Son didn't pass degree

Hello, please be gentle as I am heartbroken for son. He has not passed the degree after failing to get the required credits. He can resit his exams but the most he can achieve is a pass, and no Honours. After 4 years of study he is devastated. He worked hard and passed his dissertation. I am in shock and it breaks my heart to see him so downhearted. Anyone have advice please on how to navigate thru this and keep him feeling good about himself. I am trying to remain positive but inside I am devastated. Thank you

UPDATE: Son won his academic appeal on extenuating circumstances and can resit his exams without penalty. He has a chance of Honours. Very pleased for him.

That's good news! You must be relieved.

Really pleased to hear the update and wishing your son all the success he deserves.

I have seen CVs with eg “BSc (failed)” on them!
He’s done the course and learned a lot. It’s not the end of the world, even though it might feel like it at the moment.

tripleginandtonic · 07/08/2025 18:27

That's good news for him. When are the resits?

Motnight · 07/08/2025 18:28

That's fantastic news, Op.

He had an undiagnosed medical condition which impacted him throughout the year. He is in a much better place now to show his academic ability.

My friend got a 2:1 from Cambridge in Maths, whilst another friend of mine flunked out of uni. Guess who owns their own events business and is earning £100k and guess who is a secondary teacher on £45k. Degrees aren’t the be all and end all. Sometimes life forces us into routes we wouldn’t have otherwise taken, but are actually better for us.

Let us know how he gets on.

UPDATE:

Son has just got his resit results and has been upgraded to an Honours degree. He got 87% in one exam he failed. He was 2.5 marks short of a 2:1.

Very happy with his result now considering he had a pass at the end of June, and no Honours.

He is now considering appeal for degree reclassification given his medical condition was undiagnosed throughout Uni. He started medication in July, and it has helped him enormously.

Thanks all. x

I’m really happy for him. Well done

OP so he was told in August that he could resit yes? Do they run exams through August for resits? I don’t know much about this but it’s important know!

He was told in August that he could have a resit and sat them two weeks later.

He did very well. I would accept the 2:2 and move on.
Plenty of places for further study will accept a 2:2.

Motnight · 12/09/2025 17:54

Brilliant news, Op

Dearover · 12/09/2025 20:13

What a relief for you

FiveBarGate · 13/09/2025 09:13

Fantastic. I was hopeful he'd be considered under academic appeals given the circumstances.

You have done a fantastic job in supporting him.

Hope you enjoy that graduation ceremony. Will it be November?

Whatabouterry · 14/09/2025 09:57

I’m so pleased to hear this update. Well done both of you.

Hello and thank you. He actually graduated in July with a Pass degree. His degree was returned when he did his resits and will now be reissued with Honours. It worked out well. x

I'm sure he's learned something from it too.

I do interviews with graduates and we've had some be totally open about having to resit as examples of how they have shown certain strengths.

It's impressive to see how someone has turned something difficult around, within the right context.

Fingers crossed for the reclassification but even without it, it's a fair result on a tough degree.

NCTDN · 14/09/2025 17:32

Such a good result in the end, and not an easy degree to do in the first place!

JulesJules · 14/09/2025 21:27

Great update OP, well done to him.
