Camp America

Are there any parents whose kids have done camp America?

My daughter is currently taking a gap year before going off to uni next.
She is really interested in doing camp America next summer.
We have had a good chat with a student who has just been for his second summer in a row. We have had loads of useful tips and advice from him. He did say you don’t do camp America for the money because you actually end up being out of pocket and you do it for the experience.
That suits my daughter fine as she is definitely wants to do it for the great experience.

Just wanted to know if anyone’s child has been and if you can tell me about their experience.

Thanks in advance.

My DS is still loving it. I'm missing him...feels like he's been gone ages and still 6 weeks till he's home.

Oh really 6 weeks, did he go quite late then?

I had a quick FT with my dd yesterday, which was lovely. Her kids have left and new kids arrived earlier in the week. She’s still loving it and looks so happy and healthy.

Yes he only went the second week of June. Although that seems like ages ago now!

Investinmyself · 01/08/2025 18:49

Yes mine went 23/6 and finishes 15/8 at camp. She’s only travelling 2.5 weeks after not full 30 days as needs to be back for uni by early September.
@imsosotired my dc is also looking really happy and healthy and natural - she can’t straighten her nice wavy hair at camp.
I was worried about food as she’s fussy but she’s loved it. Chinese night is my favourite is not a phrase I ever thought she’d utter! They gave her $20 for dinner each night on the 3 day trip she’s been on with the kids.

Mine leaves camp next weekend! It's gone so quickly, for both her and me. She's had the most amazing time and is buzzing every time I speak to her. She's gutted to be leaving, but has made some great friends who she will be spending her final 2 weeks with, travelling around. It will be great to have her home, but she's not looking forward to normal life resuming and very much wants to return next year.

Same with DS2. I can’t believe his time is nearly over at the camp. I know he’s had a fantastic time making new friends and working hard.

Hope everyone’s kids are still enjoying their camps. On our way home from Heathrow now having picked ours up again - 2 months went by in a flash but she’s had a brilliant time with lots of tales to tell of both good times and more challenging ones - talking of returning next year :)

The kids leave the camp today so DS2 has a couple more days there then 3 days before he flies home.

can’t believe this time next week we will see him again. 🥰

DS finishes camp on Friday, then they're helping to clean up/close it. I think he's leaving camp on Saturday, then he's travelling for a couple of weeks. We get to see him again in just over 3 weeks! I can't believe how quickly three months have gone!

turkeyboots · 05/08/2025 13:28

Dd is finishing on Friday. Shes both happy and sad it's almost over.
Did anyone book a US airport Hotel for their under 21yo? I can't find one which says they let 18yos check in. Its really annoying if it's observed, hopefully it's not.

JockyWilsonsaid · 05/08/2025 13:37

Does she have to stay at the airport due to horrible flight times? As otherwise, she could just stay in NY for the night before if their booking rules are less rigid.

Her friend is flying out the day before her, and she doesn't want to stay in NYC alone. She might have too if we can't find a work around.

We have booked a hotel close to the airport in Asheville but can’t remember seeing anything about 18 year olds not being able to check in.

imsosotired · 07/08/2025 19:33

We booked my daughter into one of the Hilton hotels by the airport, we chose that one because it specifically states it allows bookings for under 21’s

lorn195 · 09/08/2025 06:11

DS2 is safely in the hotel. He’s tired but glad to be coming home. He going to chill for the next couple of days as his flight to JFK leaves midday on Monday.

can I ask is any other camps using Cliq ? He mentioned that it’s the camps preferred way of paying him.

Can’t believe he is coming home, it only seems 5 mins ago that he was leaving to go. My daughter has got three weeks left now, a week left with campers and then travelling for two weeks.
Sorry I can’t remember how my daughter is being paid.

Well that’s it, Camp is officially finished! Really can’t believe how fast it’s gone. He’s on camp until this evening, then they’re being “taken down the mountain” and off on their travels. He’ll be home I. Two weeks and we can’t wait to see him. He’s grown in confidence so much these past few months.

@Lbet It does feel like 5 mins he was leaving to go, where has that 9 weeks gone ?

DH and I believe DS2 is ready to come home but alt least he’s got the cricket in London to look forward to in a couple of weeks.

turkeyboots · 09/08/2025 08:08

DD is off travelling too, slowly travelling down the eastern coast to NYC with her new friends. And then home and straight into exam results and hopefully moving to university 2 weeks after she's home!
She has loved it and also gained confidence with the experience.

Mine was paid on Cliq - basically got a debit card which can be use all over world but there are fees for various things including using a pin plus a 3% charge to use it abroad.
she used it in the US fine and we have just used Remitly to transfer the rest to her UK bank account

lorn195 · 12/08/2025 16:49

DS2 is home and asleep. We picked him up from Heathrow this morning. 😊

He is planning to return to the same camp next year and will be travelling afterwards but It’s so good to have him home.

We can see he has definitely got taller and lost weight but still very stocky. He looks fabulous for it. He’s also come home with some tattoos 😂 which his friendship group have also got.

too many to list but thank you ladies for all the support, it’s been great hearing all about everyone’s adventures. I will definitely keep an eye on the thread, but maybe we could do the same next year?

LadyTottingham · 12/08/2025 18:32

DD is now home and was also a Heathrow pick up this morning. She is very tired but has had a great time and got herself a whole new friendship group. She would love to do it again next year and she says, should anyone be thinking about going, she can highly recommend it.

Hoping everyones DC are having/have had a great time as Summer camps start drawing to a close.

@LadyTottingham I hope the pickup wasn’t too early this morning, we were at Heathrow for 7am!

Glad you've got them home safely and they had a wonderful time. DD is travelling around at the moment with new friends before heading home next week.
