I've been reading these threads- my ds was pooled and not offered, at least we know now. Well done to everyone with offers Flowers

OneworldJ · 24/01/2024 11:20

DC received offer. We are delighted. Now DC has to get the grades.

Sybill · 24/01/2024 11:22

@Rollergirl11 i have a friend whose DS is in his second year at C, having being picked up post exam results from the August pool. He had completely forgotten about it and was all set for a different course and city so was gobsmacked when the offer came in. Just something to consider but well done to your DD on her other offers and to everyone else on the thread too!

losingtheplot999 · 24/01/2024 11:24

DS2 changed his mind and looked at his emails. He got rejected from college he applied to but got an offer instead from Lucy Cavendish.

RockaLock · 24/01/2024 11:51

It's a no for DS, as expected Sad

WombatChocolate · 24/01/2024 11:59

Congrats to the families with offers.

Commiserations to everyone else. It was us a couple of weeks ago. I think both kids and parents need a bit of time for processing and making the shift from being one of a small group applying, to being one of a much larger group with places at non-Oxbridge. It’s a hard leap, even if you were expecting it and I think everyone suffers from a bit of hurt pride, although fortunately it’s pretty fleeting for most.

Hard getting results during school day, esp if there were other candidates in the school or college who got in. Sending hugs, because no matter what everyone knows about it being a long shot, the fact they will move on, re-direction etc etc, it’s still a tough day today.

TenSheds · 24/01/2024 12:03

So many stories of strength and resilience from the applicants today regardless of the news received. What a brilliant bunch of bright young things. I hope they all can start to feel excited for the future without this uncertainty hanging over them now.

PandaPacer · 24/01/2024 12:03

Good post @WombatChocolate, thank you.

It's a no for DS for Comp Sci as well. I feel weirdly relieved.

StElwicks · 24/01/2024 12:43

It’s a no for my DD for Eng too. I am just glad it’s all over, my DD is very pragmatic and I hope it’s just a slightly bruised ego.

Well done to all those with offers and commiserations to those without.

Braid2 · 24/01/2024 12:45

Offer for DD, we are delighted for her, just the grades now eek. Congratulations to everyone else and commiserations to all those who didn't get the news they wanted. Very fine margin business I suspect.

SeaofTranquility · 24/01/2024 13:13

Have one yes and one no, so an impossible situation. Feeling the sting. Not sure how to navigate this. All I know is that there is sometimes a hair's breadth of a difference between candidates.

I really feel for you it is an impossible situation as a mum.

Africa2go · 24/01/2024 13:26

@SeaofTranquility I cannot (as a twin mum) comprehend how difficult that is for you all. Wishing the whole family well.

stoneysongs · 24/01/2024 13:34

Sorry to hear that @Rollergirl11
Hope your DD is ok and doesn't get too much hassle from over-invested teachers tomorrow

lifeturnsonadime · 24/01/2024 13:56

@SeaofTranquility that happened in our family with Oxford offers, it's tough for both of them, and for you Flowers

Rollergirl11 · 24/01/2024 14:01

Ahhh thanks @stoneysongs. She’s absolutely fine. Slight sting to the ego but I think that’s all it is. She had already moved on so good to get closure. But she has mentioned that she’s worried about breaking the news to her teachers. So frustrating that they are a definite source of pressure for DD and they probably don’t even realise it!

Maggiethecat · 24/01/2024 14:49

congratulations to all those dc with offers. @prettycosmos - especially to your dd and hoping her achievement will bring you some comfort.

dd didn’t get an offer, was pooled but says she feels worse that no one else considered her.

mondaytosunday · 24/01/2024 15:15

No for my DD. She's very sad. But it's been a five month dream not a five year one and she has Durham and hopefully Bath and is now considering applying to Trinity in Dublin!!

Lancelottie · 24/01/2024 15:21

Ah, that's rough, Maggiethecat. DS had much the same feeling a couple of years back after being pooled and not picked up. What it shows is that they were able enough and displaced by the sheer number of others applying.

BiancaBlank · 24/01/2024 15:44

I wonder why they even tell candidates they were pooled if they were unsuccessful. How does that make it better!

WombatChocolate · 24/01/2024 15:55

Cambridge interview high numbers - higher than Oxford.

Back in the day if real life interviews, I think people received offers or rejections and were told they were pooled at that point. Then there was a shirt delay whilst other colleges considered them. Then most were told they hadn’t got an offer and some were offered from the pool.

Maybe now they just go through the full process before telling people. So in a way, being told you were pooled doesn’t serve a purpose, as it’s past tense, whilst being told you are in the pool, made sense in the past. It’s probably also the case that it’s necessary for those picked up from the pool as their offer comes from a different college to the one they applied to. Perhaps those pooled and then rejected are told because the rejection comes through a slightly different process and not directly via the college applied to.

For some people, knowing they were pooled is a bit of a comfort. They were the standard but there simply weren’t enough places. For others it’s more upsetting to know they were so close and didn’t get it. It sounds like a lot are pooled though.

Maybe someone else will be along with more info about why people are told this after the pool has closed, when it was previously information given when the pool was open and seemed to make more sense.

Rollergirl11 · 24/01/2024 15:58

Sorry to hear that @mondaytosunday. Trinity Dublin sounds amazing! I always think of the book/TV program Normal People when I hear Trinity.

BiancaBlank · 24/01/2024 16:01

Thanks Wombat, that makes more sense. Last year DD1 got an offer from a different college than she’d applied to, but there was no mention of pools at any point! (She didn’t even realise straight away, as she just ignored the little Location code on the UCAS page)

BiancaBlank · 24/01/2024 16:07

Sorry to hear all the DC who didn’t get the news they were hoping for today, but impressed how many have alternative plans up and running straight away! DD2 was turned down by Oxford but she also moved on quite quickly and I think I minded more than she did (indignant on her behalf).

Well done to all those with offers!

Thanks @Lancelottie - she is now doing the ‘maybe I should have applied to a less competitive college’ thinking.
Ive tried to comfort her, told her I still love her the same and now leaving her to go through her process of accepting the result.
