Starting a thread re: performing arts applicants for 2025. If one already exists, happy to be redirected!!

Anyone pressed 'send' on their applications yet? Curious as to timelines for initial responses and to submit self tapes....

Buckling in for a long and nervous journey!

Was it in Manchester? DD thought there would be more there. The pianist and messed up her music, but she kept going 🙄

Ah no, she was in London. About 30 there, split into 2 groups for dance and 4 for acting and singing. Sorry to hear the pianist messed up for her. They don’t need any more stress.

Operagirl1 · 02/03/2025 16:09

The pianist messed up when my DD auditioned for Mountview last year. Maybe they need to up the calibre!!

😂. They messed up for a few apparently. One girl came out and said ‘did anyone else have a problem?’ DD was so relieved as actually had apologised at the end, as she said you never blame the pianist.

The ones that had problems were all from other places, none from Mountview Foundation, or so they said! 🙄 conspiracy theorists so young!

lamada · 03/03/2025 16:46

Best of luck to all those who are auditioning, such a stressful time.

Would anyone know something about the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, my DD's amateur theatre group are bringing some students, (ages 12 - 18 yrs) for 2 weeks this summer, putting on some shows, but it is almost 4k for the experience. It also clashes with a 1 week dance programme she was hoping to do, just not sure what would be more beneficial for her to do, she says it would look great on her CV to have EF on it, but would it many any difference to her applications.

Wondering if any other kids have done something similar.

Thank you.

Newgirls · 03/03/2025 17:25

It costs a fortune to stay in Edin during the festival so can see how the costs add up but that is a lot!

going to the festival is amazing for inspiring young people in the vast variety of performance, seeing new work and the range of jobs in the industry.

don’t think I could pay that but I would take them for a day or two

Paddlinglikehell · 03/03/2025 19:59

Arts Ed sent out emails today, extending their application deadline for their courses. I wonder if they’re struggling to get the right people applying?

Newgirls · 04/03/2025 08:05

Is that one that charges high fees?

I wonder if everyone is waiting to see what they can get elsewhere first?

Comefromaway · 04/03/2025 09:28

Arts Ed have top up fees yes and you can only borrow £6.5k on student finance towards them.

Comefromaway · 04/03/2025 09:30

It won't make any difference to her applications although it would undoubtedly be a great experience.

Great experience, but no way I would pay that, that’s practically a holiday for our family of 3!

Can they not camp? I have great memories of going when I was 18 and camping with friends.

It's an organised trip and there are a few younger ones going,, so i guess camping is not something the chaperones would want to deal with. Even so, it's hostel accommodation for one week and then a cabin somewhere for the 2nd week, not even a 3star hotel for that price..

It is outrageously expensive, but we could afford it if it was really worthwhile..

Sorry I see now they have 12 year olds, so yes, not practical.

A difficult one.

Newgirls · 05/03/2025 08:22

I think paying for NYT and BYMT summer courses is worth it. The standard is so high and drama schools recognise them. This Edin trip sounds a wonderful idea and perhaps better than some of the trips abroad schools offer as at least it is exploring part of the uk and supporting the arts

It wouldn’t make a difference to applications, it’s the self tape/audition which counts.

Whilst EF is a great experience it actually depends on what you are doing and who with rather than just EF in general. Sounds like this would be regarded as an amateur company performance?

its also very expensive and not sure the cost would justify the experience.

depending on your DC age and ambitions there are better opportunities for summer activities like NYMT, BYMT, NYT or a summer course at a recognised school which offer CV enhancement if that’s what you are after, and skills and confidence development.

At one of her auditions last week, my daughter met some others who were currently doing a Foundation course at Italia Conti. They said that they train from 8- 8 Mon-Fri and 8- 4 on Saturdays. Were they exaggerating or is this true? It sounds completely excessive and a horrible student life. They also said the IC School is in a shopping centre....my daughter had good work ethic and expects to have to train hard, but what the girls said has put my daughter off a bit, especially the shopping centre location.

It is usual for MT training to be long hours.

i’m not sure of Conti hours, although I do know they used to go in on Saturday morning, but training from nine until seven in the evening is pretty normal on a good course. Usually they would have an hour or two off during the day.

Italian Conti is in a shopping centre. It’s a new build shopping centre where one side of it is their Studios, and you can see from the shopping centre the windows with the dance Studios so technically you could see the students performing from outside. It’s a brand-new building and facilities are pretty impressive inside.

My daughter who is at GSA will start most mornings at 9 am, they usually have to be there in half an hour before for warmup in their own time. She will have lessons nearly all morning and then may in the afternoon have a break of two hours where she then go back into class and have another two hours finishing at around 7 o’clock. My daughter also does extra dance classes two nights a week which are accessed by others outside GSA but on the GSA premises and we pay a bit extra for this, but for students it’s really cheap.

I think this all reflects the type of industry they will be working in and also it’s a requirement to get the hours up that they need for the qualifications.

Also bear in mind that some performing arts colleges are actually not part of the campus or institution at all, for example PPA is a unit on a small industrial state, performers in Brighton, previously ICT, is out of town in a pretty rundown area, surrounded by car welding and other similar units, although the building itself is quite nice inside with modern studios.

@Paddlinglikehell thanks that is really helpful information.

i would suggest have a look on Google maps of the various colleges. Some are Uni campuses like GSA, Rose Bruford, Chichester, others are either purpose built, like Mountview and Trinity Laban or use old buildings, I think ArtsEd was probably a school, but it’s in a pleasant area of London. Royal Central is in their old building I went to 35 years ago, personally I think it looks a mess, but what comes out is good.

Also Conservatoire’s tend to do longer hours, there’s a reason for this, but I’m sure someone else will know why!

Mcmumager · 05/03/2025 11:24

My dc is at royal Welsh and hours are 9-6 but there is often a couple of hours off in the day. They will also often book studios there in the evening and weekend to practise - it’s definitely not an easy option doing MT but if it’s what they love they are happy to be doing it. They say they want their moneys worth 😂

The facilities are amazing and yes it’s in a shopping centre ..a very modern one with easy access by bus and train

Think there’s quite a few who work on either Saturday evenings or Sundays. Not sure of exact numbers that they take from the Cert course into the Ba but think it was mid 20’s last year.
Has your daughter looked at accommodation? Mine is at Guilden Village in Guildford it is expensive but it a lovely complex with fabulous facilities and feels like a campus. Last year they were provided with a bus pass or student rail card plus money can’t remember how much as my daughter took the bus pass option

Mumofteens20 · 05/03/2025 11:56

@Hatethewaiting thank you so much for replying. Yes she has reserved a spot at Guilden village, and they said about the bus pass too, which will save her some money which is fab. Is your daughter still set on doing a BA, and has she got any offers for this year? Fingers crossed for her 🤞🏻

Thank you ..Her Conti audition is either 31-3 or 1-4 so a bit of a wait
She has been offered Performers in Essex and Laine ..
She did get degree offers last year at Wilkes and Bird but decided she wanted to do the Cert course at Conti. She feels so much more prepared and confident auditioning this year and she said it was the best decision for her
