Is anyone starting the journey of drama school auditions and starting to feel the stress? Maybe sending them to drama group was a big mistake lol.

Does anyone know if GSA reject via ucas or is it wait to hear via email? I assumed any drama school emails the results rather than ucas but realise I don’t actually know!

dramamum1 · 17/01/2024 22:52

highly stressful for us as well as them! But we will just have to be patient , best of luck 🤞🏻 Emile Dale next!

dramamum1 · 17/01/2024 22:54

Gosh, it’s so tough isn’t it . She got recalled on MT for the afternoon at Royal and is told she won’t hear anything for a while i don’t think?

KatyMac · 17/01/2024 23:03

Oh good luck everyone, this thread was a blast from the past!!

Dd auditioned 2 years got in, graduated and has been working (covid apart) ever since

For some kids it's the right choice

That's great to hear. Did they get a good agent straight after showcase/final show?

KatyMac · 21/01/2024 08:34

Not really, although they have had some good ones later on

They are freelancing, picking up contracts, adverts, choreography job, writing their own work (Arts Council film, fringe one woman show) & now touring with that work, occasionally covering classes for other people, but generally dancing, choreographing and earning her living

She bought her first house and moved in last week

Not the traditional route for MT but loving it

Superb. There is huge fixation on getting a big agent it seems, but the school dd is graduating from puts a big emphasis on creating your own work too, so it's good to hear that this has worked well for your dd.
My dd is a very hard worker so I'm confident she'll do something somewhere, although naturally concerned of course in the usual mumsy way!

Newgirls · 21/01/2024 17:25

I read last week that Peter capaldi didn’t get into drama schools and went to art school instead. Seemed to work out ok. What a random industry it can be!

From DD's experience it's a mixture Mountview they sent her and email, but Royal Scottish and Royal Welsh just updated the conservatoire section of the UCAS tracker. Finally Urdang she got told at the audition.
Her offer from Conti, they were told it would be 14 days before they heard, she us at the end of the alphabet and her offer came at 10.30pm on the -
14th day.

Bigoldmachine · 22/01/2024 07:23

There is a huge fixation on getting a big agent from the showcase because this is an enormously helpful stepping stone to getting in front of the big casting directors / to audition for the big shows straight away. Les Mis for example always have lots of fresh grads in the chorus and if you’re with one of the big agents you get through the door! So yes the pressure is huge because they all know what a difference it makes.

I got an agent but not one of the big ones. She was OK but I should have moved / tried to find alternative representation sooner!!! It’s true what they say no agent is better than a rubbish agent!

Creating your own work is of huge importance! Partly so you don’t go insane with the waiting and the rejection, but also because you’ll build connections, build your CV etc. From my career the work I created myself led to the most amazing opportunities, opened doors and led to me being cast in the best musical I did (through meeting the right people).

There are so many routes to success though. Some of the most successful people I know in the industry never went to drama school (although most did).

DevonCream · 22/01/2024 07:42

Do you mind me asking if all your kids sing, dance and act? Do they have to be able to shine at all three to even stand a chance with MT?

Newgirls · 22/01/2024 08:26

MT is so competitive. If you are particularly unusual or charismatic then maybe you’d get work anyway. Dance can mean being able to move around a stage with ease so it’s worth doing classes for timing etc

Mcmumager · 22/01/2024 08:45

@DevonCream my ds does all 3. Some areas are stronger than others but he loves them all.

Biscuitsneeded · 22/01/2024 08:52

@DevonCream For MT I would say singing has to be very good. If you're a phenomenal dancer and actor and can sing in tune but not amazingly you might get lucky and get an MT course at one of the more dance- focused colleges. If you can act and sing but haven't really done any dance, if you're a boy and show potential you might be lucky. Or you might try Central, or Royal Welsh etc where you will need to be able to move but you don't need to be a high level dancer at the start. But in essence, yes you probably need to be good at all three.

DevonCream · 22/01/2024 09:00

Thanks so much for the replies. DD dances really well, sings well but not her strongest point and acts satisfactorily! If pushed she will shine with all three. Just needs to get over nerves of performing in public!

Biscuitsneeded · 22/01/2024 10:55

@DevonCream If you have to push her it's probably not the career path/degree for her. These kids are utterly dedicated, seize any opportunity to perform and have to be resilient as hell. The audition process to even get on a course is arduous, stressful and probably bruising even for really talented young people. Sounds like she's a great dancer but wouldn't want to sing or act on stage. Why not look at dance only courses instead of MT?

DevonCream · 22/01/2024 10:57

Thanks biscuits. That's definitely another option. She really wants to do MT and it think she can if she pushes herself. But you're right. Needs a confidence boost in herself first or she won't make it.

Biscuitsneeded · 22/01/2024 13:28

@DevonCream If she really does want to do MT would she audition for NYMT or BYMT? Great performing experience, and you find out quite a bit about the industry and whether it's right for you. Good luck to her.

My dd has had interest from a top agent so we'll see what happens.
You mention that you wished you'd sought alternative representation sooner, is it true that changing agents quickly looks bad in the industry?
Congratulations on your career, incidentally - a very well done. Such a tough field.

DevonCream · 22/01/2024 07:42

My dd is actor first singer second with only basic dance training (although she moves very well). She has a strong voice but always knew it wasn't really good enough for MT and was more keen on acting anyway. Central tried to push her to the MT course as opposed to acting but she was adamant she wanted a 3 yr acting course so held her nerve and got a good acting offer elsewhere.

This thread has gone quiet. Anyone got any updates?

Newgirls · 29/01/2024 15:39

Still waiting to hear here

DalekFan · 29/01/2024 18:17

DD’s first audition not until 14th Feb. Nothing like leaving it late! 😬

Youarenotseriouspeople · 29/01/2024 18:36

My DD is on reserve list for ArtsEd - that's the only audition so far. She's submitted self tapes to PPA, Conti and GSA and has an audition at EDA on 14th Feb, Mountview on 19th Feb and Urdang on 13th March. I also think she's left it a bit late but learning fast to keep my opinions to myself 😂😬🫣

Newgirls · 29/01/2024 19:21

It’s a no for gsa here. Email didn’t give feedback or anything. It’s very tough process isn’t it
