October holiday - looking for some winter sun - where to go?

hulababy · 22/05/2006 17:40

We are hoping to get away for up to a week in October half term. Not wanting to spend loads though as have other expenses this year.

Fancy some winter sun, so not in UK.

Will probably try and get a cheap flight from either Manchester or Doncaster.

Looking for self catering. Somewhere not too overtly touristy - don't want to be eating English food all week for example. Not bothered about cchildren's clubs, etc although family things to do would be great.

Any ideas?

We've done Majorca last two October half terms - uncrowded ,good weather (warm not hot though) not too far for a week, with cheap flights from most airports. You can still avoid the "British abroad" cliche, and get a variety of cuisine.

lexiemum · 22/05/2006 18:04

done paliokatrista (sp?) in corfu in october - weather was good, village lovely, v.few tourists and some fab restaurants and not a bit of bacon or fried egg in sight.

turkey could be good too - went in april and had a great time on an allinclusive for £250 pp!

hulababy · 22/05/2006 18:17

Just had a lookw here we can fly to from local airport, so can narrow down search a bit.

Right I can fly to the following places:

Alicante
Amsterdam - no, not warm enough
Bodrum - no not keen on Turkey
Bourgas
Cancun - too far for a week
Corfu - been to Greece before, fancy a change
Dalaman - no not keen on Turkey
Faro
Florida - no, going there in 3 weeks!
Gerona
Ibiza
Jersey - no, not warm enough
Malaga
Malta
Minorca
Ministar - where is this??
Naples - too far away for a week
Palma Mallorca
Paphos
Paris - done this area already; fancy a chnage
Pisa
Prague - probably too chilly
Puerta Plata - too far for a week really
Pula
Reus
Rhodes - no Greece as said
Tenerife South
Zakynthos - no Greece as said

So, where do you suggest and why?

Thanks for suggestions. Will get them all ready to look through with DH this week.

Is Naples really that much further than Pisa or Malta, can't be as far as Paphos. Could it be Monastir (Tunisia)?

tamum · 22/05/2006 18:23

Naples is hardly any further than Pisa in flying terms. You'd have to be careful in Naples itself, but you could get to the Amalfi coast, Sorrento and places like that from there quite easily.

moondog · 22/05/2006 18:25

What's the matter with Turkey lol?
I live there and you wont find nicer people, better food or a more interesting place anywhere!

zippitippitoes · 22/05/2006 18:28

Barcelona..likely to be nice weather unless unlucky, good food, good shopping if you have the cash..metro easy big choice of accommodation a beach good museums great architecture, lots of restaurants..parks etc

moondog · 22/05/2006 18:29

hulababy · 22/05/2006 18:31

someone took dd1 wallet from her bag on the madrid metro and when he went to get off at the next stop she poked him and said i think you've got my wallet under your newspaper..he gave it back! Shock

moondog · 22/05/2006 18:32

Righto
Fair enough

hulababy · 22/05/2006 18:32

zippitippitoes · 22/05/2006 18:33

thought reus was near? or is it near alicante

moondog · 22/05/2006 18:33

Hula,I've asked you a question on the 'Do you compromise for kids on holiday' thread if/when you have a moment. Smile

hulababy · 22/05/2006 18:39

Answered you moondog, but sadly no real explanation for phrase.

Tenerife and Malta sound the hottest at that time of year.

willow2 · 22/05/2006 20:13

Pisa not necessarily warm at that time - could be blooming cold. Weather changes around August 18th for that part of Italy. The hordes leave the beaches and the rain can start to chuck it down.

hulababy · 23/05/2006 11:21

Cheers. Doesn't need to be hot as such, just nice if we didn;t have to have coats and big jumpers on for a change.

CountessDracula · 23/05/2006 11:24

Ibiza is really nice off season and you can get really good cheap villas with pools for peanuts

zippitippitoes · 23/05/2006 11:24

reus is 90 mins train from Barcleona

Azure · 23/05/2006 11:33

We're flying to Malaga this October half-term and went there last October as well (staying in Marbella). Good weather, lots for the kids to do, and you can avoid the more touristy areas.

hulababy · 23/05/2006 11:56

More to consider, thanks. Going to sit dow with Dha nd go through any suggestions.

Do you literally just have the week off. If they tag an Inset day on, finish on a half day or have longer than a week off you may benefit price wise by not having fly at the weekend.
