Imperial offers

Hi all,

DS had an interview for Oxford to read Maths, but didn't get an offer. He's really disappointed today but I know he'll bounce back. He has an offer from Warwick, which he loved, but he also really liked Imperial, and he hasn't heard from them yet. Does anyone know when they usually make their offers for Maths?

Thank you.

Hi, OP -

Congratulations to your DS on the Warwick offer! Warwick is an outstanding choicecfor Maths, as I am sure he knows. So that’s one top tier choice bagged.

Did DS take that MAT? Imperial Maths say that they endeavour to begin making offers to candidates who did well on the MAT in Dec and Jan. But this is balanced against the need of all universities to give equal consideration to everyone who applies by the deadline (so DS was a strong Warwick candidate, not a borderline one). Imperial say they are attempting to make all decisions by the end of March.

This info is available on the admissions section of the Maths website, together with quartiles of MAT marks for admitted applicants in recent years.

Best wishes to your DS

Thank you. This is really helpful. He did take the MAT.

It's a shame this thread stopped so abruptly

Has your DS heard yet @mynameisnotmichaelcaine from Imperial ?

My DS is still waiting from Imperial and has an offer from Warwick for Maths. He was also rejected by O.

He hasn't visited either yet but will be going to the Warwick offer day to look around

It's great to hear your DS liked Imperial because we no idea how it's set up there

Uni2024 · 23/01/2024 10:53

DC received the maths offer last Sunday.

That's good to know that they're being sent out

Lightsabre · 23/01/2024 16:40

@mynameisnotmichaelcaine , ds friend hasn't heard from Imperial maths yet. She had a very high MAT and has an Ox offer. She has a Warwick offer too.

mynameisnotmichaelcaine · 23/01/2024 18:53

DS still hasn't heard. He got 71 on the MAT, so not crazily high, but hopefully high enough. He loved Warwick, but it's always nice to have options.

OP posts:
GoldLash · 24/01/2024 07:37

71 is a good score anything over 64 is decent

I hope they hear soon from Imperial

Because the entry requirements are the same for Imperial and Warwick one of these will be DS firm and the insurance DS will put Durham

DS has sent off his list of 1 - 16 top to bottom choices of Durhams colleges which they asked for but even if you get your chosen college and firm due to that they have a habit of changing at the last minute.

GoldLash · 24/01/2024 07:40

They find out from Cambridge today

DS will be quietly gutted if loads of them on his course get a place there

Only a couple of people on his maths got into O but that was for CS and they had low MAT score in the 40's & 50's

There's still the step to come in a few months so that's added stress DS doesn't have to go through at least

poetryandwine · 24/01/2024 10:14

Yes, @GoldLash About 50% of Cambridge Maths students fail the STEP hurdle. I am sure that is a wrenching feeling

It must be crushing to get a place then not get the STEP or A Levels to get in to any university actually

That can happen to any of them applying anywhere so we have to brace ourselves if that happens

Thank for the insurance unis

Are they guaranteed their place on their insurance just not necessarily Halls ?

I don't even know

poetryandwine · 24/01/2024 15:37

Yes, if an applicant fails their Firm offer but makes their Insurance offer, they are guaranteed a place in the Insurance degree programme. As you say , accommodation may be another matter.

Of course it is always devastating not to make your offer. But Cambridge organise, mark and set boundaries for STEP. For some years now Cambridge have set those boundaries so that about 50% of Maths offers are failed; this is deliberate. I don’t like it because STEP tuition is wildly variable around the UK. That may not matter for the very best, but it matters for the majority.

The free resources provided by Cambridge are IMO of the 2.1 class with just a few people including a participant on this board dedicated and doing a great job. It isn’t enough for such a rich university making all the right noises about social mobility.

Top mathematicians in my kid's school all applied C as they think it is more fair based on the ability not something else. More than 50% O applicants scored between 90-95 didn't get the offer and 40% who scored more than 95 didn't get the offer.

GoldLash · 24/01/2024 18:02

@Uni2024 I was told that if they were scoring that high into the late 90's they were considered to be cheating

GoldLash · 24/01/2024 18:07

DS is in a foul mood. A few people got Maths offers to C today. Whereas no one got offers to O for maths including him.
He says he's not bothered as it's a different uni but obviously I can tell that he clearly is bothered

I wish imperial would hurry up

GoldLash · 24/01/2024 18:08

Well considered to possibly be cheating

How comes? Luckily DC didn't apply O. I will be very surprised if DC got less than 90 but not surprised scored more than 95. DC's MAT score will be released after April by applying through Imperial.

GoldLash · 24/01/2024 18:36

The MAT scores have been released they can access them already

poetryandwine · 24/01/2024 18:38

I am not at Oxbridge so I can’t comment on the Maths admissions policies at either place, @GoldLash and @Uni2024

Best wishes to your DC

MAT score will be released immediately after Oxford's offer day if you apply to Oxford. Otherwise, you need to ask Imperial or Warick for the MAT score. Imperial explicitly told us that we could only ask for the score after the end of the application cycle this year which is sometime in April.

GoldLash · 25/01/2024 02:22

Righty Ho

mynameisnotmichaelcaine · 25/01/2024 09:30

I went to Oxford, albeit a college that always tops the table for percentage of state school students, and the mathematicians in my year group were mostly state school kids who were exceptionally good at maths. My DD is there now, and, whilst there are far more private school and international students in her college, they are all just kids who are great at maths. Neither of us studied Maths. I only got AAB, so there were absolutely 100% definitely students with better academic results than me who didn't get a place.

Realistically, they have got to narrow the field somehow, and they are experts at doing that. I was extremely lucky, and I loved my time at Oxford. DD is the same. DS was unlucky and now has to look elsewhere. We have not even talked about stats regarding MAT score, because it's not going to change anything. It must be rubbish to get in the high 90s and not get an offer, but a kid who is that exceptional is going to do amazingly wherever they go. It's really disappointing, but focusing on unfairness and disappointment is not going to change anything.

Well said, OP.

Cx5 · 26/01/2024 09:21

Still waiting for maths outcome here too. I think it's going to be a long wait.

Lightsabre · 26/01/2024 09:23

I think for us (single science) the bulk of the offers and rejections came out in mid March. It's the last one ds is waiting for and if he's lucky enough to get an offer, he'll firm it with Warwick as insurance.
