My suprise pressie from DH was a trip to see James Blunt (love him) at the Manchester Apollo in February.

Im looking for a hotel for 2 nights (thurs and fri) can anyone recommend somewhere nice as we very rarely get to go away whilst not breaking the bank?

The brittania hotel has rooms from £40.00 per night, this is on portland street. The lowry is lovely but does tend to break the bank a bit

peckarollover · 25/12/2005 20:24

Is the brittania nice?

I am prepared to pay up to £300 for both nights

Well, I like the look of Malmaison and I have to say that Malmaison in London was v good according to my sister who stayed there recently. They also upgraded her at my request (the night was my Christmas present to her), anyway I was impressed with their service and so was she. Or there's the Lowry which is probably more expensive. Don't forget to look at Laterooms - the discounts can be considerable - Malmaison via their website was £175, on Laterooms it was £99 - just looked and The Lowry is £120 on Laterooms and much more than that on their site. I stayed at Eleven Didsbury Park last year and that was v nice and a bit cheaper but isn't central.Their other hotel, Didsbury House looks nice too. Ooh, how exciting!

WickedWinterWitch · 25/12/2005 20:36

Ooh x posted re Didsbury hotels! There you go Pecka, 2 of us recommending them!

WickedWinterWitch · 25/12/2005 20:38

Oh there you go then, if your budget is £300 for both nights you can probably do Malmaison. I stayed at Jury's in Manchester recently (no choice, preferred supplier pah!) and it was ok but don't go there, it's a business hotel and the service was crap, the food was crap, it's not as nice as all these others.

peckarollover · 25/12/2005 20:38

Has anyone been to this one?

If you want to make sure it's nice, check out tripdavisor.com which gives great reviews and info on all the hotels (with links to cheap prices too).

peckarollover · 25/12/2005 20:39

I would really like walking distance to the centre and the apollo. Or a very very short cab ride.

I really fancy having a lovely weekend going between hotel and shops hotel and appollo hotel and restaurants ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh cant wait

Oh Pecka, just looked on Mr & Mrs Smith and also found Great John St which is run by the same people who have 11 Didsbury Park, but is in central Manchester.

WickedWinterWitch · 25/12/2005 20:46

Gt John St massively discounted on Laterooms too, £135 for a luxury suite discounted from £275, bargain!

peckarollover · 25/12/2005 20:53

Yhanks WWW - that one when I put specific dates in is 500 quid on laterooms!

OP posts:
WickedWinterWitch · 25/12/2005 20:58

That's because it's not late yet I guess. It depends on whether you want to book it now or whether you can hold your nerve and wait. There is a risk of not getting somewhere if you do that though. If there's no go on Laterooms you can always haggle with hotels on the phone, they often go down on rate if you ask. In Manchester Malmaison told me it depends on whether Man U/City are playing. When they're not you can get a Malmaison room for £99.

peckarollover · 25/12/2005 21:00

I wonder if this concert will have any impact? He is playing over the 3 days we want to go. Ive noticed while looking a few are full on those dates already.

oh and DOH and not realising they were higher because its not late yet LOL

DD2 and myself recently stayed in the Victoria and Albert Hotel (opposite the Granada TV Studios in Water Street). The hotel has just undergone major refurbishment. Thought it was VERY nice and food was excellent - we weren't paying Granada were, so I couldn't tell you the cost.

peckarollover · 27/12/2005 20:21

lucyep, thanks I will look that one up

LucycatsGotTheTurkey · 27/12/2005 20:28

The Apollo is in Ardwick so a little way out of the centre, you are best going for a city centre hotel and getting a taxi out to the concert.

peckarollover · 27/12/2005 20:29

are any of the hotels listed further down city centre then?

OP posts:
LucycatsGotTheTurkey · 27/12/2005 20:44

The Malmaison and the Rossetti hotels are both quite near Piccadilly train station so also good for taxis, they are central.

The Radisson is also nice on Peter St just up from The Midland hotel, they are close to the bars of Deansgate and are both gorgeous buildings. The Radisson is opposite Brannigans of Most Haunted fame!!

santagotstuckOOPSthechimney · 27/12/2005 20:54

the chain that the rossetti is in have 2 hotels that i have been to.
They are brilliant, the best hotels i have ever been in.
can't say enough good things about them

mancmum · 27/12/2005 21:11

rosetti is fab and has a club in the basement at weekends that is great -- my SIL is a travel journo and she has reviewed most of hotels listed here.. she reckoned St John was best by miles.. no restaurant but that means you can eat at some of the fab restaurants around.. can recommend some if you need..

peckarollover · 27/12/2005 21:17

ooooooooooo think rossetti may be the winners - like the idea of a club downstairs too

There is an Ibis in city centre (have stayed in other ones and they are fine), see www.ibishotel.com, or slightly more upmarket www.novotel.com
