Following on from the old thread which was getting full….come and share the highs and lows of the journey that is A Levels and UCAS!

@Cantonet No, she didn't apply to either of those. She got her UCAS in about the end of October.

I'm a late joiner to this thread...just had a little read through to see if Bath offers have started coming in yet and seems they're starting to trickle through so hopefully not too long to wait.

Ds has had offers from Bristol and Sheffield, which is his insurance choice, rejection from Kings and is waiting for Leeds and Bath. He really, really wants Bath and the longer he waits the more uncertain he's becoming that he'll get an offer. He's predicted A*AA and has a strong personal statement but the rejection from Kings has knocked his (usually unwavering) confidence.

Hope others who are still waiting get some certainty soon!

ffalafel · 19/02/2024 19:52

@mamaduckbone don't worry, DS also waiting for Bath, heard from all other relatively quickly before Christmas. Think they have a reputation for being later than others.

OurspoonscamefromWoolworths · 19/02/2024 20:34

Also waiting for Bath.

That's what I'm trying to tell him!

Takeittotheboss · 19/02/2024 20:56

DN waiting on Bristol, UCL, Imperial, Edinburgh, all known for late responses but it is disheartening as school friends get all excited and settled in choices. Lost out on Oxford earlier so feeling pretty flat all round.

listsandbudgets · 19/02/2024 21:25

DD got an offer to Bath just after Christmas holidays but I know a lot of her friends are waiting. She'd done their Pathway course though and was guaranteed an offer so you can't read too much into it

Quite a few of her friends variously had offers (and some rejections) to Bristol, Imperial, Durham and Edinburgh some weeks back but I strongly suspect it depends what course you've applied to as I know there are some still waiting.

good luck everyone hang on in there

Innisfree · 20/02/2024 09:56

DS got a contextual offer from Glasgow last night, for Classics, which he’s planning to insure. Waiting, not-so-patiently, for St Andrews and Durham. Exeter and Newcastle already offered. Really wish there was a shorter period between the Equal Consideration deadline and the UCAS offer deadline. 😬

🤷‍♀️ DS was just observing everyone looked the same - there wasn’t a judgement that he didn’t like or was intimidated by the “copy and pastes”. Just that they all seemed the same. And that that felt odd.

Of course, he means the way they look - as I very much doubt in one weekend he got the opportunity to get to know any of them meaningfully.

One of the reasons that boarding school kids often look the same is that their friends sort of become their family and because they spend so much time together, they become v similar with clothes etc.. Also, unlike day school kids they do not have the same protection of their families day to day and so often take the safe option with clothes, as being rejected from their peer group/ or rather 'fitting in' becomes even more important when school is their whole world. my thoughts!

OurspoonscamefromWoolworths · 20/02/2024 12:14

What is the point of a 'we are still considering your application' email? DD just received one from Newcastle. She got excited that it was going to be a decision either way!

TheOnlyMrsW · 20/02/2024 12:28

Hugs and Flowers to those still waiting, it does seem to be a very drawn out process! We're in the thick of offer holder days here, and instead of providing more clarity it's actually muddying the waters, I have no idea which way DD will go at the moment and neither does she 😢

Aardvarksforall · 20/02/2024 12:46

Anyone heard from DMU? DS had an interview a couple of weeks ago and heard nothing yet.

stoneysongs · 21/02/2024 13:23

I think you have a point @loveReading66

I guess it's easier to be a bit different from your peers if school is a smaller part of your life as a non-boarder. Plus non-selective state schools are more socially diverse, so maybe more of a mix of influences going on anyway. Being different isn't quite as different iykwim.

(I hope that isn't too controversial - I went to boarding school myself so not having a go 😬)

ffalafel · 22/02/2024 07:21

DS finally got an offer from Bath last night, he is very pleased, it wasn't originally his first choice but as time has gone on he's become more keen and hoping to be invited to an offer holder day (maybe the long wait made it seem more desirable!). Hopefully this means Bath offers will start coming out for others now.

Thelightis · 22/02/2024 07:26

DS is still waiting to hear from Imperial but he absolutely loved Warwick at yesterdays offer holder day which he's likely to be firming now due to his visit with Durham as his insurance

He's not one to be overly enthused about things but he said Warwick was beautiful and loved what the departments had to offer

I'm so pleased he likes it there because I think a campus uni real really suit him.

Yes that makes sense. I went to boarding school for a while and well remember the lack of family protection - it was a weird combo of outward confidence but much less on the inside. And certainly the school I went to it was conform or die. I conformed, my sister didn’t and it’s affected her whole life. I had supposed much had changed in the intervening years but maybe this part of it will always be there.

DD finally has all 5 offers in. Waiting to hear about an offer holder day for one that is a likely insurance but firm is decided on so feels like some headway being made.

Thelightis · 22/02/2024 08:44

The great thing about uni is that's it's a melting pot full of different students from different backgrounds

If you want to look down on others then so be it they'll just find different friends

But most state schools are also a huge melting pot of diverse backgrounds so they'll get on just fine at uni

I imagine it must be hard coming from private schools because you are separate from the rest of society in a way and some genuinely think they're above everyone else

I could give examples because DD has a few DC from private schools at her 6th form college and they are very sneery about others and laugh if others make a mistake in class and are utterly vile from the stories I hear from her friends. They also make a point not to mingle. Not all of them obviously but a fair few and it's very noticeable to others.

mondaytosunday · 22/02/2024 08:48

Congrats! What subject @ffalafel?

Umbilicate · 22/02/2024 09:29

I do think it's true - and insightful - that boarding school kids may present as more of a tribe, this continues well into adult life, all my friends who went to boarding school (many lovely) are all happy in big groups of people who are mainly like themselves. But more generally, there's a lot of inverse snobbery here, most private school kids aren't snooty, don't look down on others at all, they just want to make friends and have fun like any young person. They don't all come from houses like Saltburn.

Thelightis · 22/02/2024 10:28

Anyway re Warwick I'm very happy DC found it beautiful as I wasn't expecting that especially as he has visited Oxford and Cambridge so are worlds apart looks wise modern vs traditional but just goes to show you just never know what somewhere is like until you visit

listsandbudgets · 22/02/2024 11:12

@Thelightis I went to Warwick in the mid 199s and although on the face of it it's a bit grey the hinterland is absolutely gorgeous. I used to spend so much time sitting by the lakes or on the farm land owned by the uni over the road. I miss it to be honest although I think sadly a lot has been built on over time

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 22/02/2024 22:20

We visited Warwick to look at uni and it is so beautiful now compared to the 90’s as the trees have are grown. Not the stark place it used to be. It looks lovely now.

ffalafel · 22/02/2024 23:24

Thanks @mondaytosunday Engineering

mymumsdoor · 23/02/2024 07:49

Finally got offer from Bath for management. One grade lower than their entry requirements on website. Not sure why but very welcome.

Sorethroatpain · 23/02/2024 08:37

@mymumsdoor congratulations to your DC. My DS is in the second year of the management course at Bath and has really enjoyed it so far - lots of module choices and excellent lecturers.
