does she mix with the locals though

soapbox · 13/10/2005 15:03

Not as much as she would like to I think. But she does have some friends out there. It is quite a remote part of Turkey IIRC.

Moondog - are there still arson attacks on second homes in Wales?

puff · 13/10/2005 15:07

.......or have you given up on certain nocturnal activities ?

Wordsmith · 13/10/2005 15:12

I'd like St Ives, Cornwall and The Canadian Rockies please.

And I would make sure I contribute to the local economy, probably by letting out my lavish homes to very wealthy people on the strict instructions only to patronise local traders, in both senses of the word.

Moondog, do you believe holiday cottages in general should be under the control of some sort of Government quango and only let out to people who will be worthy of them? Otherwise I can't see why you are so vehemently opposed. Not every MNetter in their virtual second home will leave it empty 11 months of the year and not pay their local taxes!

MaryP0p1 · 13/10/2005 15:15

I liked my holiday home in Italy soooooo much we moved there permenently...

hhhhenleyonthames · 13/10/2005 15:22

There is apparently a village in the dordogne with 120 houses - 80 of which owned by Brits, 65 of which are holiday homes. I can see why the locals get pissed off.

I have no compunction, however, about a pied de terre in SW1 (or SW3)

zippitippitoads · 13/10/2005 15:25

I suspect some people would happily swap their neighbours for an empty holiday home next door...

Santorini
Croatia

CountessDracula · 13/10/2005 15:27

oh so it's ok for bumpkins to invade London then is it?

Marina · 13/10/2005 15:28

I'd follow Frank Muir and go to the Balagna (wooded hills outside Calvi on Corsica). But, actually, I'd prefer to live there as I'd never want to come back to England. I'm not a second-homer by temperament/wallet size either - would always be fretting about pipes/termites/fire-starters...
Soapbox, if you do plump for Ventor, I hope you will consider renting to careful, local tenants for the odd fortnight

soapbox · 13/10/2005 15:30

I'm keeping a close eye on it - if it comes down below £300k then I think we will put another offer in.

It needs a lot of work though - at the moment its two flats effectively which I don't think they had planning or building regs permission for.

Would like to reinstate it back to one lovely big house again. The beach is literally 10 yards from teh front door!!

If we ever get that far then of course you can be first in the queue!

Abso-bloody-lutely CD

teeavee · 13/10/2005 15:37

If I had the cash, I would absolutely love to have a home in wales and a home in Brittany - 6 months in one and 6 months in the other is my idea of heaven.

I might start buying lottery tickets.

Marina · 13/10/2005 15:37

I LOVE the Island. Ventnor's stock is surely due to rise. Let's keep praying for a nice flat market there this winter eh!

FangAche · 13/10/2005 15:39

Isle of Arran.

Eve · 13/10/2005 15:40

We are building a palce in Southern Italy at moment, but it is village Dh is from. So lots of connections and in the village they are welcoming lots of 2nd home owners as it is bring work to the village.

CountessDracula · 13/10/2005 15:41

teavee watch out moondog will get you if you buy in wales

Enid · 13/10/2005 15:43

lol cd thats what my best mate says (bumpkins coming to London). she was sooooo happy that the congestion charge might put some of them off

teeavee · 13/10/2005 15:44

Second homes for Brits are a bit of an 'issue' here in Brittany too - esp.since they seem only to employ english plumbers, builders, tilers etc for the renovation work. they have a brit expat website on which they advertise their services 'au noir', and many come to live here permanently on reitrement, but are decidedly reluctant to learn French or integrate into the community (it's always easy perhaps, at that stage of your life).
I know a lot of bretons who are pissed off about being effectively priced out of the local housing market and not gaining anything economically - but hey, I'm used to it, coming from N Wales

puff · 13/10/2005 15:46

Agree with you Marina - I'd just want to move permanently tbh.

moondog · 13/10/2005 16:19

This details why I am so vehemently opposed to second home ownership in my community.

Yes.Ilive in Turkey part of the year as my dh works there. We rent a flat from local people. As one of about 15 foreigners in a city of over a million people it is hard to get on down with the locals but I do my best, which includes a daily Turkish lesson.
I have just had a friend from Turkey staying with me for a month. She learnt and spoke more Welsh in a month than most second home owners do in years.
Mind you, she's Kurdish and they of course have been s*t upon form a great height by the Turkish authorities for years.

Teeavee is allowed homes in Brittany and Wales as
a) She's Welsh
b) Her dh is Breton
c) I'm friends with her sister and she's lovely

expatinscotland · 13/10/2005 16:20

The Bordeaux region. No doubt!

teeavee · 13/10/2005 16:23

can't afford a home in Wales though, moon, the many pensioners from the Wirral have priced me out

{where did i put those matches?????}

moondog · 13/10/2005 16:26

You can borrow mine teeavee.....
