How much are people giving their children for graduation?

DS1 is graduating this week. I’m very proud of him, he’s worked hard and done well. It seems to be the done thing to give graduating kids some money, which I’m happy to do. But I’m wondering what the going rate is. Most of my friends in the same position are much richer than me, so I don’t want to ask them, because the money they can afford is crazy! Can people on here tell me how much, if anything, they’re giving their graduating kids?

We just went for a nice meal and drinks. Why would you give them anything just for completing their degree which presumably they chose to do?!

We didn't buy DD a present -didn't even cross my mind. We had supported her financially during and we had a lovely dinner afterwards.

This! I can't believe some parents give money at graduation 😯

Wow. Is this like a Push Present? Grin

Seriously, this is absurd. I mean, give them a nice watch or even a car if you feel you can afford that and it's warranted, and you want to celebrate the end of an era, but I literally know NOBODY who has done this. I thought the norm was to take your young person out for a good meal somewhere after graduation (if they wanted, since it's sort of their day) and maybe take them with you on holiday if they want that.

But then I don't really get 'proms' for primary school, North Pole Breakfasts or those twee little envelopes with inspirational quotations and a fiver inside that WIWIKAU suggest we send off with our university students for the first time, so I'm just a grumpy old fart.

I just wish we could all grow the fuck up, as a society, and stop this constant flow of commemoration gifts, sweeteners and bribes for expected behaviour or entirely normal points of someone's life. It's nice to - but please don't create some sort of expectation that we should all be spending £££s on something just for the sake of it.
