I wanted to get a news thread ready for everyone as you wake up in the Uk.

We are settling into a routine of talking to DS on FaceTime on Sunday mornings after our breakfast, which is early pm his time. It is so nice to see his smile and catch up on how he is doing. I know at some point he will have a bad day, but so far he seems to be doing so well, I am ridiculously proud.

Hope you all have a good week!

Hasn't the time flown? It's really quite scary! DD is doing MFL so once her YA is over she'll have another year at uni.

Lovely to resurrect this thread again and hear the latest news. It’s getting surreal that they are so close to finishing this year.
DD finishes her long placement next Friday then breaks up for Easter week after. It’ll be head down for dissertation writing then and applying for her two year ECT that will hopefully start this September.
We know graduation is September but no date as yet. Very annoying that a uni that has so many teachers graduating that they’ve chosen Sept which is when they will be in their school working.

On another note was I the only one to read @ZittiEBuoniHello, all in a Jim from Friday Night Dinner voice? 😂

Shalom, Jackie, shalom 😂

DD has just over a week to go of this term. She has done the last non-timed essay. Three last week plus appearing in a show, running a new writers group, lectures, supervisions and meeting with her dissertation supervisor, it was a mega crazy week for her. Some of her friends don’t get three essays in a term let alone a week.

Dissertation will be submitted at start of Lent term, followed by a few weeks of revision, then exams, all these final parts count for 70% of the grade so a lot riding on just a few weeks.

We have DD’s graduation date a few days into July. She then has to vacate her room the morning after so we’ve booked an hotel for the night after the graduation, we’ll pack up her room and head home. All seems a bit rushed and sudden after 3 years.

DH and I went to see DS in Utrecht this weekend - he’s having a great time during his year abroad and it was lovely to see him there and meet some flatmates too.

I felt sure he’d find somewhere to live back in Newcastle next year and he has so good to know that’s sorted too.

At the moment he’s not sure at all what his plans are after uni but said he doesn’t think he wants to do more studying. I feel fine about him - I get the feeling he’ll sort things out 😊

DD is home for Easter from Saturday for four or five weeks then when returns submission of dissertation (only non-exam assessed piece of her entire three years) then two weeks of classes and then exams, graduation date set for 3rd July. All seems to be coming to a close, new chapters hopefully opening up.

Feel awful for those young people and their parents who haven’t been so lucky with the meningitis outbreak. So tragic. I know we discussed vaccination on one of our earlier threads before our YP went off but not all could afford it and it is no guarantee. Relieved DD is vaccinated but still asking her to keep an eye out for herself and for friends.

NotDonna · 17/03/2026 20:13

It really is so very very sad! And regardless if vaccines they do need to be very aware of signs of meningitis but also septicaemia as it’s so often missed!

Interestingly dd was emailed by her University with advice on what to look out for. I think it's great that they are being proactive.

Perfectnightssleep · 24/03/2026 20:15

How are any of your dc who are grad job hunters doing? My dc has a four year course so is starting the search in the autumn and we're a shade worried!

Downsidesupside · 25/03/2026 00:00

Dd is very chilled about the process at the moment. She's creating her C.V this week having handed in her dissertation yesterday.

She's really organised and has a timeline she's planned to meet all deadlines. She's focusing on this for now and has said she will take any job to start with.

I think at the moment, we are quite chilled.
