@SuperSue77 ah if only it was that simple. It defends, is the answer. Some score GCSEs but lots just need you to pass the minimum threshold (usually 7 7s). And then it's all down to UCAT. Things change every year though. But you do not need all 9s !
I have a student with 7 7s and 2 6s who has 4 offers this year. Strategic applying to your strengths is important.

@SuperSue77 if they do score GCSEs it's the best 8 or 9. But will always include Eng, Maths and sciences. After that textiles counts as much as history.

Huge congrats @MMIMadness - well done to your DS on his offer! So exciting for him to know where he’s going to be in September, and especially to a lovely spot like Bangor. The course there looks brilliant too! Fantastic news

Africa2go · 08/02/2024 22:19

@SuperSue77 as others have said, most med schools need you to have certain GCSE grades to meet the basic entry requirements for you to be eligible to apply at all. After that, each med school has a scoring system to rank applicants for interview. Some use UCAT alone, some use a combination of UCAT and GCSE grades, some use various other factors. Even then, the way unis score GCSEs is different (how many they take into account, whether 9s are worth more points than 8s), you need to go through the scoring systems carefully. If you don't have perfect GCSEs, you just have to target the med schools that don't use GCSEs as part of their scoring (or conversely if you do, play to your strengths and look at applying to those unis where they weight GCSEs - when my DD applied, that included QUB, Nottingham, Leeds, Leicester I think).

Africa2go · 08/02/2024 22:20

And congrats everyone on the offers! Brilliant!

ipredictariot5 · 08/02/2024 22:58

That is brilliant news @MMIMadness
well done to your DS
I have had to burst my DD’s bubble that there was no point deciding if she likes the sports teams kits if she is only at ABC in her mocks - a bit of work to do there ..

Groundhogday2021 · 08/02/2024 23:11

Huge congrats @MMIMadness DS! How very exciting esp as he is so keen on it!

It seems to be the longest wait ever for decisions to be made so it’s rather nice to hear some good news along the way! 😊

Pickupapingu · 09/02/2024 07:53

Congratulations to everyone with offers so far! 🤞for more to come for everyone in the next couple of months. And thanks so much for all the excellent advice and support along the way

MsMAK · 09/02/2024 08:40

Well done MMImadness and everyone else with offers, My daughter also got an offer for Bangor yesterday👏.

Sybill · 09/02/2024 09:26

Congratulations @MsMAK - great news!!

Groundhogday2021 · 09/02/2024 09:59

Well done to your dd @MsMAK ! 🎉

W0tnow · 09/02/2024 10:03

Well done to the offer receivers!

@MidLifeCrisis007 Exeter is my daughter’s dream uni and while any offer will do, that would be her 1st choice.

speedyhedgehog · 09/02/2024 10:59

Congratulations Mrsmak dd! Well done!

Well done MMImadness and everyone else with offers, My daughter also got an offer for Bangor yesterday👏.

Llongyfarchiadau @MsMAK DD!

It was only a few weeks ago I imagined they could both end up there! Will your DD firm, do you think?

MsMAK · 09/02/2024 14:53

Thank youSmile

My daughter is firming, she is away at the minute, making the most of her gap year and I don't think she can quite believe that she got an offer. Is your son firming? I think it'll be quite exciting, there certainly seems to be a buzz around the new medical school. We didn't get to see it as missed the open day but hopefully will get to an offer holders day.

mumsneedwine · 09/02/2024 17:26

@W0tnow I'm sure she is but is your DD aware that she'll be in Truro or Taunton for at least a year if she goes to Exeter ?

@MMIMadness that's just the best news. Huge congratulations.

He will be firming - he's away until next weekend!

He's been working and now it's half term he's away until next week. I'd like him to book an offer holder day too now.

It is now two years in Truro or Taunton for medical students at Exeter. Not sure when it changed but definitely the cohort of medics who started in 2023 need to spend 2 of their fives years there.

Mumofboys2006 · 10/02/2024 08:21

Congratulations to all those with offers!🙌🏼

Has anyone else here applied to Birmingham? DS didn’t get a real indication of their timelines so would be useful if anyone else did.

mumsneedwine · 10/02/2024 08:53

@CharlieSJ I knew most did 2 years, but I thought a v small group got 4 years in Exeter. Fairer if they've changed it. To be honest I'd love 2 years in Truro ! There's a direct train to Edinburgh if anyone interested 😂

OP posts:
Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 10/02/2024 14:06

A few Exeter students do just have one year in Truro, particularly if there are exceptional circumstances such as high level athletes.

ipredictariot5 · 10/02/2024 19:41

Anyone applied Manchester ? TSR couple of posts from people with rejections but no news here

mumsneedwine · 10/02/2024 19:47

@ipredictariot5 few students have. Not heard anything yet. No news is good news 🤞

OP posts:
opoponax · 10/02/2024 19:48

@ipredictariot5 Manchester typically make offers quite later. Three years ago but DS applied there and got his offer mid April which was when the vast majority of them came out.

Congrats to everyone on the offers.
