Will try to add old threads, maybe good for us to give an update of where our DCs are at

Hello! I hope everyone's kids are enjoying the long summer and not finding the wait and uncertainty too difficult.
DD got her results yesterday (IB) and met her offer. It was a long day as the results didn't arrive until the afternoon, but a very happy outcome once they arrived. So pleased for her!
I can't remember if there are any other IB applicants on here - I really hope they got what they needed if there are.

Huge congrats to your daughter. My DD unfortunately missed a mark. She had to get 36 points overall with 666 in highers.
She got 5 in chem, 7 in biology , 7 in politics.
Standards French 5, maths 6 and English 7. Then 2 core points so 39 overall.

Really sorry to hear that. 39 is an amazing overall score; hopefully that will be enough for her to get her place anyway. I think the new science specs this year have been really tough. One of DD's friends is in the same position (with chemistry) and waiting to hear too. Everything crossed it works out for her.

Thank you. She may have to re sit the exam but we are where we are so we will just have to adapt and overcome x

Wait until A level results day. Things will start changing on ucas the week before as results come in and Unis can assess the near misses. It’s not a no until they utter those words 🤞🤞

So hoping that her overall score is high enough

@JuMcGoo So sorry to hear that you DD narrowly missed her aimed result - hopefully it won't matter in the end and all will go ahead but as you say, if it a resit that is not the end of the world. I've been mentioning that to my DD every few days too, not that she has her results yet.

@mumsneedwine just so I understand would you say it is only the uni's that they have an offer from that would potentially look at them if they miss a grade? So they are the only ones to look at for clearing, though the unis will have looked at them already and assessed.

mumsneedwine · 09/07/2025 09:13

@SoTiredNeedHoliday your firm and insurance choices will get your results a week before results day. They look at near misses and decide to still offer or not. You find out when UCAS updates (occasionally it says pending which means they are still thinking). If it’s a No then you can look at clearing at any other Unis, but for medicine you need their required grades to be considered. And you can’t apply to any that have already rejected you this year.

Hope that makes sense.

SoTiredNeedHoliday · 09/07/2025 09:48

thanks @mumsneedwine yes that makes total sense. We have our plan set for the day now, fingers crossed a resit and gap year is not needed but if so that's ok too!!

Africa2go · 09/07/2025 12:42

@SoTiredNeedHoliday just to say there can be anomalies on results day - my DD missed her offer by 1 dropped grade (2 marks) and was rejected by her firm (and only) offer. For what it's worth (she thinks this was a factor), the dropped grade was in her 3rd subject and even though the uni didnt say it gave credit for EPQs, she had an A at EPQ. She received a call about 12 noon on results day offering her a place at a uni she'd interviewed with, but been rejected from after interview. She hadn't called them or been in touch, it was out of the blue. Hopefully everything will go according to plan but just wanted to say strange things can happen so stay close to phones, explore every option!

SoTiredNeedHoliday · 09/07/2025 12:56

@Africa2go thank you, that's good to know

Yes it is definitely worth getting in touch with the other universities which you applied to. Dd was told by a university (at interviews to whole cohort before offers) to contact them if you didn't have an offer on results day.

I just saw on Insta (I’ve very new to it so only just seen it) that Brighton & Sussex are saying they have a few extra offers to make - I’ve never seen that before (though I haven’t been looking) and just wondered if it might be something your DD could look into? Not sure if it might be too late now though as it opened at midday.

I was super excited by the BSMS thing as it’s my fav med school for my DD - I just feel it would suit her down to the ground and the other students I’ve seen so far make me feel she would fit in. Just 2 years too early!

She’s been volunteering with St John Ambulance tonight and I was at the event she was volunteering at, and was so proud to see her in her uniform. I went to collect her to take her home at the end and she couldn’t leave because she was treating someone! My big worry is whether she has enough confidence but I think this was a great experience for her - she has another event in a week, so the more she does the more it will help her. I’m going to get her to write down her reflections on the experience tomorrow so she has it all documented ready for personal statement and interview prep!

Thank you. I’ll certainly give them a call.

mumsneedwine · 11/07/2025 08:40

Get DD to give them a call. Parents will not get a positive response. Good luck !

W0tnow · 11/07/2025 09:26

Good luck to all of your kids. My daughter has just completed first year at Exeter and is off to Cornwall for a 2 year stint from September. She is loving it so far.

SoTiredNeedHoliday · 27/07/2025 10:30

we're getting quite nervous ahead of results day - the time has gone quite quickly since exams ended!

mumsneedwine · 27/07/2025 11:04

Not long now 😊. Plan something the night before to make time go quicker (cinema, theatre). Plan on not getting much sleep so have a book or hobby near by. Expect UCAS to crash at 8am.

And good luck !

HGC2 · 27/07/2025 16:16

Do they get an email with a ucas update on results day or just have to check?

OP posts:
mumsneedwine · 27/07/2025 16:28

@HGC2 they have to check. But will likely get an email by 9am from Uni if successful. Depending on school you might get results first. But UCAS usually keeps popping back up so just refresh often.

Really, your son/daughter should be aware of how things run on that day!

Her son/daughter probably is. It is us parents who are out of the loop!

Fair enough 😂
there is just so much of 'our and 'we' with parents running around doing all the research for prospective med students.
FWIW, my DC graduated last week and they totally drove everything, from looking at stats to apply strategically, organising open days, sorting and booking their own UCAT date etc. I'm mostly a lurker and chip in every now and then but the trend does seem to be for parents (mostly mothers) to be over involved in the application process. I'll get loads of posters disagreeing with me. But that's ok.

DC starts F1 next week and I'll probably ween myself off those threads 😁

WeCantGoOverIt · 27/07/2025 17:23

ramonaquimby It is easy to forget how little your knew when your DC was at this stage. Most of our DC are doing all the running around, finding things out themselves. Though my DC was more than happy for me to pay the UCAT fee and the date we needed meant travel and an overnight stay which required my involvement/credit card. But as parents we do want to support our children and most of the research just brings us up to their level of knowledge so we can be a helpful sounding board. I didn’t go to any of the open days (but would have loved to!)
