Basically, any recommendations, for a 1st year?
And if DC had to go down the private route did it turn out ok.
Thanks.

Newcastle accommodation is a complete lottery. DD was lucky enough to be allocated Park View, which is right next to the medical school.

Octavia64 · 17/08/2026 09:06

My dd graduated last year.

the one she hated they have now knocked down!
one of her friends had a room in a private hall and it was lovely!

she shared with friends in the second and third year in a flat in jesmond (student area) and loved it.

Goldie73 · 17/08/2026 10:56

I'm interested in this too. We've booked a room privately in Newgate, but will try tomorrow via the uni portal. DC is keen to be with other Uni of Newcastle students, and is worried he won't get that at Newgate. Everything I've read suggests it's unlikely anything good will be available tomorrow. Would love to hear views on Newgate and experiences of the uni accom application process for insurance/clearing students.

My ds lived in Windsor Terrace in Year 1. He loved it

PerdreLeBleu · 17/08/2026 11:17

My son who has just graduated was at Maris House and loved it. He moved into private rented for the next two years. Maris House was his first choice and that’s what he got. It’s on the same site as Park View.

Castle Leazes was grim. One of DD's friends was there but she managed to get a room in Park View after someone dropped out.

Octavia64 · 17/08/2026 11:51

Yes, it was castle Leazes she hated.

she actually thought about going and celebrating when they knocked it down!

We’re in the same boat as you, hopeful there will be something on the portal. Newgate is one of the Managed Partnership halls so your DC would be with other Newcastle Uni first year students if you book that. None of the Managed Partnership halls look too bad - I think the bigger risk is that it will be the higher cost (premium en-suite) and furthest out ones left. I assumed the Uni would reserve all of the spaces in the Managed partnership halls but clearly not. Did you go to the open day on Saturday?

We didn't go on Saturday, but we came for an open day ages ago. Didn't visit any halls, but have a sense of where Newgate is - seems pretty central. I reckon it'll be a real scrap to get anything through the portal tomorrow. I was told by the Accommodation Helpline that we'd get an email in advance linking us through to the portal. But all we've had is the standard 'welcome' email. Same for you?

DD ended up in private halls as managed to miss the email deadline to apply for uni halls….🥴

She was in Strawberry Place. It was excellent, far, far more luxurious than the halls, but also more expensive. Excellent location.

Like a basic hotel room - warm, smart, clean, reasonably spacious and private bathroom. Gym downstairs, lots of social events arranged (she didn’t go to many), free breakfast to go in the lobby every day, good laundry room.

Only fly in the ointment was her hall mates (she had a room on a private corridor - 5 rooms sharing one kitchen, 3 boys, 2 girls). Three of them were absolute animals; did not clean up after themselves EVER, never took the bins out leading to maggots/flies, blocked the kitchen sink on a weekly basis. The hall managers were pretty useless to be honest; the weekly cleaner knew who it was but nothing ever seemed to be done to sort them out. They were all sent warning letters but nothing ever changed. It was honestly like nothing I’ve ever seen, how they have been brought up to live like that I will never know.

So that’s the gamble but I suppose it is in whatever accommodation you end up in.

TISSHA · 17/08/2026 17:19

Loads of Newcastle uni students in the halls as a whole. On her corridor, she and one other were Newcastle and the others Northumberland.

wordledrivingmemad · 17/08/2026 17:21

Mine was in Unites manor bank in their 1st year. Seemed ok

EmptyInTheValley · 17/08/2026 18:42

My daughter was in Newgate Court for her first year (graduated last year). She absolutely loved it and had a fabulous time there. She was in a flat of 10 people, all at Newcastle Uni.
It is in a great location. Really central and just up the hill from the train station. And a 10-15 minute walk to uni.
I loved visiting her there too. It was easy (apart from when there was a home game on) to park at The Gate - two level car park, right by St James' Park football stadium. About a 10 minute walk downhill from there to Newgate Court.
It has great reception and security and it was always easy to send post there! I really appreciated that as it was a bugger to reliably get anything to my son, who was at a different university.
We both have very happy memories of her time there.

We have reserved Marris House through the portal. Hope your DC got what they want, but if not I think Newgate is a good choice.

How did you all get on? DS is in Verde, right beside the business school. Looks really nice.

Known as Castle Sleazes even in the 1990s!

Thanks. We've stuck with Newgate. Now to start shopping...

Yes we liked Verde too. Great choice!

@stubiff @Goldie73@gingercat02 Do we want to start a Newcastle Starters 26 thread? I’m nagging DS to check his emails as it will be one thing after another now, some of which will need a quick response eg move in slots. We can tip each other off!

Happy to join. We actually live here (Whitley Bay) but he's living out.

Yes, sounds good if you want to start.

Didn't get any Uni accom this morning, but has got a private provider near the Business School.

All this is so stressful!

Friends DS has got Windsor Terrace as a Clearing student via the portal today. Said it looks v central and good price. Is Uni owned too.

WombatChocolate · 18/08/2026 13:41

Stubiff - has the uni accom run out now?

PinkNeonSign · 18/08/2026 13:44

My brother lived in Windsor Terrace and I lived in what I think is now called Park View (used to be Ricky Road) both were great. Newcastle is a great city in which to be a student, your DC will all have a great time 😀
