@SilverBlue56 @CautiousLurker2

Thank you for the querying! It prompted me to ask DS2 what was actually occurring 😁

It turns out that it's only in DS2's opinion that he can't firm Bath and insure Southampton because a) he's been told that the insurance uni should be two grades lower and b) because he's taking 4 A levels, Bath's offers (Astar A A B/Astar Astar BB) are more flexible than Southampton's offer (standard Astar Astar A, with no mention of the 4th A level.)

Ah - so I know my two were both told that ‘as a rule of thumb’ best to take the highest and lowest offers as firmed and insured, and where grades are close across the board, look for at least 2 grades differential. My DS had all 2xAstarA or AstarAA offers (we took the view that we would look at clearing if it all went belly up as Lancaster and Surrey etc also had places in clearing, (including via the foundation year if things went seriously bad).

However, I would advise that he checks with Southampton what the implications are because they are really very flexible - I know of much desired candidates getting in with ABB after offers of 2Astars/A because their references/statements and past grades were so strong.

Am just pasting this from Southampton’s email entitled ‘Flexibility on Entry Requirements’:

If you don’t yet know your exam results, we want to reassure you that for some subjects, we may be able to show some flexibility in the grades we accept, even if you don’t meet the academic grade conditions of your offer.

There's nothing you need to do. If flexibility is possible, it will be applied automatically when we review your results.

When we made your offer, we considered a range of factors to make sure we were confident in your potential to thrive at Southampton. These included contextual information, your predicted grades, the subjects you’re studying, and the grades we’ve accepted in previous years.

You can see the highest and lowest grades that our previously enrolled students achieved, on your course page on the UCAS website.

Not sure if this is helpful?

Shodan · 13/04/2026 22:11

@CautiousLurker2 That's actually incredibly helpful, thank you. I do know a bit about Southampton- ds1 went there after missing his grades for Bristol for Politics, was accepted for Archaeology at Southampton, and basically blagged his way onto the Politics course when he got there! But ds2 is a different kettle of fish.

Shodan · 13/04/2026 22:15

@CautiousLurker2 I've relayed your message to ds2 and he seems pleased and quite hopeful, so thank you so much! Exeter really wasn't in the mix for him tbh.

Yes - I am sorry I mentioned it. The student room example was 8 years ago. Lots of people come a bit later to accommodation and are fine. Remarks are not uncommon. There are so many scenarios. Honestly I think firm and insurance universities have become more flexible now with fewer international applicants.

Thanks @ArchitectureMum and @hockeyfun - yes the posting regarding Durham was indeed 8 years ago but if they typically have a six day period after results day of considering 'near misses' then that was my concern because of the accommodation deadlines. Warwick ran out of accommodation last year (reports of 1000 students who were allocated off-campus accommodation in private halls) so its important to be confirmed by the accommodation deadline to be in with a chance of on-campus accommodation. Yes, my DS hasn't sat his exams yet so he could end up missing the grades spectacularly and not having either Durham or Warwick as an option but we are just trying to work out now if putting these two together as firm and insurance is going to throw up a complication after results day if he is a 'near miss' for his firm choice!

The lure of overseas student fees is, if anything, becoming more important to universities now to try and maintain their finances so they may still want to 'shop around' after results day to see who they can get to fill their places, including the lucrative overseas students.

It is interesting to see some universities are more flexible though, like Southampton. My DS has an offer from them too which he is weighing up and I know their accommodation deadline is even later (around end August). Hence, why we're looking at these risks regarding accommodation now.

hanahsaunt · 15/04/2026 16:50

Still waiting LSE... It's by far his first choice and I just hope it comes good. He likes Bristol but has ruled out Exeter after the offer holder day so this feels very down to the wire. He's being very stoical but my heart does ache for him.

AuntyBulgaria · 15/04/2026 17:13

An expected UCL rejection today. So Warwick(MORSE)/Loughborough (Maths/Economics) combo on the cards. Good to have a decision made -just got to get him to do it formally.

CautiousLurker2 · 15/04/2026 19:54

Sorry for the disappointment @AuntyBulgaria - awful to have to process this so close to exams, but having a place at Warwick is a real feather in his cap.

Can’t believe the exams start in less than 4 weeks.

AuntyBulgaria · 15/04/2026 20:26

@CautiousLurker2 thank you though to be honest DS had already decided against UCL as we live about 40 mins bus ride from the campus and definitely now does not want to not live at home.

But Warwick's offer is an aspirational one and will be a tough ask. Good job he is really keen on Loughborough!

InbetweenDaze · 15/04/2026 20:44

Posting on here for the first time! My DS just got a rejection from Bristol for law - gutted as he was also rejected from Oxbridge and doesn’t really want to go to his other offers (Exeter, Lancaster and still waiting to hear from one other). So it feels like a dead end and he’s now thinking of taking a gap year and reapplying. Which has never been the plan! He got 24 in the LNAT. GCSEs all 7s and 8s contextual. Does anyone think the LNAT score just wasn’t high enough for Bristol? Thanks

EducatingRosemary · 15/04/2026 21:38

Firm and insurance submitted today! Any thoughts, tips or intel for on campus hall choices at Loughborough or York now most welcome please.

@AuntyBulgaria Warwick and Loughborough are both great Universities.y DC is still trying to decide where to go, got an offer holder day to attend next week and hopefully we’ll get a decision after that.

Gazelda · 15/04/2026 22:52

I agree @CautiousLurker2its tough having decisions arrive so close to exams. DD is still waiting for KCL, which would be her first choice. Until she gets a decision, she can’t make her mind up and says she feels in limbo. Plus she likely won’t be able to attend OHD (if she gets an offer, of course!).

lanadelgrey · 15/04/2026 23:46

It feels so unfair/mean of the late offerers to make people wait with just weeks to go until exams start. Still waiting on LSE here and if DS hadn’t got one of his preferred and aspirational choices he would feel so disheartened about working hard as the possible insurance ones are v much second best on his eyes. He wants them all in before he presses send on choices

mumonthehill · 16/04/2026 05:44

I am sorry some still waiting, it does feel really unfair and an added stress.

Wehaditsogood · 16/04/2026 11:33

Still waiting for Warwick. Sigh.

On the plus side DS decided what to do if his A-levels are not good as hoped. I think he regretted some of his choices and thinks he can get to some unis in clearing.
He has been studying nonstop for weeks now. He is just thinking about finances and how to spend less. Real adult life feels imminent now.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 16/04/2026 13:22

Still waiting on Warwick too @Wehaditsogood . The deadline for responses should be before exams start (before the end of April here in Scotland).

Wehaditsogood · 16/04/2026 14:06

@WhatWouldTheDoctorDo According to Student Room the last big batch of Warwick offers went out on 16th April in 2025. Who really knows?! It can't be too long now.

TheMasterplan23 · 16/04/2026 14:40

DD had offers from all 5 she applied to. She’s firmed Warwick and Exeter is her insurance. She’s hoping to do Neuroscience :)

jkhj · 16/04/2026 16:25

We too had an unexpected UCL rejection for Maths, dd is predicted 4 Astars ( maths further maths, econ and chem) and they wanted aaa. Was Dd favourite and is now questioning the whole system (overseas allocation and the a level stress/timing) yet fully knows her focus must stay on upcoming exams

i know that UCL put a lot of weight on personal statements, I know I’m biased, hers was excellent (also echoed by maths professionals) so left wondering….

Kcl is her favourite out of her offers (bath and Bristol are the others)
she really wants to stay in London and although initially interested in moving further away she now wants to live out for 1-2 years only (we are London based). She is aware kcl is lower down the tables than bath and Bristol yet for her, its in London and it has more balance between applied and core (her favourite) maths, Bristol is the next match on this regards.

she seems to have made her heart and mind up, I’m left wondering if turning down Bristol and Bath for kcl is a good move?? Any thoughts would be really appreciated at anyone with KCL maths experience?

hope that makes sense, my old brain won’t allow me to spot my mistakes until two days later 😆

AuntyBulgaria · 16/04/2026 16:40

@jkhj that's tricky! I think generally the student should go where they want - they will only blame you later if you direct to an alternative and they don't like it. Though I would be twitchy if my DS was turning down maths at Bath!

jkhj · 16/04/2026 16:49

@AuntyBulgaria thank you for you reply and understanding the dilemma, most definitely alllow to follow her heart (although it is known to change at the last minute), yet I am feeling the twitchiness regards bath and Bristol- two highly regarded maths unis (guilty of also feeling happy she want to stay in London).

pinkdelight · 16/04/2026 17:15

@jkhj - please don't you or your DD overthink the UCL rejection. A quick glance at the 6thform reddit will show you a vast number of brilliant applicants got rejections this week all with very strong stats beyond the required grades. It's no failing on the applicants' part and not even just a matter of internationals. These are simply incredibly popular and competitive courses that could be filled with great cohorts many times over so there's a huge element of luck as to whether you get in the cut or not. So don't agonise over what if her ps was better or any of that. There was nothing more she could have done and it's just the way of things for these top unis now. Part of the gamble of shooting for them, but was worth a shot.

And she's still got some great options there with KCL, Bristol and Bath. Sounds like she should go with her heart and firm KCL. These are all good unis and a few places difference in the various rankings won't matter that much in reality. The pros of moving out of London for B&B are balanced by the pros of staying in London with all the benefits that brings. Going to KCL won't hold her back.

jkhj · 16/04/2026 18:18

@pinkdelight thank you enormously for your ever so reassuring and thoughtful message, I really appreciate your words. You are so right it’s just how things are and following your heart can never be a bad thing.

HebeJeeby · 16/04/2026 18:23

@EducatingRosemary hi, my DD is a 1st year at York and loving it. Regarding accommodation, you cannot apply until results day to give everyone a fair chance at getting their choice. You have to put 7 choices down a mix of nonenSuite/en-suite/catered and self-catered. DD was told to put a spread of colleges to give her a chance of getting one of her choices. My DD was very lucky she got Anne Lister self-catered en-suite which was her first choice. However, if you pop over to the York parents page you will see that not everyone gets their first choice or even any choice. A few students last year had no on camp accommodation at all. It really does seem to be a lottery which hall they get.
David Cato and Anne Lister are very modern and seem to be the most popular and are on East Campus which is a free 5 minute bus ride or 10 minute walk to West Campus where most of the lectures are. It might be worth having a look online onThe York uni page as they give 360 degree video tours of the different colleges and rooms.

maturemummy · 16/04/2026 18:27

@AuntyBulgaria DS attended the Bath open day with DH. They both took an immediate dislike for the Uni & it was off the list ( he was looking at maths &/or physics. I was so surprised they dismissed Bath so swiftly that I ensured I went to all subsequent open days too 😬
