Annnddd they're off! Uni Starters 2023 Thread.

Hi all,

I thought I'd start a different thread as the Alevels and beyond one is more geared to remarks and clearing at this point so didn't want to start derailing that with chat off packing and freshers week.

How is everyone getting on with helping their DC prepare and the idea that soon they will be moving away?

My DD is off to Cardiff to read psychology so will be about 3.5 hours drive away. I'm both nervous and excited for her right now! Packing is going well - pretty much all stuff has been bought and the induction pan set should arrive today. There is a large pile on the landing which keeps growing as we think of extra bits.

Due to a very lucky spot by me when scrolling Tiktok DD has found and been added to the Cardiff Psychology year 1 snapchat group. From that she got chatting to some others who aren't massively into drinking or clubbing and they have another chat for people who want to do other things than clubbing. They are organising meeting for some of the SU 'Give it a go' events such as an escape room and Ikea trip! Dd has also persuaded a couple of people to join the Hookers society with her (for crocheting! 😄).

Dd had a terrible time with bullying and social isolation from year 5 till the end of sixth form so I am praying this is the new start where she finally finds her tribe 🤞🙏

Looking forward to hearing how everyone's DC is getting on and how the first few weeks are for them. Not long to go now! DD leaves in 20 days 😬

We're off on a week's holiday tomorrow, so we'll have one day between getting back and going to uni. Not sure if this is a great idea (pressure off, last hurrah with dd) or a big mistake...

Dd is in Senghennydd Court. Looks like a prison, but is the closest to town, so should be ok. Cardiff was her insurance, so she didn’t get any choice in accommodation. She wanted en-suite and parking, but tough tits! I’m just happy she got a place in halls. A lot of people didn’t. She likes a good piss up, so hopefully Senghennydd will be party halls too!

Now I’m panicking, thinking I’ve missed buying him something, but he’s plenty of shops near by and we only live 40 minutes from Cardiff, so I’m not too worried. Oh god, me too. I am notoriously disorganised, so I have told dd to make a list of everything she wants to take and we will tick it off when we put it in the car. I am so sure we will forget something! We are 2.5 hours away, so not as if we can drop anything off.

Ooh interesting, we were going to leave the mattress topper til we're there but at that kind of bargainous price I think we'll just go for it.

I feel like I'm drowning in lists right now. We're 3.5 hours away and it's in a charging desert so an even bigger undertaking in an EV. Really need not to forget anything crucial.

@catrescuelady ahh my DD too. She’s on the train home now so haven’t had the full low down as yet but said via text that ‘it’s been good’. Hopefully your DS found it worthwhile too. She’s also moving in on Sat 17th.

£12 for a mattress topper! Bloody bargain. The SINGLE one I got DD was about £40 (maybe I return it???)

Can I join? DS2 has inherited kitchen stuff from his brother and can have some spare bits from us but his Aunty has given me money to get him something and I’m thinking new duvet, cover and bath mat would be practical!
those going to York will have a fab time - DS1 loves it. DS2 is off to Southampton as are some of his friends from school so will at least know a few people when he gets there. It’s going to be very strange with both of them gone though.

They really don’t need that much so no need to panic. These threads put me in a panic with DD1 but really it’s just bedding and a few kitchen bits. They can sort their own clothes and decorative bits surely! Amazon is available once they are there. I ordered a few things to be delivered later on if they needed it.

Oh god, I've not been back to Mumsnet for a very long time.... but IM NOT READY FOR THIS!!!!! DS is off to Nottingham for history and all the fun Ancaster hall can present... apparently I'm not allowed to come visit. I'll take that as a good sign that he's looking forward to it.

So far dd has a pan set, 2 each of dinner plates, cups bowls and tea plates. A cheese grater from ds1 and a washing up bowl.
She may get around to packing some clothes this week.

There is a dunelm 3 minutes away from her halls though...

Can I join please? DS1 is off to Southampton Uni for Business on the 23rd. I'm beyond excited and have dragged him round IKEA and Dunelm. He is not showing as much enthusiasm! he keeps reminding me that it's him going to uni not me 🤣 I'm impressed that some of the DDs have already sussed out who they're in Halls with! I could barely get him to do the induction this morning.

Anyone else's going to Southampton? (Saw a PP on DS2 going there so looking forward to expert tips :) )

Don't forget to pack emergency supplies of berrocca, paracetamol, bottle opener, mini first aid kit, mini sewing kit, obligatory box of condoms 😉 ...

The first thing I gave dd was a box of condoms!

I live round the corner from Southampton uni, it's such a lovely campus and your dcs will have a great time here.
