Lapland next weekend...it's raining...

Hello

Looking for advice from anyone who had been to Lapland at this time of year. Have booked a daytrip to Lapland (on a whim at the beginning of the year) and we are due to go next Saturday, but looked on the webcam and it's pouring down.

I am seriously worried there will be no snow (kind of took it for granted there would be) and not sure what would happen with the organised activites if there is no snow?

Already panicking that I have wasted my money and that I have done the wrong thing in booking..

Can anyone advise me what the weather was like before they went out?
Thanks!

Where are you going exactl? Lapland doesn't exist. If you're going to Northern Sweden or Norway then its raining as far north as Tromso. The snow is better after Christmas and this autumn has been particularly mild. It's the luck of the draw, last year it snowed hard in early December,

jinglebellhop · 30/11/2011 19:32

It's Rovaniemi, Finland. Will keep my fingers crossed for snowing hard early this December! Thanks

we are going on the 14th and there is snow (according to dh) but we are going further north. I just presumed there would be snow aswell. We are hoping to go skiing.

sailorsgal · 03/12/2011 18:08

DH just looked at www.webcam.travel and there is snow though not loads.

QuintessentialyFestive · 03/12/2011 18:10

Well, it is a little known fact that it is mostly raining in the arctic before Christmas..... Grin sorry!

There is 2 cm snow in Tromsoe. At least there was, last week. Rovaniemi is much further south, but they dont get the warmth of the golfstream.

look at this
Looks like you will get snow!

Thanks for the replies-feeling more positive about it now!!

See this site for snow reports for skiing in Finnish resorts. Some are currently only open at weekends.

This site does list Lapland.

I just had some pics of Santa Claus Village posted on Facebook and there was 2 inches of snow on the cabins.

We are staying in the accommodation there over Christmas. There is a live webcam on there if you go on the SantaClausVillage website.

jinglebellhop · 06/12/2011 10:16

Thanks! The webcam/websites are great!

Binfull-Can you let me know how it goes staying over Christmas? Thinking of maybe staying longer next time if we enjoy the day trip!

I'm so excited!!!! Xmas Grin

Binfullofgibletsonthe26th · 06/12/2011 19:31

will do jinglebellhop, shall we mark this conversation and have a post Christmas recap?

I had to book my trip independantly as I live in Switzerland. So we are using their accommodation but we are seeing FC in Joulukka.

www.joulukka.com/

We are doing a fireside eveing with sausage and hot berry juice around the camp fire, and then a separate meeting on Christmas eve to work with the elves and meet FC. I'll let you know how it went!

I am literally beside myself with excitement. About 200% more than DS.

sailorsgal · 06/12/2011 20:19

I've put in threads I'm watching. A friend of mine is also going for xmas further north.

jinglebellhop · 06/12/2011 22:02

Still snow on the ground and more to come Grin Kids don't know and not sure I can keep it a secret for much longer!! They are a bit Hmm that I am wanting to take them out of school on Friday to go to the "cinema"..... (need to leave on Fri as won't be able to get to the airport on Saturday morn otherwise).

OP posts:
sailorsgal · 07/12/2011 08:53

Wow, can't believe you have been able to keep it a secret! We are going up Tuesday as our flight is silly o'clock on Wednesday.

FiveHoursSleep · 08/12/2011 19:04

I'm glad to find this thread as we are going to Saariselkä from the 20-23, and I was worried about there being no snow.
We haven't told the kids either, not sure when we will but are staying the night before at Gatwick, so will have to tell them something!
I'm looking forward to hearing about your trips.

jinglebellhop · 08/12/2011 19:57

Leaving tomorrow morning (as long as the boats sail...) so that we will definitely be at the airport early Saturday morning! Staying at a hotel near Glasgow airport after telling the kids we have missed the boat home after the cinema..Hmm

Then we are planning on "going to see some planes" at the airport and will tell the kids at the airport Grin we are going to Lapland for the day! I am super exited!

Don't worry about snow fivehours, I think it's looking pretty good now!

Hope you all have a lovely time and looking forward to hearing how much you enjoyed your trips!

sailorsgal · 08/12/2011 21:19

fivehourssleep You are going even further north than us as definitely should have lots of snow. We are going to Yllas. We were down to two resorts and yours was one of them. Where are you staying?

FiveHoursSleep · 08/12/2011 21:26

We are staying at Santa?s Hotel Holiday Club. The rooms are supposed to be 'cosy' but I'm hoping the pool will make up for it.

Figgygirl · 09/12/2011 01:49

According to this site, Yllas ski area last had snow on 5th December, and temp is 0 deg.

Lucy88 · 09/12/2011 22:16

Thank you so much to the people who put links up for the weather/snow. We are going to Pallas from 18th - 21st and it looks like we will have no probs with the snow. Can't wait - I think I am more excited than my 6 year old.

Figgygirl · 10/12/2011 02:32

Snow conditions are improving in most places and ski resorts. Yallas had more snow on the 8th.
