The other thread is nearly full so I took the liberty of starting a new one...

mondaytosunday pictures are very definitely a thing used for History interviews, as well as texts. I can quite see that that could easily translate to HSPS. Niece interviewed for HSPS and it was only conversation in her case but an applicant has to be prepared for anything to be given to them as a cue. Classics might have a vase or painting of one or a coin or an obscure English (yes English) poem or a text. My advice would be not to think advice on online videos is comprehensive. They mix it up for a reason, to solicit unrehearsed responses. On that basis I don't think mine watched any online videos, certainly not that they mentioned. Keep an open mind/ best of luck to your DD.

mondaytosunday · 26/11/2023 12:16

Thanks @goodbyestranger. I actually do now recall that an official Cambridge mock interview on YouTube did show the 'applicant' a map (about migration I think).
The interview is online - I wonder if she'll need to print it out if they do give her something? Our printer is in another floor to her room...
Expect the unexpected is good advice too! Written assessment tomorrow 9am 😬😬!

Ironoaks · 26/11/2023 13:46

@goodbyestranger I hope your DD is able to get her wrist sorted soon

HoneyMobster · 26/11/2023 14:52

Sorry to hear that @goodbyestranger - is it her writing hand?

Lovely trip to Oxford to see DS1 and DD in their show yesterday. DD had a leading role and sang her solos beautifully. Nice dinner with them afterwards as well.

We're picking up DD next Saturday for the holidays and DS1 is going to come home for the weekend for some R&R. He looked exhausted yesterday.

goodbyestranger · 26/11/2023 18:09

Thanks Ironoaks and HoneyMobster. No not her writing hand but it is her rowing wrist.... I just hope she's sensible about doing whatever it is she's told to do tomorrow after the x-ray.

Must have been a lot of fun seeing two of yours together in the same show HoneyMobster.

DD4 just messaged to say she'll come back home on the 9th. I can't believe it's end of term already - it's absolutely flown.

HoneyMobster · 26/11/2023 18:29

This term has flown. It's been our first one with an empty nest and it's been quite nice! With DS2 away I've been let off all the early morning training lifts and have lots of time to do 'me' stuff. DS2 won't be back from the US until the 23rd. He's been having a lovely Thanksgiving with a family who adopted him for the holiday.

Panicmode1 · 26/11/2023 18:36

Poor DD @goodbyestranger - hope tomorrow's X-ray gives answers and it heals quickly.

DS has 4 supervisions and a project to hand in before the end of term..plus an internship interview in Oxford on Friday morning, and then boat club dinner in Cambridge onoff on the Varsity ski trip on Sat! He's then heading up to Notts to see his sister so I won't get him back until mid Dec I think, when term ends for the younger 2 and DD will be home. Can't wait to have a full nest again 😊

We lived in America for two years (Fort Knox then California/ Mojave Desert). People over there were almost ridiculously welcoming to us, esp at Thankgiving.

goodbyestranger · 26/11/2023 18:48

Thanks Panicmode1.

There's certainly some advantages to empty nest but it's completely lovely when it fills up again. I never mind different stages, they all have their plus points.

Malbecfan · 26/11/2023 19:53

I hope DD4's wrist is ok @goodbyestranger

My DD2 was unsuccessful in her job interview but seems remarkably unbothered. I don't think she fancied living in that part of the world.

I'm a bit jealous of all those whose DC are coming home soon. I'm collecting DD2 on 17th then driving to my dad's, staying overnight there then bringing them both back on 18th. DD1 still has lab work that week, so is completing that then going to her bf's parents' house. They are going to a concert in London so DD has booked a train back here on 22nd. I doubt she'll stay til New Year, but it will be good to see her.

Panicmode1 · 26/11/2023 20:04

I'll probably be moaning about them being home, 48 hours after they all settle in and they are constantly arguing over silly stuff @Malbecfan 😁

mutterphore · 26/11/2023 21:04

@goodbyestranger I'm so sorry to hear about your poor DD4's hand and the less than satisfactory experience at the doctor's. Hope she can get it X-rayed and treated soon. Massively frustrating for her not to be able to do rowing at present. I hope she gets lots of offers from her various internship interviews in the meantime.

@Panicmode1 good luck to your DS in his interview and his very busy life!

@Malbecfan sorry to hear your DD2's interview didn't work out but it sounds like it wasn't meant to be.

@HoneyMobster how brilliant to see both your DCs in a show at Oxford. Sounds like a great time for your all!

I'm jealous of those who still have DCs at university, although it's great having my DCs here, nevertheless. We're now one term into my DCs being back at home doing their law conversion courses and they're missing Ox and Cam so much. Their time there went far too quickly and the contrast between busy, sociable lives full of interesting essays and extracurricular activities and this current phase of 'mildly' intense law course alongside yet another round of TC/ Vac Scheme applications, with even less hope this time, isn't ideal for either of them.

DS1 (C) still hasn't had a degree certificate from Cambridge but so far, the law course hasn't thrown him out, although there's nothing in writing to say he can stay on without an official degree certificate.

Hope all those still and Ox and Cam are enjoying themselves, despite the hard work. Happy Bridgmas and Oxmas!

beeswain · 27/11/2023 06:27

@goodbyestranger hoping dd gets her x ray promptly and isn't in too much pain..
DS had an insane number of interviews this week, with one on site selection day thrown in. He hasn't decided when to come home, he's waiting until this week is over and he had a clearer idea where he is up to. I'm hoping for an offer soon so he can have a proper rest!

Scoobyblue · 27/11/2023 08:32

Had a lovely evening yesterday in a misty murky Oxford watching dd sing in a wonderful chapel carol service. Feels like Christmas is really on the way now although dd won’t be home until the 16th December.

Panicmode1 · 27/11/2023 08:57

That sounds magical @Scoobyblue I really wanted to go to DS's college carol service but because his end of term is so manic, I wasn't able to....will have to plan better for next year!

Oxford and Cambridge sounds lovely at this time of the year, despite the weather. DD had Bridgemas celebrations this weekend with her corridor mates and secret santa. She is phoning home less now, so I guess that's a good sign?

DD's head (and mine) have seen so much into the A levels and UCAS/Cambridge process this year, but we have no clue about summer placements and internships (is that for a full year?).

She is a term into the NatSci and feels like she is only just settling in, so we hadn't thought about applying for summer jobs/placements/internships at all.

Is it too early to think about these? We have no clue about the processes, where does she even start?

ofteninaspin · 27/11/2023 11:30

No rowing must be so frustrating for your DD @goodbyestranger. Hope she gets a diagnosis and effective treatment very soon.
DD and DS are really enjoying their Lind based post uni lives. DS’s social life is divided between London and Cambridge. Several of his social group are fourth years so there are balls and other events to attend. His girlfriend (fourth year engineering) has secured a fabulous grad job offer so celebrations there too.
DD was delighted to be sent to Oxford last week to attend a conference as a “grown up” on behalf of her London consultancy firm.

ofteninaspin · 27/11/2023 11:31

OnePlusOneEquals · 28/11/2023 08:34

Anyone know of a NHS dentist in Oxford that is taking on anyone new? Kinda need an urgent app for DS.

OnePlusOneEquals · 28/11/2023 09:08

He’s sorted - after trying 6 others first- good grief!

PermanentTemporary · 28/11/2023 09:28

@OnePlusOneEquals glad to hear it! I managed to lose my Oxford NHS dentist place and what a nightmare.

Ds is soon to have his 3rd interview for a paid placement next summer in London. I hope he gets it but what a palaver. This firm only recruits from their interns - i suppose that makes sense.

OnePlusOneEquals · 28/11/2023 09:41

Thanks @PermanentTemporary bit of a nightmare, he’s never had any problems with teeth and always has every check up. Oh well, these things happen.
Good news on the interview though, hope it goes well. My DS is applying for some for next year, understandably not many on offer for those just finished 1st year - but it’s good for practise if he doesn’t get anywhere this time around.

goodbyestranger · 28/11/2023 10:48

Thanks for all the good wishes, wrist wise. DD4 has had the x-ray and it's not actually broken which is good. She just messaged with her graduation date - booking opened today.

HoneyMobster · 28/11/2023 12:16

We have DS1's graduation date as well @goodbyestranger 😀

goodbyestranger · 28/11/2023 12:37

We're on (lots of fingers crossed etc etc) for Friday 26th July. An afternoon graduation, much more civilised :)
