A levels 2023 - Results day and beyond

Hi all. I thought I’d make a new thread as the countdown one is filling up.
Results day is here and I’m sure we will all value each others support, today and for the next stage of their journeys.

Definitely worth a re-mark. Priority costs more but should be back within a week.

aleC4 · 18/08/2023 21:52

Thanks everyone.
I am so relieved and so is he. The atmosphere in the house has changed in minutes.
The degree apprenticeship is with Rolls Royce. They have multiple apprenticeships, each with over 100 people who were offered a place. From what they said there were far more people below the requirements than they had expected so I guess it taking a while for them to decide what to do.
We're pretty sure he'll be a no because he missed the points by a fair bit.

Yes. Unless you are a select band of SLT (which you may be, so apols if you are) you should never see results before 8 am.

You might want to check your sources. I can assure you that my role requires that I look at level 2 and 3 results the day before they are released. Schools don’t just put results in envelopes. We work hard to get students where they need to be in terms of next steps / transition.

Piggywaspushed · 18/08/2023 22:00

My source is I am a teacher! Absolutely no sight of results til 8am.

MurphyM · 18/08/2023 22:01

Is that legal? A level results stay on their CV for years. I wonder if groups of parents could overturn the decisions made to make adjustments?

I’ve started my own thread about this but thought I’d add it to this thread too as seems to get more traffic.

My dd is having a huge panic about this and I’m hoping someone with more knowledge can help.

dd had two offers after getting lower than expect A level grades, one from her insurance choice, which she decided wasn’t for her and one from her first choice uni for a different course.

she decided that she actually wanted to do a different course (not the one offered) at her first choice uni and so applied through the clearing hotline. She had an interview today and was offered a place. She accepted and got an email from admissions saying telling her that she would need to refer her application through clearing. To be released in to clearing she had to decline her other offers.

when she declined her offers, the one from her first choice uni stated the name of the first course, but after she had declined it it said she had declined the name of the new course. She has added the new course to her ucas now, but it’s still pending.

now she’s having a massive panic that she’ll loose her place. The uni said she would have to release herself into clearing and refer her application through clearing by midnight tonight. So she has done what they asked, but she’s panicking as the declined course now says it’s the new one and ucas was saying it updated, but she swears it was still the name of the old course until after she declined it. Would it just update without going through clearing?

is there anyone that can help reassure her? She’s done what was asked of her but can’t get through to anyone to speak to until Monday.

sorry if this is confusing. It’s been a stressful couple of days

Things do take ages to update through the hub. Did she give her clearing number to her preferred choice university course? Does it have it listed as clearing accept? Or confirmed firm? Or waiting for university to accept?

Piggywaspushed · 18/08/2023 22:02

If your role is HOSF or SLT or exams officer, you are allowed. Otherwise, no.

MurphyM · 18/08/2023 22:04

I mentioned to other thread. I wonder if groups of patents could start the petition to this unfair grade boundary this year.

Right! The original question was 'do teachers see results before the students?'.

Museya15 · 18/08/2023 22:22

I'm so proud of my daughter today, she got 2 Cs and and a D, she's now waiting to hear if it's enough for the nursing degree she's applied for.

LaDeeDa123 · 18/08/2023 22:24

@SlightlyJaded Hull university has geography in clearing. I think it’s human geography too. I don’t want you to feel confused and overwhelmed but if I was your dd I would definitely have a serious look at it.

Zilla74 · 18/08/2023 22:31

Big Congrats to your son!

my DD is dyslexic and studying maths too (just going into 2nd year - it was such a long road to get there. So great to hear that other dyslexics have done well!!

MarshaBradyo · 18/08/2023 22:48

I’m so proud of Ds and relieved. I had my first gulp he’s moving out moment today.

FarEast · 18/08/2023 22:52

It was a government decision to move over 2 years back to pre-pandemic grade boundaries. Most educational experts are on record as saying that doing it so quickly is a mistake. Of course pandemic adjustments and mitigations can’t go on forever but this has been too abrupt!

Hawkins009 · 18/08/2023 23:02

What has happened with the grades this year? Seems quite a few eg A* etc then getting lower grades

Right! The original question was 'do teachers see results before the students?'.

JCQ (the joint council for qualifications) explicitly released guidelines last year saying results files are confidential to "head of centre, exams office staff and senior members of teaching staff".

It also explicitly said "results must not be divulged to or discussed with other teachers".

So no, if the centre is following the rules, regular non SLT staff should not have access to the results.

PupInAPram · 18/08/2023 23:42

I work in a school in a role related to exams and data. Other than Head of College and Deputy Head, teachers absolutely do NOT get to see results ahead of students. In a large school maybe 2 support staff are involved with downloading and printing of grades on pre-results day. There is an exam results embargo for all but the select few staff, which we do not lift until 8am on results days.

MurphyM · 19/08/2023 00:01

I'm sorry but the predictions might be slightly optimistic. At my DS's school, almost everyone got as predicted (thus, we argued thier strictness of predicted grades, but the school didn't change.)

poetryandwine · 19/08/2023 00:57

For avoidance of doubt:

Research intensive universities have only a small amount of leeway in the academic calendar. The UK cannot get out of sync with the international research rhythm. By tradition many of the most important international conferences, meetings and working groups take place over the summer.

It would be impossible to maintain our research reputation if term time included July or August, at minimum.

I know some PPs understand this.

I have not noticed any posts from teachers offering to re-organise the high school calendar. My working groups also produced viable ways to do this (which we doubted stakeholders would much like, and did not feel it was our place to promote).

Yes, thanks. I know this. I wasn't asking the question. Someone else did. Someone said yes, and I said no, we don't!

But am grateful for evidence and back up!

stilldumdedumming · 19/08/2023 06:45

@SlightlyJaded it took over 24 hours for ds' place to confirm on UCAS after he realised they didn't have his grades. I hope you get some clarification today.

I noticed @LaDeeDa123 mentioned Hull. Ds visited Hull too. They were pretty impressive actually. They pride themselves on looking at the whole person for admission not just grades. The campus is lovely too. And they were really welcoming. Worth a look maybe.
