Camp America

Are there any parents whose kids have done camp America?

My daughter is currently taking a gap year before going off to uni next.
She is really interested in doing camp America next summer.
We have had a good chat with a student who has just been for his second summer in a row. We have had loads of useful tips and advice from him. He did say you don’t do camp America for the money because you actually end up being out of pocket and you do it for the experience.
That suits my daughter fine as she is definitely wants to do it for the great experience.

Just wanted to know if anyone’s child has been and if you can tell me about their experience.

Thanks in advance.

Spoke to ds today. He has six more days of camp left and then a few days in new york.

He's ready to come home he says. He went on may 11th so it's been a long time. Can't wait to see him!

Bigearringsbigsmile · 12/08/2025 23:02

We will also be picking him up at 7am!!!

Swimmum1206 · 13/08/2025 11:16

Had a brief message from DS last night when he arrived in New York. He'd flown there from Cody/Denver. He'd spent the previous day on a tour of Yellowstone Park. Apparently it was absolutely amazing. He still can't believe he was stood on an active volcano! I think NY will be a bit of shock for him after that! So pleased he's getting such amazing experiences and making so many memories that will last a lifetime.

IsItAllMenopause · 14/08/2025 10:31

I've still got another 3 weeks before DS is home. He's had a great time. We've all missed him and will be glad when he's back.

I have loved reading all the stories of our kids at camp America.
My daughter left camp last Saturday. She was so sad and wanted to be there again. She went straight to New York for 4 nights and had a fabulous time. Now waiting to hear where she is off to next, she is with others.

I feel so proud of all our kids for having the guts to do camp America. What a fantastic opportunity for them all. X❤️

@Lbet will she be doing camp again next year? DS2 is on the returners invitation list so will be expecting an email in November. This time he will be booking his own flights and travelling.

how did she find NewYork ? DS2 had to travel between airports but found getting an Uber mental (his words).

turkeyboots · 20/08/2025 13:49

DD is home too and is a jetlagged exhausted heap of a child. She loved camp and is invited to return, and is currently planning on it. But she starts university in Sept, so we'll see what the year brings. She visited Boston and New York on the way home and loved Boston so much.
She misses the outdoors, the kids and her new friends but is delighted to be back in her own bed.

Yes she has a confirmed place for camp next year. She is off to uni this September so hopefully it will slot in with the Summer holidays.

She loves New York and is off to Washington tomorrow for three nights.

How is your son since being home? Bet you have heard some great stories.

@Lbet He’s fine thank you. He is currently in London watching the cricket at Lords and then West Ham v Chelsea on Friday 🙄 with one of his mates from home and an Aussie he made friends with at the camp.

it took him a while to get over the jet lag, but he’s shown us videos which were taken out there. We are still waiting to see the camp video but apparently it’s not the public one, so should be interesting.

He had lots of stories to tell and said the kids were amazing but it’s a completely different world out there as he explained one kid flew into the airport near the camp by private plane 😳.

Best thing was he’s made a load of new friends, some of whom he’s meeting up with in the next few weeks. They are also planning a trip to Australia (🤞) to watch the ashes.

Great to hear that your daughter has a confirmed place for camp next year, they seem to like returners. Hopefully like DS2 she can fit it in with uni. 🤞

My dd is currently at Disneyworld, 7 of them from her camp there. She’s not home until 2/9. Got paid cash and has managed to get it into her uk bank account. She’s planning on returning for summer 26 to same camp.

JockyWilsonsaid · 22/08/2025 09:31

DD came home, slept, and has now gone to Reading festival. Lovely to have her home (albeit briefly!) She had a fabulous time and was buzzing with stories and photos. Thank you all for the company and advice - feels like a very long time ago we started discussing our DC going and now they are all coming home! A great experience in so many ways.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 22/08/2025 12:04

We've just picked up ds from the airport. His flight had been delayed and he was tired snd stinky!
He's had a shower, a bacon and egg sandwich and has gone to bed for a couple of hours.

Lovely to get a hug from him!

Bigearringsbigsmile · 23/08/2025 17:04

Am wadingvthrough his laundry....🤢🤢🤢🤢
Omfg!!!!

JockyWilsonsaid · 23/08/2025 17:36

Oh dear!! I dread to think.. DD was a bit of a legend and between checking out of the hotel and getting to the airport spent a couple of hours with her suitcase at a launderette and washed the lot!

@Bigearringsbigsmile I share your pain. 1.5 days of washing tops, socks and everything else. This does not include the green hoodie which doesn’t wring properly in the washing machine. We also had to febreze/air out the suitcase 🙄

Bigearringsbigsmile · 23/08/2025 17:48

Yes I am definitely going to have to do something to the suitcase!
He says he's been washing everything but I think it's all contaminated by the socks and trainers!
Have bought laundry sanitiser for the first time!🤣

@Bigearringsbigsmile ha ha yes 1 box of napisan was used here. We were told it was mainly due to the washing at the camp, I believe it was down to the washing powder they used.

I’m surprised DS2 came back with any socks as he said half of his went missing when he put them for a wash.

Lbet · 25/08/2025 22:00

Oh gosh what have I got to come this coming Sunday🙈

Collected DS from Heathrow yesterday. His flight landed an hour early! Luckily I’d checked flights radar when I got up, so got there on time. He was buzzing at first and tried to get me to allow him to drive home! Let’s just say I said no! First stop, was to see my parents as it was my mum’s birthday, then he quickly fell asleep in the car on the way home!

Every item of his suitcase has gone in the wash! Apparently the machines on camp weren’t too good! He’s come home with several fleeces, hoodies and blankets! Oh and around 400 photos, which he’s gradually showing us.

it’s so good to have him home and he’s had the most amazing time. He’s seriously considering going back next year.

Hi all,

We are picking our daughter up tomorrow. Did you all park in the short stay carpark for arrivals?

I was planning on
parking in the short stay, but his flight landed an hour early, so he came out to the meeting area. I was a bit disappointed as I was hoping to see him come through arrivals!!

@Lbetwe did park in the short stay car park but be careful as we ended paying £18.50 as DS2’s flight was slightly late. You may have to drive around for a space but we found the top levels easier.
