more affluent!

makemineapinot · 17/01/2014 00:23

£1700 for 3 star half board in Crete, cos I get stung with lone parent and local airport supplements, plus we have to go in school holidays Sad Never mind the fact we'll never be up in time for breakfast!!!

Bunbaker · 17/01/2014 06:42

"We ferry to Calais at under £200, drive down as far as we can bear, another £100? and camp for 20 euros or under a night"

That isn't much of a holiday for us. OH loathes driving, and I'm not prepared to drive that far on my own, and we aren't fans of camping either. So we are prepared to spend more because we like to be as comfortable as we are at home.

Last year 4 of us ( 2 adults & 2 teenagers) we went to Gozo ( next to Malta) for 10 days in July.

Flights- £450
Villa- £380
Spending money £800
Car hire- £380

Total cost- £1900.

One of the best family holidays we have had.

Bunbaker · 17/01/2014 07:09

I agree Rudy. We have done the budget holidays, camping/staying in dire accommodation etc and aren't prepared to do it any more (old gimmers here Grin). Besides, trying to sleep under canvas when it is very hot is so uncomfortable, not to mention the noise other campers make. Then there is trailing across the campsite to the loos in the middle of the night, sharing the use of loos and showers with other people (shudder). And most importantly, OH attracts every biting insect there is and reacts very badly to bites so he would never camp.

Theas18 · 17/01/2014 07:46

I'm with alternativemonika. We do things as cheaply as we can. Seeing this thread is interesting though as I think we can just ease the budget up a bit LOL .

We have camped but not abroad. When going to france I trawl the owners direct type websites and would expect to pay less than £500 a week for 5 of us. Having said that I go for " quirky" - the sort of places that don't sell easily. Not with the sewage works at the back ( thanks google earth, we do check!) but rooms off rooms, bathroom in the basement etc. We've stayed in some lovely places as a result, eg where the whole place is built over the wine cave (in which you now park the car) with steps up to a lovely terrace.... but you could only stay with teens ( not that they say so) because the steep concrete steps just come up the middle of the terrace with no guard rail! But the place was huge- 3 kids all had own rooms!

If self catering I'm not sure if the food buget counts as " spends" as you'd have to eat at home LOL

This year I shall be asking MN for suggestions. It's a weird year... DS A levels so no going away at Whitsun, and got to be back for results day... so I have 2 separate weeks in the summer :( ( not to mention the awful fight for holiday dates at work).

I loves holidays!

MegBusset · 17/01/2014 07:55

Tbh we could afford to spend more but a) we like UK holidays and the DC LOVE staying in caravans/tents, and b) by not spending so much we can fit in a couple of holidays a year. So this year we have a week in the New Forest at Easter (caravan), a long weekend camping at Whitsun, the Lakes in August. Plus we will fit in some more camping over the summer, weather dependent.

I would rather have a 'little and often' approach than blow our annual budget on one week in August.

Bunbaker · 17/01/2014 07:59

We love holidaying in the UK and usually rent a cottage for a week somewhere. We have different expectations from a UK holiday though and tend to explore new places, go sightseeing etc rather than hope for good beach weather. We also take weather appropriate clothes.

atthestrokeoftwelve · 17/01/2014 08:16

For us a holiday is mostly about the sun. I live in SCotland which is darker/colder/wetter than the South of the UK.

We love a warm holiday abroad where I can wear dresses outside in the evening ( it's never warm enough to do that in Scotland)

There are amazing places to see on my doorstep, the Highlands, Orkney etc and have done a fair bit of travel here, but when we work so hard all year I don't want to be in a tent in a muddy field warming up a can of beans while it's raining sideways.

It's all about the sunshine for us and seeing spectacular and exotic sights.

ben5 · 17/01/2014 08:40

We live in Australia so summer holidays at the moment. We have just spent 10 days in Bali . ( Bali is like being in UK and going to Spain !!) we spent just under $10,000 ( which is about £5-6,000) which included 10 nights bed and breakfast in hotel , food, drinks, days out, tips everything really.

Mrswellyboot · 17/01/2014 08:47

I was going to suggest Gdansk and Sopot for a cheap holiday. (Poland) Now it is not an aquapark type holiday but if its just the meal and nice restaurants it would be cheaper.

Also Northern Spain is great for holidays. Fly into Santiago and go up to La Corona. It certainly wouldn't be the the 4k region.

I love bargain holidays :)

Mrswellyboot · 17/01/2014 08:48

Beach I meant

Northumberlandlass · 17/01/2014 08:52

We can't afford to go abroad every year. So, one year we go Youth Hostelling in UK, take 2 weeks off and drive around country spending few days here & there. Back home to regroup & wash clothes, then head to Scotland where we do similiar thing.

This year we are going to Dubrovnik (as I mentioned somewhere up the thread), in 2012 we went to Rome for a week.

Heathcliff27 · 17/01/2014 08:59

Just to give you an idea what its like when living in northern scotland, I have just priced 7 nights in Alcudia, majorca, self catering, in the first week of our school hols which is actually a bit cheaper as the english schools havent broken up yet.

Its a 3 star hotel so a bit mid range, is coming in at £1756 for 2 adults and 2 children, its flying from glasgow (cant get a flight nearer) so we will have to drive the 200ish miles to airport and back again so add in the diesel for that, plus the flight time on the outbound means we would need an overnight stay to get to airport on time rather than driving through the night.

Very little budget holidays here which is why we caravan all the time.

dustingfree · 17/01/2014 09:39

2 weeks on the west coast of Ireland in a 4 bed house. £1400. ferry across £50 (would be £400 but used Tesco vouchers) Will probably spend near on £800 on food/days out/petrol when there so all in I reckon 2.5K for the 5 of us.

hillbilly · 17/01/2014 10:05

Last summer cost us £1700. 11 nights in France including 2 stopovers and 9 nights camping. Fuel, tolls, spending money is included in that. We are a family of 4. This year we plan to do the same but for nearer to 3 weeks so I imagine it will cost around £2500.

Rosvita · 17/01/2014 11:08

Just to go off on a tangent slightly,as a pp has mentioned now needing to go in school hols due to the new rules I wonder if this/next year we will start to a) struggle to get time off work for annual leave in school holiday times (my work employs a lot of staff, the majority are women with school age children and only a set number of us can be off at any one time) and b) if by next year will see holiday prices in school holiday times inflated even more to compensate for the lost custom during term time.
Enjoying reading about everyone's great holidays to look forward to folks!

Runoutofideas · 17/01/2014 11:16

We are going to Thailand for 2 weeks at Easter. (2 adults, 2 children) - flights £2,000, villa and hotel about £1500 and about £700 spending money as it is cheap once we get there. All in about £4200. To me it feels better value than spending the same amount to go to Spain/Greece/Italy etc.

BigGlasses · 17/01/2014 11:20

I was desperate for a sunny holiday this year, but started looking into prices and was Shock at how much it would cost. I haven't been abroad since prekids and hadn't apprciated how much it would cost. Doesn't help that we would have to but 3 passports too!

So we collected the sun holiday tokens and have a week in July in Dumfries and Galloway in a residential caravan for £80. Ok, there will be petrol and food etc on top of that, so I reckon all in we will be £500 max

Mumof3xx · 17/01/2014 11:21

About 1500 in all

Caravan in uk for family of 5

Decided three small dc at an airport would be too much hard work

Bunbaker · 17/01/2014 12:07

"This year we are going to Dubrovnik"

We went last year. It is not cheap and you need to factor in the cost of visiting various sights in the old town. It is probably worth buying a card that gets you into several places. Prices are similar to here so budget accordingly. It is a fantastic place to visit though and we loved it. We stayed on the Lapad peninsula and got the bus in to visit the old town. You absolutely must walk around the walls as well.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 17/01/2014 12:13

Bunbaker, we stayed in Lapad too last summer!!!

Creamycoolerwithcream · 17/01/2014 12:23

I recommend taking a ferry to visit some of the islands from Dubrovnik.
