Botony bay on the kent coast......shhhhhhh!

aliceliddell · 12/09/2011 21:59

Joss Bay near Margate

mulranno · 13/09/2011 13:52

I'd 2nd Joss Bay, or Botany Bay. Broadstairs is lovely - but not secret - more seafood stalls and donkey rides. St Margarets is not much to write home about really and is pebbly. The Warren near Folkestone is sandy and it is easy to find a quiet spot.

aliceliddell · 14/09/2011 20:01

Porto - do you go to Morelli's for an ice cream?

talkingnonsense · 14/09/2011 20:04

The little bay next to joss bay is fab
Tankerton is not secret but dog friendly
Romney marsh has lots of muddy sand and anpub that dies costa coffee

Portofino · 14/09/2011 20:05

Used to. I even worked at Morelli's once - though in Dover rather than Broadstairs.....

ChristinedePizan · 14/09/2011 20:06

Botany is my fave but shhhhhh ...

Joss bay. I like eastbourne too.

Portofino · 14/09/2011 21:38

Broadstairs to me is like the seaside was like in the 50s. Beach huts, mini-golf, ice cream, donkeys, whelks. Lovely.

ChristinedePizan · 15/09/2011 09:41

I prefer Botany to Joss because it's less crowded, less commercialised (there's no bouncy castle which are the bane of my life!) and there are some lovely rock formations and caves to explore. When the tide's out you can walk round to the bay between Botany and Joss (which I think is actually considered an extension of Botany) and there is an enormous beach which only ever has about three people on it :)

:o at you working at Morelli's porto

GloriaVanderbilt · 15/09/2011 09:44

Oh stop! It's thanks to threads like this that these beaches aren't secret at all any more. EVERYONE I've met knows about Botany, Londoners, newcomers, everyone.

Maybe the Guardian published something about it. Anyway it's not a secret any more.

I think further suggestions ought to be done by PM Smile

GloriaVanderbilt · 15/09/2011 09:45

Oh and yes st Margs is BIG grey stones. Horrible.

ChristinedePizan · 15/09/2011 09:57

Sorry! There have been so many bloody articles about the beaches here though - my parents regularly cut them out and send them to me - that the secret is most definitely out. The fact that you can't park unless you get there at 10am gets rid of the day-trippers though Wink

GloriaVanderbilt · 15/09/2011 10:00

Oh it';s Ok. I know. It's too late. It's cos we're in driving distance from the big smoke.

DFL resentment

Portofino · 15/09/2011 10:33

Christine - oh yes - I have fond memories of my red and white striped tabard! I used to like manning the ice-cream machine outside. It was a great way of meeting boys! Aah for the old days when I was young and thin and got chatted up regularly by attractive young men ...Grin and got free ice cream....

ChristinedePizan · 15/09/2011 11:07

I'd be the size of a house if I worked at Morellis Blush. If you eat two scoops in a cone though, you can quite easily do without dinner. I wonder if there's a market for a Morelli's meal replacement diet? :o

aliceliddell · 15/09/2011 17:52

Porto i used to work in the one in Eastbourne, I think called Fusciardi's. We never had tabards Envy

Portofino · 15/09/2011 19:11

Oh yes, tabard and a jaunty paper hat! Mr Morelli, son of the original Signor Morelli I believe, had a very expensive wife and the most adorable dd. By my calculation she must be about 30 now. I wonder if she is a MNetter?

Christine, I take it you live round that way then? I was born in Dover and lived in Deal for many years before moving abroad. I MISS the sea!

aliceliddell · 15/09/2011 19:38

Porto - a hat? A jaunty hat? Good God, I'd have paid them to work there if there was a hat! And a tabard, you say? Envy Angry

Portofino · 15/09/2011 19:41

No wonder they were fighting over me! Grin

Portofino · 15/09/2011 19:44

It didn't seem so romantic when it was my turn to clean the burger grill machine thing at 11pm though.....

aliceliddell · 15/09/2011 19:44

Not surprised, Porto. Bet you looked a bit spesh in that hat

aliceliddell · 15/09/2011 19:46

Btw, did you wear anything under the tabard? Or was it like a kilt?
