Sorry for your loss @prettycosmos

PandaPacer · 22/01/2024 06:27

That sounds like a stressful and emotional day @prettycosmos - I hope it all goes OK.

Came on to say that I am so thrilled this is almost over ha ha - just for my sake! We have not been discussing it out loud here. I thought it was a deliberate ploy but I asked DS last night if he was worried about Wednesday. He said "what, why?" and looked genuinely confused. It seems he has pretty much decided he is not getting in so has deliberately forgotten about it. He's more concerned as he has not heard back from Imperial after interview - he feels that is a more realistic chance for him.

Since his mocks have finished he has been working again with the paying client that he codes for so his head is all wrapped up in that. Small mercies! All along I have been worried if he will be upset with a rejection but I think we will be OK.

But I still want it done with! I am super proud he gave it a go.

Ragdollcharlie · 22/01/2024 09:34

@prettycosmos so sorry for your loss, hope the day goes as well as it can.

I thought I was doing ok with the waiting - but last night was full of dreams both ways (he got in, he didn't) - not looking forward to another two nights of that! looking forward to it being over. I think I prefer that we don't know when he'll hear for the other two he's still waiting on (Durham and LSE) as there's less tension when it could be any time iyswim.

SOWK · 22/01/2024 12:02

Waiting is tough. I’m also worried that Wednesday will be a pretty brutal day at school - there are a number of applicants at my DC’s school so I imagine it’s going to be quite an emotionally exhausting day whatever decision my DS gets.

Pleasealexa · 22/01/2024 12:31

@prettycosmos there must be so emotions so hope all goes well.

I would just like it to be over now and planning for no offer. I think it will be difficult initially telling people because expectations are high (amongst those that haven't gone through the process) whereas I'm way more realistic about the odds. A colleagues son got an Oxford offer and they are keen to hear our news...kinda wished I had kept it quiet now!

Ds has said he is ok with a No but not looking forward to reading a"rejection" email. Like the other applicants he's had a fairly flawless academic path (and lots of success in his hobbies) so this will be the first major knock back. All part of life and he is resilient. I think once everyone knows he'll move on quickly.

School have been lovely, his teacher sent an email saying they believe he meets the academic standards and are very proud of him, irrespective of outcome. 48 hours time will we all know??

Redhotchillipeppers · 22/01/2024 12:41

Sorry for your loss @prettycosmos

StElwicks · 22/01/2024 12:57

My DD is also waiting. She is being very ‘what will be will be’, and is generally quite calm. However some of the others who applied are really stressed so I think she is dreading Weds because it’s going to be a very charged atmosphere at school, which could be contagious. Her older brother did not get an offer and she knows how happy he is at his uni. I am just dreading being on tenterhooks. She is trying to be blasé. Roll on Thursday…..

Revengeofthepangolins · 22/01/2024 13:24

Best wishes to all the C crowd - probably not a madly productive few days :-)

The school dynamics can be a pain, especially if there are lots applying. Must be grim being the teachers, trying to deliver lessons while people are endlessly refreshing emails.

losingtheplot999 · 22/01/2024 13:24

Will be glad when Wednesday is over so we know one way or the other. DS2 has an in person interview at UCL on Wednesday as well. I think he will be disappointed if he doesn't get an offer from C. I think he has a good chance of an offer but you just don't know what they are looking for aside from being academically able which they all are otherwise they wouldn't have got this far.

CatBumJuice · 22/01/2024 13:38

This has probably been answered upstream, but does anyone know what time Cambridge results start trickling through on Wed?

AMuser · 22/01/2024 13:57

so sorry about your loss @prettycosmos - I hope the removal and funeral goes as well as they can for you & your family.

Waiting here and hoping to get it over & done with. DS says he will text me from school but expects to be in lessons when he hears. Not sure when that is or whether ucas updates first. I’ll ask for his UCAS log in but doubt I’ll be given it 😂😂

Rollergirl11 · 22/01/2024 13:57

@CatBumJuice i think any time between 9.00 and 12.00 seems to be the norm. I think they get an update on UCAS before the college email apparently.

DD has a fairly easy college day on Wednesday with just one lesson at 11.00. She will still have to go in for tutor but will have a free 9-11 so she can check her emails. Then she’s finished at 1pm.

Redhotchillipeppers · 22/01/2024 15:33

DS’s school will be more disappointed than he will I think. They are pinning their hopes on him and the maths teachers are quite certain he will be offered a place. With so many factors involved their confidence whilst well meaning could be misplaced. It sounds like his peers are also expecting him to receive an offer. It’s a lot of pressure for DS to carry, especially since the school only sends a handful to Oxbridge each year.

Savourycrepe · 22/01/2024 16:18

DD is at a school which sends about 20% to Oxbridge each year. She’s not particularly expecting an offer, but would find it difficult finding out alongside others who do get in. I wish they would send the emails in the evening rather than during the school day.

chickenpieandchips · 22/01/2024 16:32

@Redhotchillipeppers that's a lot of pressure on him on what could effectively be the roll of a dice. Do the teachers not see how it could play out if unsuccessful. Hope they are right though, but if not he will very likely be happy wherever he goes.
In my day my teachers told me I wouldn't get in. That was a great phone call I had to make to my teachers when I did. Almost like a pretty woman dress shop scene! (Oxford results came out before Xmas, and no emails back then!).

BiancaBlank · 22/01/2024 16:54

Last year DD1 heard via UCAS update around lunchtime, but I think it depends very much on the college and course. She then didn’t hear from the college till Friday, so spent two days wondering it it was a mistake!

Fingers crossed for everyone waiting. These last couple of days are so tough.

Redhotchillipeppers · 22/01/2024 16:59

That is awesome @chickenpieandchips proving your teachers wrong. They clearly had no idea of your abilities and should never have said that to you. Completely undermines young people.

CatBumJuice · 22/01/2024 17:04

So much pressure on them. DD has been asked to give a talk to her school about applying to Cambridge on....Wednesday evening. It's going to be a bit rough on her if she doesn't get an offer, but she doesn't seem bothered. She's going to write two versions, like Boris Johnson's Brexit column...

Maggiethecat · 22/01/2024 17:28

@CatBumJuice - love it!! Your Dd sounds a star.

Livingongin · 22/01/2024 18:23

Nervously waiting here too. There’s 4 going for the same course in his school. He said one really deserved it but he feels he’s on a par with the other two so it will be hard regardless as I can’t see all 4 getting in.

Redhotchillipeppers · 22/01/2024 18:34

@CatBumJuice smart girl

tryingtoenergise · 22/01/2024 18:40

'So much pressure on them. DD has been asked to give a talk to her school about applying to Cambridge on....Wednesday evening'

Of all the days @CatBumJuice. Why choose that evening - are they mad?

That is very unfair on her. I'm guessing that it was just bad luck with the timing, but I think you/she should make sure they realise how unreasonable it is, so that next year they can make sure they timetable their "talks for year 12" with a bit more consideration, checking the Oxbridge timetable.
(I guess it could always end up being a bad day for someone, but with most universities you can't predict when that will be.)

Ragdollcharlie · 22/01/2024 22:21

It's about opposite on everything for my DS. His teachers are surprised he applied, and one said that they didn't think it was for him. So no pressure from his teachers! And although there are some other kids in his school applying for oxbridge, none that he knows, so no pressure from his friends either.

I'm concerned instead that he's not preparing for rejection. He thinks his interview went well, so he thinks he's got a good chance. I don't think it works like that, it's impossible to know how you did, and that TSR graph shows that there's no correlation. But all I can do is support if it happens - we've agreed on a Colin the caterpillar commiseration cake if rejected.

In other news he got an offer from Durham this evening, so he's really pleased about that. Such nice timing as well, it's definitely somewhere he'd like to go.

Hope everyone is doing OK with this last bit of waiting.

mondaytosunday · 22/01/2024 22:33

My dd is turning all notifications off til she gets home from college. Despite being a selective private school with good A level results, they don't seem to send many to Oxbridge (but send a few to the States every year). She's the only one in her year (she left last year) and this year to apply to Cambridge. A few applied to Oxford (no idea of results). Year of only 70 students though.
I feel in limbo even though she certain it's a no.
