DD doesn't have a uni Term 3

Just that really.

She chose modules this year, her first year, that all completed in terms 1 & 2.

She has no lectures and no assignments, nothing, until October 2025.

£9250 academic fees, plus 39 week let fees.

Surely this can't be considered ok?!

If we won’t pay more, then we need to redefine the product and make it a cheaper product.
Ideas that have been suggested on this thread include 2 year degrees, virtual degrees, hybrid of virtual and residential, moving over time to a more local/regional model so that funding goes on tuition and not accommodation. I may have missed some.

oh believe me the universities are going full tilt to make it a cheaper product though not with any of those ideas. The one you missed is the one they’re doing- cutting staff, reducing teaching time per module, reducing assignments, etc. generally diluting the experience

as a lecturer I’m getting sent on a session next week to be taught how to incorporate “peer marking” into my course. We are being told to stop/reduce having exams/assignments. Instead focus on in session student presentations and to save us marking it the whole cohort marks everyone.

I did a postgrad module years ago with this assessment strategy. It’s not exactly robust. We just gave everyone over 70%. We loved it. I can imagine with an undergrad cohort of 18yo who fall out with each other, etc it won’t be beyond the realm of impossibility that the cohort gives people they don’t like low marks. Never mind the possibility of racism and bias.

Yes I can see universities are making lots of these cuts and the burden on staff is increasing, that’s what I describe as “managed decline”. The current product is being made cheaper and cheaper (although the price is held constant), but this can’t go on for ever - at some point there’s no product of any value.

What I think is required is a radical new product. Or maybe it’s a variety of new products.

As part of a cheaper product, there could be standardised assessments marked by AI. AQA exam board is planning on fully digital AI marked assessments in English by 2030 I believe. It would be even easier in science to have standardised assessments.marked by AI.

worstofbothworlds · 07/05/2025 17:44

Just cut out the middle man, the student should just pay some money, get AI to write all their assignments, and then AI can mark them, and finally they can graduate in a month, but be totally useless to employers.

I'll do research with students who actually want to learn. Result!

I know we've said this before but university isn't school ...

We are using AI in lots of different ways, including supporting assessment but I don't think fully automating university assessments is a direction that we want to go in. I can't see how that benefits the students.

Prioritising non British students is one way Unis are trying to make more

Exeter Uni are not giving any Uni accommodation to Postgrad British Students. They will only allocate it to International students !

So despite their own own Equality policy they chose to discriminate against British students.

What an absolute disgrace our Universities have become.

What an absolute disgrace Exeter University is !

She was the one that chose the course, and the accommodation, and the modules.

In her position I’d be looking to get as much out of the available provisions as possible. It may well be possible to attend lectures even if she’s not being examined in them.

There won’t be any lectures and it’s not a case of choosing accommodation when the minimum let periods are set.

Please do not tar all universities with the same brush.
My university absolutely does not do this.

So you want to take one of the best HE systems in.the.world and turn it into a set of school assessments?

Your post shows how little you know about what university is for. And how little you care for knowledge, discovery, and your DC's generation.

People who argue this kind of cheapening of an excellent education system deserve to have their jobs, and their children's jobs, migrate to China.

The Chinese are investing multi-millions in education of their best & brightest in the UK (and the USA & Australia) because they recognise the values of our HE system: its emphasis on critical thinking, creativity, research, and resilience.

Same at a lot of decent unis. DDs course at Manchester is top 5 worldwide, so easy to fill. On average I’ve been told it’s 80% international students. Obviously they may be the best applicants but it makes you wonder.

There are plenty of places at UK universities.
International students are not taking places from home students.

MightAsWellBeGretel · 07/05/2025 20:29

I'm ancient, but aren't they semesters, rather than terms, so there are only two?

worstofbothworlds · 07/05/2025 21:01

@MightAsWellBeGretel It varies. Some have semesters, some still have terms.

Very interesting! More an essay than an article in length. There is lots there in the history of universities I wasn't aware of. What a shit show we have now though. (No fault of the lecturers)

Yesterdaytodaytomorrowagain · 26/06/2025 14:10

Scottish universities have 2 semesters, Sept - Dec then Jan - May , exams in May and that’s them till Sept again, except I’m paying halls of residence till end of June. It’s just the way it is!

FinallyMovingHouse · 26/06/2025 14:35

Just asked about 2 of my DC who are still in Uni - both have 2 long semesters. 3rd semester is for postgrads and it ends in late Aug apparently.

If you’re paying, can they stay until the end of June?

Yesterdaytodaytomorrowagain · 30/06/2025 08:25

@Coldilocks yes they can stay till the day the keys are due back if they want to, but the place is empty as everyone has gone home!
