Southampton publishes Clearing grade requirements

I think this is the first time I've seen an RG Uni publishing Clearing grade requirements before Results Day.

It's not for all courses but a lot of popular subjects nonetheless

https://www.southampton.ac.uk/clearing/course-vacancies?subject=All+Subjects&filter=&studentType=uk&availableOnly=true

Not sure what it means for those students holding offers at Southampton - does it indicate how far they can drop grades and still get in?

Thanks @WombatChocolate that's a great explanation. I know I should stop trying to overthink and second guess. The suspense is driving me potty.

DS's firm course (offer AAB) was in clearing for BBC until yesterday. Now changed to BBB.

Can anyone knowledgable about the sector interpret what that might mean re acceptance rates, if anything?

Yes, more Firm and Ins students are coming than anticipated.

poetryandwine · 12/08/2025 19:29

But not that many more.

OvaHere · 12/08/2025 19:41

Thanks @poetryandwine I honestly don't know if that's a good sign for DS or not. He doesn't think he's done brilliantly but who knows if he's a good judge of his own efforts.

He's disheartened by art which he knows his mark for. If the grade boundaries are favourable he may get a B if not a C. It was his top GCSE subject for which he got an 8 but he really struggled with the volume of work at A level on top of mocks, revision and the extended project he took on. With hindsight he wishes he didn't do the EPQ.

OvaHere · 12/08/2025 19:45

He also had to put together a bunch of different portfolios at the same time as the above for the courses he was applying for. For any future prospective A level art students or their parents who might read this really consider how pressed for time you are in Yr13 and try to make decisions accordingly.

poetryandwine · 12/08/2025 19:45

I am sorry to hear this. Remember that most who go into Clearing will be carefully considering dropping grades for their own Firms as a first step. Best wishes to DS.

Thanks. Nothing is the end of the world. We have plans A, B, C and D ready to go on Thursday.

Been following this thread and just noticed that Loughborough Uni has also published clearing vacancies. The course my DD is looking at for 2026 which requires AAB is asking for BBB in clearing. On another note, does anyone know if unis are flexible about GCSE grade requirements, given that they are dropping A level grades? A friend's daughter has a 4 in Maths but many of the more competitive unis ask for at least a 5. She's looking at Business.

Tryannie · 13/08/2025 08:27

Loughborough even have Sports & Exercise Science (no grade drop). Lots of courses at BBB with a two grade drop and some like English and straight Physics at BBC which is a 3 grade drop.

ed for spelling

GrumpyMuleFan · 13/08/2025 08:30

@Teatotally I'd love to know that too about English.

Anyone know when Reading show their clearing grades? It just says which course, and not the grades. I may be looking in the wrong spot.

WombatChocolate · 13/08/2025 09:26

The GCSE grade requirements are usually hard requirements with zero flex. Sorry.😢

Yes, I think there needs to be a good general fit to a degree, so if it is a maths heavy degree and a student hasn’t got a strong pass for GCSE maths then you’re really pushing water uphill and she’s going to find the content very challenging.

Teatotally · 13/08/2025 09:50

Thanks all, that's confirmed what I suspected. I emailed Durham about my own DD who has been predicted two A stars and an A at A level but has a 6 in Maths and Durham want a 7 for their Marketing course which was in clearing. They said they looked at the application overall, needs to meet the requirements etc but the inference was that there wouldn't be any movement on GCSEs. So she won't be applying there as also other unis have said they will offer Maths support for the financial modules which may not happen if students are expected to get a 7 in Maths. I think the point someone made about trading up probably also applies to Durham.

TizerorFizz · 13/08/2025 09:52

@Tryannie Not enough young people want to do those subjects. It’s nationwide. English is not anywhere near as popular as it was. The vast number of engineering courses suck in physics students. Those doing pure sciences is dropping. Too much choice and the rush to computer science is causing this.

Last year I think they published the day before.

From memory most courses were around CCD so unlikely to be much different this year.

Thank you @HPFA

fluffythecat1 · 13/08/2025 11:12

Reading unfortunately missed their target for clearing recruitment last year so I’m 99% sure that grades will be the same if not lower.

stubiff · 13/08/2025 12:40

@fluffythecat1 They're not going to go up!

gobbl · 13/08/2025 16:04

Warwick and bath have places in clearing but not with clearing grades

HPFA · 13/08/2025 17:10

York is up - BBC for Politics - blinking eck!

Back in the day my old history teacher was a York graduate who kept telling us York was the "equivalent of Oxbridge".

Lancaster is also up.

BBB for an A*AA course (Natural Sciences)

DeoHelp · 13/08/2025 17:16

Wintom · 09/07/2025 21:18

Wow... midwifery and physiotherapy want high grade. Higher than neuroscience. How things have changed in the last 30 years.

They’re both popular courses and are always oversubscribed, hence the entry requirements reflect this.
