Will try to add old threads, maybe good for us to give an update of where our DCs are at

DD has firmed and insured medicine. She wavered between choosing her 5th option as her insurance but then realised that it is just medicine she wants to do! Onwards and upwards to the exams

We had the same - especially as the fifth choice was unconditional. It took a bit to wave goodbye to a certain place - not least because if he messed up his AH then his fifth choice might not be so keen next time round. Fingers crossed starting May Day.

mumsneedwine · 16/04/2025 13:23

@WeCantGoOverIthis 5th choice might be in clearing (if it’s giving unconditional offers !).

possibly, but hopefully not needed! If things get messed up that much then I think some time rethinking might not be a bad idea. The fifth choice was a bit ‘I should put something down’ rather than a really positive alternative choice.

mumsneedwine · 16/04/2025 13:47

@WeCantGoOverIthaving 2 medicines is def the better option. But he only needs one.

Hope exam revision going well. This is always a weird time, just before it all starts, but it will be over soon.

If someone doesn't meet the offer conditions for a medicine offer they will usually be offered another programme at that university. This will usually be a biological science programme (e.g. biomedical science, physiology, anatomy), rather than another healthcare programme. It can be worth calling them at that point if you do want a place on a different programme, although it obviously depends on whether there are spaces available.

That is interesting, never heard that before. But I actually think it would be better to step back and rethink rather than jump at another offer. Think through exactly what it was about medicine that attracted you and what alternative careers might offer the same, or whether you have another interest you now feel more free to pursue.

I agree. The reason I was making the point was to back up suggestions that non-medicine insurance choices often aren't worthwhile if you have two medicine offers.

WeCantGoOverIt · 16/04/2025 18:07

Agree. Which was why DC firm and insured the medicine offers. Now 🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀 for the exams!

WeCantGoOverIt · 16/04/2025 18:09

Assignments are now in and study leave starts next week. First exam on May Day.

DD has firmed and insured medicine too. A level revision focus now - shes having a bit of a wibble, the pressure is quite high!

NoNotHimTheOtherOne · 17/04/2025 18:21

A wibble? You mean she's stuck two pencils up her nose and put her underpants on her head?

Someone recently mentioned their future med school applicant child had set up a Linkedin account so that they can demonstrate their intrest in medicine and medical issues. I then also saw on a course for potential med students that they would take photos for them to use on Linkedin - this got me to thinking that maybe Linkedin is a tool some students applying to med school. Have any of your heard of this or any of your YP done it?

WeCantGoOverIt · 21/04/2025 14:41

Sounds odd. Certainly not something my DC did. What are you meant to do with it? Put a link in your personal statement? And what do you put on your account? What were the photos? Portrait photos of themselves?

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 21/04/2025 16:44

@SuperSue77 I think it is very unlikely that it would be a factor because most of the universities have very formal, checklist style assessments for each step/ each station and there will be no box to tick for LinkedIn profile. I think most probably won't even look at it.

If though there was anything inappropriate I guess it could raise a red flag. I am not sure that all 17/18yr olds would necessarily know what might raise a red flag because they are still very much formed from their background at that stage. So they might for example say that their ambition is to go and work in Australia. Whilst this might be their intention, when the NHS is paying for training it is not wise to say you intend to work abroad ASAP.

WeCantGoOverIt · 21/04/2025 17:19

Yes inadvertently putting up red flags could be an issue - a little too much detail about work experience, volunteering or family experience could be seen as breaching confidentiality. Exaggerating experience might raise questions around dishonesty. Both very easy things for a 16/17 year old to do online. Expressing any sort of political opinion would also be a big risk.

mumsneedwine · 21/04/2025 17:29

No Uni is going to have time to look at any social media during the application process. They are busy enough trying to short list using the (mostly) clear published criteria.

maybemedmum · 23/04/2025 11:30

DD now on study leave - feels very strange that she hasn't gone back to college after the holidays. First exam is on May 5th.
Hope revision is going well for everyone. DD is certainly working hard, but feels like it's rapidly approaching and she's not quite ready!

WeCantGoOverIt · 23/04/2025 11:45

Good luck to everyone with exams!

Ib1234567 · 23/04/2025 13:00

@maybemedmum can you ask why it is early? Good luck to her and everyone.

My DC start study leave tomorrow (first exam in the Scottish exam diet is on Friday)

maybemedmum · 23/04/2025 13:21

Hi @lb1234567, DD does the IB rather than A Levels, so they are on a slightly different timetable (and have an exam on the bank holiday!). She finishes on 23rd May. I think the A level students go on study leave in a couple of weeks here.
Yes, wishing everyone the best of luck in the exams.

SoTiredNeedHoliday · 23/04/2025 13:26

Hi All, this is off topic slightly but has anyone heard of MME predicated papers? An advert came on Instagram. I've never heard of this group.
Are they useful study references?

mumsneedwine · 23/04/2025 18:52

@SoTiredNeedHolidayNO ! They are some random guessing what’s on this years paper by looking at past years. They might get a few questions right but they also make people not revise parts of the syllabus that end up in the paper.
Just revise it all !
