In terms of appeals; being close to a grade boundary doesn’t by itself indicate any error in marking, it is just that a small error has a bigger impact. On the other hand, the people I know who successfully appealed exam results weren’t close to the boundary but rather got an unexpectedly low mark in a paper they were very confident of (backed up by past work). In both of those cases it seemed the marker had missed a whole page somehow. This is very rare but appealing is not limited to people sitting on boundaries if a result seems very ‘off’.

mumsneedwine · 02/08/2026 11:35

Well yes, appeals if they've missed a whole page are the v easy ones ! Teachers can see the papers now so those will be picked up fast. The tougher decisions are where we've looked at the answers and we think the mark scheme should have given it - this can be quite subjective unfortunately. Exams are marked by humans (teachers who are totally doing it while also teaching) and mistakes will always happen.
Be aware marks can also go down !

mumsneedwine · 02/08/2026 11:36

And anyone can appeal any paper - not teachers decision but yours. Costs though. Free if grade goes up but otherwise it gets pricey v v quickly.

@mumsneedwineWe have a friend whose DD is on the waitlist for two med schools, and she currently has no offers. We're in England. Do you think it's worth calling the two medical schools this week after Scottish results day, or should they just keep an eye on clearing?

inae · 03/08/2026 09:14

Good luck to all YPs getting their results tomorrow!

mumsneedwine · 03/08/2026 09:34

@inae no harm in calling and asking if there is likely to be any movement on waiting list. There certainly will be things happening at Unis already as they have the results a weeks earlier than schools (& you). 🤞🤞

inae · 03/08/2026 09:46

Thanks.

No harm trying but not many Scottish students apply to England as they save £60k staying in Scotland. Also as universities get results a week early they go into ‘purdah’ a week before results day so won’t be able to communicate anything about this year’s admissions from later this week until results day.

mumsneedwine · 03/08/2026 12:47

@Sachetaandb you'll be surprised how many Scottish students head south. Places in Scotland are limited.

And Unis won't communicate with UCAS this week. But they will know if they have gaps due to grades not being met and start offering off their wait list. Manchester did just this last week (I'm sure others did too but I have personal knowledge of Manchester).

Sachetaandb · 03/08/2026 14:06

From UCAS website:

7 August 08:00 – 13 August 08:00
Results embargo – during this time:
applications will not be updated
universities and colleges cannot discuss any applicants’ individual status with them, or with an adviser
the adviser portal will update on 13 August at 07:00 (UK time) when advisers will have access to updated applicant statuses, so they can identify those who may need support. Advisers must not under any circumstances disclose the details relating to exam results, application status or mention anything which could be used to infer that information to applicants, parents, guardians, universities and colleges, or with any colleagues, who don’t have access to this information through the adviser portal, until the embargo has lifted at 08:00 (UK time) on JCQ results day.

mumsneedwine · 03/08/2026 16:54

And ????? UCAS aren't doing anything, Unis are. Not sure what point you are trying to make - is it your job too ? We have had 2 off wait lists in last 2 weeks (when Bac and Scottish results were released to Unis).

Happens every year. Clearing will go nuts this time next week (not for medicine) and some people will get emails telling them their offer is now unconditional. UCAS don't do anything until after results day.

mumsneedwine · 03/08/2026 16:55

No one is talking about results. They are just amending offer status. All v legal

mumsneedwine · 03/08/2026 17:00

PS it's not yet the 7th August 🫣

No one discusses it. They just tell them there is a place on the wait list 🤷‍♀️. Had another one today so we know they are moving 🤞

Thanks - I have a question 🙂

What tech would you recommend buying for university - eg. laptop, tablet, etc? And are there any apps/subscriptions worth signing up for?

mumsneedwine · 04/08/2026 08:10

Good luck Scotland (playing it safe 😊) 🤞🤞🤞

Itsallstressstressstress · 04/08/2026 08:35
