Starting a thread re: performing arts applicants for 2025. If one already exists, happy to be redirected!!

Anyone pressed 'send' on their applications yet? Curious as to timelines for initial responses and to submit self tapes....

Buckling in for a long and nervous journey!

Has anyone’s dc done the recent intensive at Urdang or done it in the past. Looking for a MT summer school and wondering which would be most useful ( dc applying for 2026). It’s just difficult when there is no accommodation for most schools but at 17 you can’t stay in a hotel with a friend etc. Obly one I’ve seen is trinity Laban with halls and bird with hosts. Trinity isn’t on their list and not keen on a host.

My dd did a summer course at Laines. She really enjoyed it and stayed with a local family. They give you a list of families and you apply to them direct.

Thank you. She did the Easter one there- really enjoyed and loved it therebut wanted to try somewhere different and maybe a bit more challenging ( and maybe more affordable for full time training 😂) for the summer.

Not Urdang, but DD did the Arts Ed one, which she felt was amazing, no accommodation though, she stayed in a small hotel nearby, but there were a few air bnbs near too.

However, GSA did a weekend one, we all went down as Guildford was a great weekend place, the pianist there suggested she change her audition song, she did and then started getting offers. Shame she’d already done and sent off self tapes!!

Movement is starting on waitlists.

One of the students on waitlist for GSA MT has been offered a place.

My DD has decided to turn down Rose B for a place at GSA.

Shes also been asked to return this summer to her entertainments job, but at a different resort.

I’m just glad we’re sorted for hopefully 3 years!

How’s everyone else doing?

Oh wow, congratulations to your DD that is amazing. She will be joining 2 fab people on the MT course who go to school with my DD. They have also accepted their places at GSA. My DD is also waitlisted for GSA MT but we have just thought there is no chance she will get in so has accepted her place at Urdang. There is a group chat for the new cohort. I can get you the details for it, best of luck to your DD , exciting times ahead ☺️

We got an email from GSA yesterday explaining what happens with reserve lists on 16th May when they have to respond on UCAS and that nudged DC into accepting their RB offer. Lots of friends also making their decisions now too.

So glad to be able to start making accommodation arrangements and planning!

All the best to those waiting for movement on reserve lists 🤞🏻

Decision made! And celebrate!! 🍾

I’ve been so impressed by RB and the teaching they are receiving. I am sure she will love it.

Sounds like this week will be a flurry of waiting list movements! Good luck to those waiting for places

Sad news from The Scottish Institute having gone into administration with immediate effect. Although having seen their balance sheet on Companies House I can't say I'm surprised.

My daughter was so torn about RB or GSA, we went for a visit a week or so ago and it looked a great place to study.

I think if she hadn’t just done Foundation at GSA she would have gone.

It’s Contemporary & Applied Theatre, she’s just finishing Foundation MT and has really enjoyed it, but wanted to concentrate on the Acting side with a difference.

My daughter is currently at drama school with 50 in a year but she is unhappy there for various different reasons (do not want to say where so as not to identify her). The only other college she liked last year was Bird and was offered a foundation. However she felt a lot of things went wrong for her in the Bird audition so she re auditioned this year and has been offered the degree. She is choosing to move to Bird in September. One of the reasons is that she sees the same 20 people all the time at her current college and wants to have a wider mix. However the size of the cohort is large at Bird. No other colleges are an option. Please could someone let me know the advantages to a very large cohort size? I see it as more people to mix with, more vibrant community, ability to stream classes and more contacts after leaving. Is there anything else? I’ve heard the negatives in various threads so not interested in hearing them because they’ve already been said if you see what I mean!

Newgirls · 11/05/2025 08:36

Sometimes having a fresh start, a bit older, is just what they need (like a new job). Large cohort will be good - as you say more people to meet and on a day to day basis they will be in smaller groups too for teaching. Good luck to her

What are the implications of this for her student loan? Is she planning to complete a whole year at the present place or leave now and start afresh in September?

Anyone else watch the BAFTAs and then Google where they went to drama school? Marisa Abela mentioned getting an agent in her final year and went to rada - I bet they get all the agents go to those showcases

Yes 🤣 and also regularly check the cast lists of west end shows to see where they trained too 🤣

My daughter is a Conti so 100 in her year group - they are split into two year halves they’re set 4 days a week by there level of jazz/ballet so they are 4 dance sets on total. On the 5th day they are set by their tap as their maybe dances who are grade 8 ballet, but have never put on tap shoes.
Dance sets are reset every term, half year groups change every year. This gives you the opportunity to learn to work with a wide variety of people and keeps you fresh.

The bigger year group means a bigger variety of shows in final year so you are more likely to be in a show that suits you.

Most colleges take a West End theatre for a lunch time performance on a non-matinee day for their showcase. DD’s showcase was in the Piccadilly where Moulin Rouge is currently.
Over 110 agents attended. The whole showcase agent scenario is stressful and it takes a while for a to shakedown DD had her showcase late Feb and final signed with her agent on 1st of May.

Newgirls · 12/05/2025 14:06

OMG that sounds intense and amazing! I’ve been in that theatre. Did they have the giant elephant in there too? That is a lot of agents so surely a good sign - did they mostly all get agents?

I've been following this thread for a while and find it really helpful. Thanks so much for all your posts. And congrats to you all on supporting your DCs to follow their dreams. I'm looking for advice, please. My DD has offers for BA Acting courses at Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and Guildford School of Acting. Location is not an issue. She had a very positive experience with both schools during the audition process. Just wondering if anyone has opinions about the standing of these schools in the industry?
