If you had a Time Machine and could spend a day at any point in the past where would you go? I would love to go back to Victorian London and walk around for the day

I would just be happy to go back to the 90s and do it all again.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 04/12/2024 22:27

Early 60s to see The Beatles in the Cavern

Littlemissgobby · 04/12/2024 22:35

God, this is really hard because I’ve watched so many time travelling films and you’ve got to remember the butterfly effect like I would love to have stopped say Hitler but then what would happen now?
I would like to see if Jesus existed and if he did, I would like to see how he operated and how the people took to him if it was anything like what it’s in the Bible.
Love to see the old Greeks to see the Greek mythology how it took place in their Society the orgies of the Romans I would love to see the orgies lol. Them Spartacus men lol
Then I guess I would like to see a bit of our own history maybe see how it stunk in the Viking times
but actually, I would like to buy stocks of companies that have done well now.
If the butterfly effect wasn’t a thing then possibly I would like to kill the people that would’ve caused much disaster to the world, including Hitler

I've often wondered if I could take medicine back to the 1500's how different the world would be.

Can you imagine the difference antibiotics would have made to the course of history?

8moredays · 04/12/2024 22:51

I would love to go back about 100 years when my grandparents and great grandparents were young and see what their life was like. I know from my family research where they lived and what jobs they did, but I'd love to go back in time and visit them

Ben Elton wrote a really interesting novel about this, what would have happened if WWI could have been prevented. Called Time and Time again. Lots of unintended consequences...!

HiGunny · 04/12/2024 22:58

1920s to be a flapper.
I'd also love to go back to medieval times to experience how much more empty the country was and to experience the lack of traffic/train etc noise. I find it hard to visualize such a small population compared to nowadays.

London in about 1600. Just wander around, visit the pubs, etc, and earwig Shakespeare and Ben Johnson and Marlowe and Drake and the other Elizabethans.

Ooh yes, I'd want to see a Shakespeare play with actual Shakespeare in it.

Another fantastic novel on a similar theme is 11.22.63, Stephen King, it's time travel around the JFK assassination.

Id like to go back to the late 70s to see lots of great bands and artists live. I'd love to have seen the concerts when Rick James and Prince were on the same billing! I'd also go to The Blitz Club in London and hang out with all the soon to be New Romantics.😁

JohnofWessex · 04/12/2024 23:25

Early/mid 50's

Ride the Somerset and Dorset and The Bristolian.

Sail on the Queens - Bristol and Cardiff to Lundy and the King Orry class to the Isle of Man.

Cosens from Weymouth and Bournemouth to Lulworth Cove.

Ride the Brighton Belle

etc etc

Failing that the round the world flight of the Graf Zeppelin in 1929 and trips to Ilfracombe on Britannia & Devonia

TotallyTwisted · 04/12/2024 23:28

I'd love to just spend the day walking around my city (Edinburgh) a hundred or so years ago, to see what looks familiar and what has completely changed. I'm sure the time travel rules strongly forbid this, but it would be great if I could wear comfy trainers and have my phone with me to take photos!

WinterFoxes · 04/12/2024 23:29

Shakespearean London. I'd do a Gwyneth and pretend to be a man so I could perform in one of Shakespeare's plays and discuss plot ideas with him at the tavern.

Illjusthavethebreadsticks · 04/12/2024 23:30

The roaring 20's

calmandcollected101 · 04/12/2024 23:31

Go back and find where my ancestors are from in India.

The British took the Indians, Mauritians and Africans to Trinidad however we have no idea where our roots are from.

Moonlightstars · 04/12/2024 23:38

Ohhh I would go around time and stop all the despots/wanker parents from shagging so they didn't produce Hitler, Stalin, Ghengis Khan, Mugabe, Netenuah

And all the cunts like Trump, Andrew Tate, Musk, Johnson,

Or the people that invented nuclear weapons, guns, the internet, slavery, and so much more

And the man that murdered my grandmother and all rapists and all murderers ...

It might take sometime

Alternatively I might just pop into the 1960s and 70s have lots of fun at festivals and see loads of amazing bands play.

Cantthinkofonenow · 04/12/2024 23:38

I also wish I could spend an afternoon with this family, it was filmed in 1958 and centred around a woman who had four grown up daughters.

Crete before the Santorini eruption.

I have theories about Linear A

Ness of Brodger around 3000bce. Ooh, or further back to see the French or Spanish cave painters in action

Ooh, this one is good too. Now I'm torn!

1967 San Francisco Summer of Love. Dropping acid and dancing around with all the flower children. Driving around in a hippie van like the Mystery Machine 👻

MugPlate · 04/12/2024 23:55

Needs to be an era with loo paper imo.

Keepingongoing · 12/12/2024 09:03

Just found this thread. I’d love to go back to when my grandparents were children. Because what always fascinates me is that in every period there are traces of earlier periods, through the older people’s beliefs and habits, as they are still around and helping to bring up the children.

So on one side: 1890s and 1900s London East End - Edwardians, loads of new innovations, but still a few people around from the beginning of the Victorian era.

On the other side: 1900s USA, my grandparents were born in the ‘new world’, embracing America and modernity, but their parents had grown up in the Tsarist Russian empire.

BunnyLake · 12/12/2024 09:18

Biblical times when Jesus was around so I can see what really happened.

IWanderedLonely · 01/03/2025 20:10

The Iron Age, pre -Roman invasion, would love to learn what the druids really did.
Also visit Boudicca and explain the Romans' pincer action tactic before her last battle.
