How much will your summer holiday cost you roughly?

Majority of people in my dc's school will be heading for Florida this year on holiday-we wouldn't be able to stretch to that but are hoping to have some sort of European holiday in the school holiday time.

Just wondering If I am kidding myself about prices a bit -How much does everyone roughly spend on a fortnight in the sun. Maybe I should have budgeted more?

Off to croatia for a week-
Flights £900,
Apartment £1000
Transfer to the place prob about £80.
So £2k roughly for 5 of us, not too bad.

Bunbaker · 15/01/2014 16:54

We have booked a week in Crete. £3k for the 3 of us. I admit to pushing the boat out this year, but we have had our share of budget holidays and if we can't be as comfortable as we are at home we don't bother.

Just booked 2 sun holidays which are for 4 nights each. They have cost £80 each. Will prob spend about £200 - £300 on each one on meals and trips out.
Both these are booked outside of summer holidays, we just can't afford to go on holiday at this time. Hopefully might have the funds to go to a camping family festival too in the summer holidays.

ContinentalKat · 15/01/2014 17:05

Reading this and feeling slightly better about the insane amount of money we have just spent - over 5K for 2 adults and 2 kids, 2 weeks AI in Greece.

Methe · 15/01/2014 17:09

Where did you go Rudy ?

ShoeWhore · 15/01/2014 17:10

Last summer we did just under 2 weeks in France for under £2k inc spends. £1k on a week in a gite with pool, got a great deal on 4 nights Eurocamp caravan, did Chunnel and driving to get there, cheap stopover in a b&b hotel.

The Gite worked out cheaper doing the first week at Keycamp type places, although the dcs adored the water slides at the place we did the 4 nights at.

The year before I managed to do Barcelona for 10 nights in May/early June for £2.5k for the five of us inc spends - was v v lucky with flights though and dcs had to miss a couple

ShoeWhore · 15/01/2014 17:13

Dcs had to miss a couple of days of school that should say!

johnworf · 15/01/2014 17:20

South of France camping for just over 2 weeks. Campsite £500, eurotunnel £150. Diesel & tolls £300. Take some food of our own and rest of time eat whatever French eat. Should come in around £1300 for the 4 of us.

We paid more than this last year to go to Centreparcs for a week in August.

Week in Scotland about 1k for fuel and accommodation
Food will be more but we need that whatever we do

Possibly a few more short camping breaks will had up to a few more hundred

magentastardust · 15/01/2014 17:35

I agree -would never ask RL friends what they spend on their holidays! Its a safe way to be nosey Wink Wink

Its interesting to see what everyone does , and good for ideas too. I love a search in the travel topics of MN -its better than google, good to get people's opinions of different places.

Would love to go back to Puerto Pollensa too as we all enjoyed it there but for 2 weeks villa plus car and flights we would be pushing it in our budget.

Thinking of maybe Portugal this time-seems to be good value for self catering accommodation?

Interesting to see what people spend.
My DC will be 16 and 18 when we go so not only adult prices but they need their own room Mind you I have always tried to go for 2 bedroomed apartments rather than the sofa beds in the living room.
Last year paid about £5800 for 11 nights AI 5*.
Plus a c2 or 3 long weekends in the UK
This year will probably be a tiny bit less as both DC finish school at the end of June and we can go early July.

magentastardust · 15/01/2014 17:37

Just read Portofino's comment about getting extra holiday pay in Belgium - how great would that be !

1.2k for one week in Majorca summer hols

Plus probably 500 maybe spending money

CPtart · 15/01/2014 17:46

11 nights in four star hotel in Turkey in mid august? Four of us, all inclusive, just short of £3.5k

hannahem · 15/01/2014 17:48

We will be camping in the summer hols for a week (Norfolk, will cost £120 plus £100 petrol and another £100 in spending money as we will mostly cook and BBQ at the campsite). We have booked a cottage in north wales for the May half term so that is £350 plus another £100 in petrol and £100 in spending money (same reasons as above!). So all in all under £1k. Still sounds a lot when I add it up!

johnworf · 15/01/2014 18:06

We're also going camping May half term with other Mumsnetter families. Camping costs £25 plus a bit of spending money but not much as we all bring something with us to share.

Not a typical year for us due to a longhaul holiday to the States at Easter to visit family in Virginia. We do this once every few years due to the expense so this is definitely not a normal holiday year!

Easter - 2wks for 2 AD + 2 DC. Flights x 4 to Washington DC are the killer - £2.4K
Car hire - £500
Accommodation - £1.6K
So that's £4.5K excluding food & spending!!! We should get a few free meals from family whilst there at least!

Whitsun Half Term week would be our typical holiday.
Budget flights x 4 to Italy = £800
Car Hire = £250
S/C Accommodation budget

Dededum · 15/01/2014 19:37

1 week Eurocamp in Bordeaux - £1400 top notch mobile
Flights - air miles + £160
Car Hire - air miles

Also wedding in Scotland
And Holland at Easter

myron · 15/01/2014 20:04

We choose to take our main holiday during Whitsun week in a 'normal' year simply due to cost.

Generally, I try to aim for less than £2K - 2.5K for the week for shorthaul budget flights x 4, car hire and accommodation excluding food & spending. If I get particularly good prices on flights, I'll splurge more on the accommodation and vice versa.

We have stayed in fairly luxurious places within that budget including Sardinia & Tuscany which would not have been possible in August.

PortofinoRevisited · 15/01/2014 21:07

We pay a fecking lot of tax though Magenta Grin. Basically the Belgian salary system is based on a monthly wage x 13.85. So you actually get paid LESS through the year I guess, but get a month;s wages at Xmas, and 0.85 of a month's wages in April/May extra. It's like the govt saves up on your behalf for Xmas and the holidays.

magentastardust · 15/01/2014 21:13

We don't really have an equivalent to Whitsun holidays in Scotland. Other than Easter, summer and Oct holidays. We get 3 days off in Feb and a couple in November-if they gave us a week in May it would be much better! We do get 2 weeks in October though.

Have been to Florida several times and whilst there are only 3 of us, we've never spent more than £4k, including car hire, tickets etc. If you stay at Disney, you're looking at nearly double that but there's plenty of great accommodation outside of Disney.
