How have first week of A-levels gone for everyone?

Only sat the one (FMaths) this week. Fairly confident thus far, Two next week then ten after half term.
DS woukd prefer to just get on with them to be honest.

Onthesofawithmydog · 16/05/2026 07:44

Has everyone’s DC applied for student finance? My dd had three exams this week so although I told her to do it a few weeks ago she hasn’t had the headspace and left it last minute, only to find the website crashed for most of yesterday evening and she couldn’t get on, and has therefore missed the deadline. I’ve been told it’s a soft deadline rather than a hard one so hoping if she can get on today and do it, it should be fine?? 😬😬

DS has had two - Monday and Tuesday last week. He has three next week (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday) then a break and three in a row after half term. Rather wish they weren’t all in a row and were more spread out.

Ventress · 16/05/2026 08:25

Bath seems to be very popular for STEM amongst this group. I hope you all get the accommodation you want.

DS has firmed UCL, although a lot of his friends have been rejected by UCL and are thinking of taking a gap year instead. I quite like the idea of a gap year to make some money!

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 16/05/2026 08:32

We’re in Scotland hence the ‘nearly finished’ as the exams started a few weeks earlier here, although DS’ are late-ish in the exam diet, quite a few people he knows are already finished.

@Onthesofawithmydog - Scotland has it’s own application process, but people who got uni offers up to the wire on 13 May had until the beginning of June to firm their offers, so surely there must still be an opportunity to apply.

SilverBlue4 · 16/05/2026 08:57

You can still apply for finance after the deadline,.it's just not guaranteed to be sorted in time for them to get their first payment in time for uni wanting the money. If yours is not complicated it will probably be fine though as when we did it, it was sorted and confirmed within a few days.

NellyNoMates · 16/05/2026 09:02

DD’s student finance has been approved and payments scheduled, but they are currently blocked because HMRC does not recognise her NI number. We had an issue getting it when she was 16 because we had never claimed child benefit for her and have moved around a bit, but eventually got it and have proof of it in writing from HMRC. Seems we now need to send that proof to student finance to ensure her payments are approved. We had similar issues with DS and his NI number when he turned 16 (wasn’t automatically sent it and we had to jump through hoops to get it) but his student finance never had this issue. Glad we applied when we did so we can get this all sorted prior to clocking off for the summer.

Two papers done and three coming up this week then a pause for half term.

Student finance application done last weekend. Registration done for accommodation (although nothing happens with that until after Results).

Revision ongoing!

DS doesn’t start his exams until after half term! It’s odd to think that some have finished already

I keep reminding him about student finance. Perhaps now he’s on study leave we might get some action 🤞🏻

hanahsaunt · 19/05/2026 12:02

@Muchtoomuchtodo and @NellyNoMates ds's first exams are today and he has two 🫣 closely followed by one on Thursday. We go through to 16 June and he he has another day with two on the same day which seems rubbish given he only has 8 papers in total across the whole 6 weeks.

NellyNoMates · 19/05/2026 13:21

@hanahsaunt Two exams on one day is tough. DD has her first 2 both on Thursday, but thankfully it’s the only day she has 2 on one day. 4 weeks today she gets to wake up for the first time all year with absolutely no thoughts of studying… and then gets the joy of heading into town to get her first dose of the MenB vaccine. Confused

2 down, 7 to go.

DD had History (AQA) today and came out miserable as sin. She said it was awful.

I’m trying to lift her before her next exam on thurs, but she’s told me ‘it’s too soon’ to start thinking positively. She needs to wallow in despair for a bit first.

gluenotsoup · 19/05/2026 17:43

My dd said the history exam today was awful too. She feels like she did a decent job of q2, q1 was so awful she started it and then changed to the sister question, did it well enough but then ran out of time to complete q3 and had to miss a paragraph out to do a conclusion.
Dhe says they all came out saying it was a shocker, so if they all feel the same that’s good for grade boundaries.

Yes, DD has now said that everyone’s saying it was tough. Onwards …

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 19/05/2026 19:22

Another example done today, and one more to go on Friday. DS has gone out for a couple of hours to decompress, he’s utterly broken. Exam leave started immediately after the Easter hols for him, so it has been a solid month of revision and the cabin fever is real. Nearly done though.
