Dha nd I would like to have a nice night away from home, without DD.

It'll be first time we will have left her; she's 3yo. No particualr reason, in case anyone asks why - never had need nor inclination before!
As it is first time though I'd rather not be too far away. We currently live in centre of Sheffield and would prefer to be no further than an hour's drive away. Even though we'll be drinking at least a taxi could still get us back in that time if necessary. I am perfectly sure she'll be fine though, honest.

Looking for somewhere nice for a meal and bottle of wine, plus for a nice stay away. Ideally one that isn't going to break the bank though, as we are moving in a month's time.

Any ideas?

I have stayed here and liked it but no idea about the distance of drive.

Hulababy · 01/09/2005 20:17

Thanks pootlepd - I'll have a look. Belper isn't too far. I used to work not far from there in Duffield.

Without a shadow of a doubt, this is the finest hotel I've stayed in around Sheffield. Really lovely - wonderful food, refined atmosphere and incredibly romantic

Fischers

there's a nice hotel in Pott Shrigley, near Macclesfield

Clayhead · 01/09/2005 22:02

Crewe Hall

Hulababy · 01/09/2005 22:03

That's probably a bit too far for just a meal and one night break. Thanks anyway.

We're going here for a night at the end of Sept (although sadly bringing the ds's!). It's lovely gastropubish food, great beer (and good wine cellar) in olde worlde type setting, though I confess we haven't actually seen the rooms yet!

Hulababy · 01/09/2005 22:03

Think really it needs to be Derbyshire or Yorkshire (South or West)

jamiesam · 01/09/2005 22:04

Or Monsal Head err, thingy??? (pub/hotel, not too far away at all)

Hulababy · 01/09/2005 22:05

jamiesam - sounds nice. Can't look further at that one till tomorrow - no website.

Monsal Head looks nice, and they do half board deals too.

You'll have a great time! First night away from dd, what are you like! You know she won't even know you're gone

Hulababy · 01/09/2005 22:13

Oh I know. She won't care at all - she'll behaving a fab time being spoilt by grandparents!

TBH though - we've just never had to stay away from her at night, as when we go out it is much easier for my parents or PILs to come to ours, even for really late ones. Then my parents will just normally stay over.

Much closer to home, there's a restaurant in Dronfield called the Manor that has a few bedrooms - they call it a restaurant with rooms. Gorgeous food and fab service. Kind of old-fashioned posh restaurant - but not old fashioned in a bad way, in a lovely being spoilt way. You could spend the day somewhere like Hathersage or Chatsworth and head back to Dronfield in the evening?

Thanks edam - I'll look that one up.

Could also do north Nottinghamshire too.

fischers has a very good reputation but would also recommend Hassop Hall in Hassop (near Great Longstone - towards Bakewell) but might be expensive

edam · 01/09/2005 22:25

It's just changed hands, but my mother was there last week and didn't say it had gone downhill or anything. Nice old building - think they used to have a website as I have a vague memory of seeing the interior of the rooms on it (daydreaming about would mother ever forgive me if I booked us in there instead of staying at her house...). Monsal Head is also supposed to be lovely.

Do you know if the Beauchief (sp? can't remember) is still v. good, btw? Trying to think of somewhere to take mother for her birthday and think Manor is too obvious.

soapbox · 01/09/2005 22:28

Fischers has changed hands then??

I stayed there lots and lots a few years ago when I had clients in Chesterfield and I loved it.

Have always promised to take DH there for a weekend but not managed it yet. I'd be very disappointed if it goes down hill before we get there!
