Following on from the A level support thread I thought I would create one for results day.
Hopefully you will all join me for the long nail biting wait and the big day at the end of it!

Spare a thought for Scottish pupils receiving their Higher and Advanced Higher results TOMORROW (my DS included).

Starting to feel a bit nervous now although he and many others are sitting on unconditional offers having applied with last years Higher results.

PacificState · 07/08/2023 07:52

Good luck @Aurea and all Scottish Highers peeps

tribpot · 07/08/2023 07:53

Good Luck. Hope all goes well.

i did Scottish highers back in 1980s!

ZittiEBuoni · 07/08/2023 09:27

Good luck to all dc in Scotland!

@NotDonna that sounds a bit shady! No wonder your dd is anxious about it.

Nugg · 07/08/2023 09:51

Good Luck to all those receiving results this week - the news this morning was not helpful was it - saying how less "top grades" are expected - nice little nerve wracking ramp up to results day for our poor off spring!

NotDonna · 07/08/2023 09:51

@ZittiEBuoni
Oops!! DD got that TOTALLY wrong! Massively misunderstood a friend recounting their story of last year. Because their DC was panicking after exams mum called school at the end of term and school said that if DC was nervous about how they’d done, it was better to avoid the 30 minute drive to school if they wanted their help with clearing. No one knew before. DC just lost confidence in themselves and they hedged their bets and sat outside school when it opened and before results came through.
Im now wondering if we do the same as also a long drive to school or take our chances in doing it at home (if necessary).

Lowther · 07/08/2023 09:52

Good luck to those receiving results tomorrow.
Here we have had a few ups and downs. DD is very low and I have been worried about her. The good thing is that she has communicated about how she feels but I have been worried to leave her alone and been making sure she is occupied and going out with friends etc. A trip to the doctors too. She is making a plan B now. I think it is the long wait that is not helping at all. She had spent a few days at her firm, like the faculty and has made some friends and they keep in touch via WhatsApp, so she is still hoping all will go well and she gets what's she needs.
It's going to be a very long week here.

NotDonna · 07/08/2023 09:53

We’ve known all along that the results are going to be in line with 2019 so they were due to take a big dip compared to 2022. I’d like to know how they do compare to 2019 though.

NotDonna · 07/08/2023 09:56

@Lowther that’s hard! A trip to the GP good idea and keep her busy & chatting to you. Really not easy. Sending love.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 07/08/2023 11:24

I've got a day out with dd tomorrow so over breakfast we will have a bit of a chat about how she is feeling about it all.
It's a bit weird....I want it to be done and dusted so she knows properly where she is going.

I've kong thought that there is no real reason for uni to keep the same academic year as schools and they would be better off starting in Jan so students can all get their grades THEN apply knowing what grades they have.
And it would give them a few months to prepare and maybe work to save.

SertralineAndTherapy · 07/08/2023 11:28

@DrMadelineMaxwell Whenever I try to explain the UK system to foreign friends, I realise how ridiculous it is! I'd support a move to applying after results, whether that means shifting the university year back, or the exams forward. But there seems to be too much inertia in the system.

Good Luck to all those receiving results this week - the news this morning was not helpful was it - saying how less "top grades" are expected - nice little nerve wracking ramp up to results day for our poor off spring!

The Times started their annual "pre A-Level results" articles last week - as usual focusing on grade inflation, international applicant preferences etc.

Not sure how they'll manage to keep going for 10 days, but it does rile up their elderly readers with their "things were better in my day" comments

ZittiEBuoni · 07/08/2023 11:44

Ah, @NotDonna , that's fine then! As you were Grin.

Definitely avoiding all media coverage of this year's results...

tizalinatuna · 07/08/2023 12:52

Does anyone know if universities adjusted their offers in accordance with lower results, or if they just offered in line with experience of last two years? I know there is some desire for shrinkage at RG universities as they took on so many with AAB. Will they use the higher offers as a way of restricting numbers?

tizalinatuna · 07/08/2023 13:16

Ah read this in THES
“Highly selective courses which over-recruited in 2020-22 have been more cautious with offers this year,” he said.

“It could mean they fall slightly short of their intended target, so either will show more leniency to existing offer holders who fall slightly short of the necessary grades or have some spaces in clearing.”

PacificState · 07/08/2023 18:30

Solidarity @Lowther It's really not fun, I've had some times like that with one of mine. Very hard to cope with the building pressure when there are other health challenges in play. Hope the GP is useful.

I stupidly read the Times story and got fretful before giving myself a shake. I quite like the Times but they know exactly which stories will make middle-aged women click!

ono40 · 08/08/2023 09:36

Good luck to all those in Scotland receiving their Higher/Advanced Higher results today. I had a wobble yesterday when I saw the news articles on grade deflation but reminded myself that DS hasn't even applied to uni this year. He starts his full-time waiter job tomorrow to save money for travelling. Hopefully this will take his mind off the next week!

kackle · 08/08/2023 13:02

The Scottish results have dropped. But not quite to 2019 levels

There's been a slight drop in the number of pupils being awarded A's, B's and C's in their exam results - but numbers are higher than pre-pandemic levels.

More than 140,000 young people across
Scotland are receiving their grades for National 4's, 5's, Highers and Advanced Highers.
77.1% of pupils were awarded an A, B or C in a Higher.

That's down from 78.9% in 2022, but up from 74.8% in 2019.

NotDonna · 08/08/2023 13:14

Thanks for the stats @kackle Good to know.

SertralineAndTherapy · 08/08/2023 13:21

I'm on too many threads, but I read on one of them that this is precisely what the SQA said that they would do, well in advance.
