The countdown is on. Uni move in has started for some unis and is right around the corner for others. How are we all feeling? Wishing the best of luck to all freshers!

Well dd is now a real student. She took part in her first “peaceful protest” today!

radiator2 · 28/09/2024 23:57

DD now thinks she has freshers flu, right before lectures begin on Monday 🤦‍♀️. Anyone have any tips on how to get rid of it. TIA

We have always found Sambucol to be brilliant. Take vitamin c through Sept to March

BoreOffAboutYerChickensEmma · 29/09/2024 00:46

Great reading updates. DS is happy, flatmates are all on different courses but they are all getting on as friends. They have had pizza nights, movie nights, games nights and also been and done their own thing.

Has anyone heard of of Travelteer? It is a volunteering thing, DS is keen but I need to research it as they go abroad - most likely Sri Lanka or Morocco.

Karmaisagod · 29/09/2024 07:45

I have not, @BoreOffAboutYerChickensEmma, but would love to know more, as DD has always been interested in spending some time abroad doing something like that. Thanks for the tip.

Ours seems to be one of the last to start, so I'm taking DD over today. Shortly will be playing boot Tetris, it doesn't look that much in the lounge but I know in front of the car it will be an entirely different matter.

Her two friends from college arrived there yesterday, one is on a similar course so I think there may be some cross over of lectures.

It still doesn't seem real though.

MrsMcNallysMaureen · 29/09/2024 09:01

Not heard of Travelteer @BoreOffAboutYerChickensEmma but it sounds interesting. Agree about Sambucol it's magical.

Hope it goes well!

I saw a post online where someone had lined up all the Toy Story toys in their son’s bedroom window and took photo of them looking out 😢 That set me off thinking about the end of their childhood and start of new adventures.

SwedishEdith · 29/09/2024 11:01

Not sure if it was Travelteer but my eldest did something like it in Morocco. Only for a few weeks but working with children.

It’s lovely to read about so many DC settling in. Even though they’re adults we still worry so 😅

I was speaking to neighbours the other day, and they were saying how much they still worry about their son. He’s in his 50s!

MirandaWest · 29/09/2024 17:11

Was rather missing DD this morning and then discovered that the church choir she’s joined live streams their services on YouTube. So I watched it this morning and could see DD singing 😊 made me feel happy knowing she was singing with others at that moment 😊

mrsconradfisher · 29/09/2024 17:14

DS is settling in well, has been good shooing and done laundry. But is really unhappy with his flat. No chance of swapping unfortunately as so many students still in temp accommodation. He is in a flat with 1 other fresher, 3 second years (1 of which is “off his head” according to DS and a 25 year old international student. He said the whole vibe is really odd. All the other flats seem to be out and about having fun and DS has been in his room the whole weekend.

that’s lovely you can see her.

@mrsconradfisher is it still worth asking for a swap. Your poor son. Some may want an anti social flat hopefully to swap with.

ShamblesRock · 29/09/2024 17:45

DD is all dropped off. In a flat of 12, the others seem friendly enough, a mix of male / female.

Her two friends from college who arrived yesterday came over to meet her.

She had a few tears a couple of times, in particular when her younger brother who has autism and can be oblivious to everything gave her a card saying he'd miss her.

I'm going over in a few weeks, mainly to take her gf as it isn't easy on the train.

Hopefully once lectures start in earnest he will have friends on his course.

My D is finding similar, none of her flatmates socialise at all, despite asking. It's been a lonely week she hasn't been to the pub once!
She's been to a couple of mixers and chatted to people and joined as one societies. I'm really hoping this week is better. Lectures start properly and she has two of her societies having Icebreakers this week in the evening.

She's been so excited for university, and it's really been a challenging week.
We went up to visit her Saturday, took her out for lunch, shopping etc so the weekend wouldn't be so long.but she was very sad when we left and wanted to come home:(

It’s so tough on them. DS took a gap year specifically to get to this particular Uni(I did lots of posts on here at the time) so has been waiting to go for over a year. It’s not been the start he wanted.

Ooh, was it good? I am anxious about him going as he has only been at uni for a few weeks and now is talking of going to Morocco or Sri Lanka in the summer!

Investinmyself · 29/09/2024 21:11

Mine has struck lucky with her flat as virtually all are social and they have been out most nights. She deliberately chose a bigger flat and cheaper accommodation in the hope of a social flat.
I know you can specify single sex or quiet but to me it would make sense to be able to describe yourself and they could match you eg I enjoy drinking/I like clubbing/I like quiet nights in etc. Whichever type you are it must be awkward if you are the odd one out. Maybe some unis do this.

Investinmyself · 29/09/2024 21:12

DD’s flat have adopted a few from quieter flats so hopefully once they get talking to people on courses they can tag along with another group.

What uni? Wondering if one of us has a child there who can help? DS is at Staffordshire.

Investinmyself · 29/09/2024 21:22

Although thinking of matching my husband was put in a shared room at uni with a lad from a nearby town to him. I always imagine a kind lady in accommodation office thinking oh they will get on. If you know the towns there’s no love lost and a big football rivalry so it wasn’t a good match.

mrsconradfisher · 29/09/2024 21:23

Loughborough, uni itself is brilliant. It’s just the flat is really odd. Lectures start properly tomorrow so hopefully things will improve.
