How much will your summer holiday cost you roughly?

Majority of people in my dc's school will be heading for Florida this year on holiday-we wouldn't be able to stretch to that but are hoping to have some sort of European holiday in the school holiday time.

Just wondering If I am kidding myself about prices a bit -How much does everyone roughly spend on a fortnight in the sun. Maybe I should have budgeted more?

In Belgium we go straight through from Easter to June 30th. No Whitsun week off though we get BHs for May Day, Whit Monday and Ascension. If you want a bargain worth look at Belgian and Dutch CP and www.landal.com and Sunparks as no school holidays here.

PortofinoRevisited · 15/01/2014 21:23

A week at Het Vennenbos link would cost 400 - 500 euros in May. This is an ex CP village with the tropical dome etc.

ashamedoverthinker · 15/01/2014 21:30

We did florida last year budgeted 6k spent about 8k. (upgrades.extras)

This year we are on a brutal budget. We have booked a number of small UK holidays to keep us going.

I have just used the £30 voucher of tesco clubcard to get £100 off cotages 4you. Lovely little booking in cornwall.

Our main holiday is 5 days in a caravan (cornwall again but beach location) it is a 'bucket and spade' holiday. But we will probably eat out which will be our main cost and the petrol.

Custardo · 15/01/2014 21:33

1 week turkey 200 quid

zizzo · 15/01/2014 21:33

Amazed at how much some flights are...am I the only person who flies Easyjet? ;)

Budget is around £2k. Last year we got lucky on our first package Thomsons holiday - £1500 all in for the three of us in Greece, including restaurants/trips/shop spend. 4 star family apartment. That was good as we wanted a week of staying on the same island, but usually we travel about more and so book flights and accommodation separately.
Usually however we book flights separately and in school holidays I don't pay more than 300 each for flights, using skyscanner to find the cheapest day, time and airline to fly.

per person

PortofinoRevisited · 15/01/2014 21:38

No - if we fly I pretty much always use Ryanair or Easyjet. Used Flybe I think to Toulons once. We are lucky that we just load the car and don't have to pay for a ferry crossing though.

magentastardust · 15/01/2014 21:48

We normally use Jet 2 or Easyjet. I have liked Jet 2 when children little as you can take buggy and car seats free of charge plus 22kgs luggage.

There are 5 of us though now that dd2 is over 2 so even being very careful and flying from non Scottish airports flight will normally be £800-£1200.

When ds1 was little we used to go to Disneyland Paris and fly into Beauvais with Ryanair-used to get 3 of us return flights for under £200!

We are the dreaded caravan daggers! Our main holiday is France. We live in the north of England so get overnight ferries to give DH a driving break. Ferry is about £800 return with cabin and food prepaid. Campsite is about £500 for 14 nights. Always book places with pool complexes and slides. About £300 for fuel and we budget at £100 day spends for a family of 4 so we can have days out, eat out or self cater!
But the caravan also means that we have a week in June half term on south coast, Cornwall or somewhere similar for about £400 all in fuel, site and spends, long weekends on the east coast playing in the sand for about £80 per weekend and quick weekends in around our region. We like it. It's a home away from home with loads of space for the dc's to play (3 & 6)

3 years ago we went to Asturias, northern Spain. Quiet beaches, lovely scenery and holiday lets there can be had for about £550 per week for a nice house. Friday out/Friday back flights were expensive on the way out so we went a day early and stayed in a nice hotel for one night, still cheaper than flying out on the Friday. I always check now to see if we can get more days holiday for less money.

GossamerHailfilter · 16/01/2014 07:48

I week in Rhodes - £3500 for 5 of us for hotel and flights, £45 airport parking, £1000 spending money.

Lifeisaboxofchocs · 16/01/2014 07:59

10 nights 5 star resort in Greece.

Accom £3.5k, and this was cheapest i found by £600. Half board. 2 adults, 2 pre schoolers.
Flights £550
Taxi £140
Taxi this side to airport £85

About £5k excluding spending.

JourneyToThePlacentaOfTheEarth · 16/01/2014 10:04

there are some fab holiday ideas on this thread. Its threads like this that help me get through the winter!

we have booked 11 nights in a mobile home on a campsite in SW France, mid August, £850 including eurotunnel. we'll have a stopover in an ibis budget on the way there and back - £150 for 2 rooms as there are 5 of us.

£1200 for spending money, tolls and petrol.

So thats £2200

secretscwirrels · 16/01/2014 15:21

Those of you doing "whitsun" holidays be aware that once your DC reaches Year 11 that is abig no no because of exam revision. The following year it's AS levels, the next y ear it's A levels. Then DC2.........
So make tha most of it.
In fact we didn't even manage a holiday at Easter last year as DS1 wanted to stay home and revise.

Creamycoolerwithcream · 16/01/2014 15:32

Are you me Secrets, but a year ahead??!! We normally do Easter but have swapped to Feb half this year and did a last whitsun holiday for a very long time last year.

Bunbaker · 16/01/2014 16:22

Good point secret. This will be the last year we can do a May holiday for a few years.

secretscwirrels · 16/01/2014 16:30

Creamycoolerwithcream I used to love a week at Easter and then another holiday at the end of August.
This year DS1 has A levels and DS2 has GCSEs. It does mean we can go early July before the school holidays start but I am not finding that prices are not much lower.
We can't go again at the end of August either because DS1 has to be around for universities admissions stuff.
I would have done Feb half term but DS2 is on a school trip.

Creamycoolerwithcream · 16/01/2014 16:44

Kids...roll on being able to go away in June or September.

wigglesrock · 16/01/2014 21:44

1 week in July in Ibiza. 5 of us all inclusive - slightly over £2,000. Flights, transfers, insurance, accommodation. We never spend that much when we are away.

Mikkii · 16/01/2014 22:30

We go to Southern Spain, staying in a family owned apartment. Flights generally around £800 to £1,200. Spending money usually €1,500 for 2 weeks. Car hire usually €700 but last year didn't bother, just borrowed MIL's car for a weekend. This is for 2 adults, 3 children.

This year we are also taking a 12 day cruise, fully AI , including drinks package, trips still to pay for, cost £6k but that includes MIL and flights to Italy and transfers to ship.

MegBusset · 16/01/2014 22:41

Last year we did a fortnight in France with Canvas, cost £1100 plus petrol/tolls and spending money so prob closer to £2k all told.

This summer we're staying in a lodge in the Lake District for a week, £650.

Never been long-haul with the DC, it doesn't really appeal even if we could afford it.

Dromedary · 16/01/2014 22:48

Are you at a private school?
I find a lot of these figures a bit mindblowing - £4K for a summer hol!
We can't afford long hols but do the odd 3 night stay in a youth hostel (generally using a special offer) throughout the year. That's long enough to feel like a real break. We go quite locally so not too bad on petrol. So including eating out money and petrol, must be around £200 to £250 per short holiday.

magentastardust · 16/01/2014 23:55

No Dromedary, just a local village school but live in the North East of Scotland so many families work in the oil industry.

South of Spain seems to be very reasonable for apartments and villas. We have stayed on a golf resort in the Murcia area before and it was really nice. Very spacious and contemporary villa for the money too.

I am astonished by how much so many people spend! We ferry to Calais at under £200, drive down as far as we can bear, another £100? and camp for 20 euros or under a night. Voila (!) 14 nights for four at well under £1000, all-in. Still shocked.
