Still waiting

Dd waiting for Edinburgh, will go if she gets a place and has A levels looming.
I know they've said most offers will be out by 30 April so only one more week although they do have until 18 May but for the love of god I wish they'd pull their bloody finger out!
Apparently it's the same every year, it just adds extra stress and distraction at a time when she could do without it.

Back in the day when I applied (a long time ago!!!), we could only hold two offers at any one time ie when offer 3 arrived, you had to drop one of them etc. If they reintroduced something like that it would give the universities a much clearer and earlier idea about acceptances and stop some applicants like your daughter hanging around for months.

LIZS · 20/04/2023 13:10

Have you look at the admissions stats on the UofE website? You can see past offer/acceptance rate, by subject and funding stream There has been a tightening of number of offers made after a bulge year in 2021 which caused issues with capacity. Last year their offer deadline was mid May.

bguthb90 · 20/04/2023 13:11

@GU24Mum That sounds like an excellent approach

bguthb90 · 20/04/2023 13:37

@balzamico did your DD get an email from Edinburgh saying their aim was to get replies complete by April 30 ?

balzamico · 20/04/2023 14:48

@bguthb90 I'm not sure, it says it on their website. She's logged into her MyEd account today but it says nothing. I know it's not much longer to wait but I'm not the most patient!
Not to mention the fact that their offer holders day was a fortnight ago.

My DD is still waiting to hear from the Uni of Cental Lancashire. They sent her a message about 3 weeks ago saying they were still deciding. She sent her application in early October. Very frustrating.

Usingnamechange · 20/04/2023 15:12

My DS kept waiting by Durham til mid May last year. He applied early October!

Gardensaremyworld · 20/04/2023 18:46

What are your daughters predicted grades @balzamico?

I ask as there have been a spate of rejections lately. It’s a positive that they’ve not heard yet from that point of view

Edinburgh was the last university my daughter got her offer from, her first offer (Bristol) was within 48 hours
She’s not been to visit either as preferred to spend the time revising but I believe has still put it as her Insurance choice

Fingers crossed your daughter hears some good news soon

Weddingmum · 20/04/2023 19:21

My DD still waiting for Durham, had an offer from Edinburgh just before the offers day, but Durham would be her first first choice so it's very frustrating as she is having to hold an Edinburgh place that could go to someone else!

FriendlyLaundryMonster · 20/04/2023 19:55

Ds is still waiting to hear from St Andrews, and if they offer, he'll have some thinking to do, so in limbo here too.

Weddingmum · 21/04/2023 08:23

Fingers crossed for good news today for everyone still waiting!

balzamico · 21/04/2023 11:37

@Gardensaremyworld (love your username I feel similar)
She's predicted 3xA*, she also got an offer for Bristol within a couple of weeks of her application last October - such a long time ago!
Apparently the Scottish kid's exams start next week, it feels really unfair to have this hanging over them then.
I think a reform of some sort is in order, they've a lot on and could do with having offers sorted way before they take their exams.
She was rejected from Oxford but at least they give a set date for the offers and rejections which was only a few weeks after interviews so the whole process felt v quick.

My dd heard from Bath today, psychology placement course, Astar, A A. Relief to hear at last.

Haveyoubrushedyourteeth · 21/04/2023 14:39

My Dd was in the exact situation with Edinburgh a couple of years ago. In the end, despite her having her heart set on there, she withdrew her application because, for her, it was too much the not knowing.
From what I've heard since, it seems a lot of kids withdraw for this very reason, which obviously makes it easier for the university. Fingers crossed your Dd gets her offer very soon.

balzamico · 29/04/2023 16:15

Another week has passed and we're still waiting for news from Edinburgh!!

She contacted them this week and they said there was no news and that the hoped to get most offers out by the first week in May - so they've moved the goalposts. She's has one friend get an offer and one (predicted 3xA*) rejected this week for different courses. It's only a couple of weeks now til the deadline but I will be steering ds away from these late offerers in a couple of years time.

OP posts:
bguthb90 · 29/04/2023 16:29

Same here @balzamico . I'm starting to think Edinburgh's strategy is to wait until May to see how their applicant pool reduces, by self-withdrawals, before they start making offers

TheFallenMadonna · 29/04/2023 16:34

DD is waiting for a decision from Warwick.

FriendlyLaundryMonster · 29/04/2023 16:53

Ds's final response came in today, a rejection from St Andrews. At least now he can firm his first choice and get on with the rest of the process.

redrobin75 · 29/04/2023 18:48

A friend of mine has a ds waiting for first choice Edinburgh and his IB exams start next week. So unfair on the dc.

Weddingmum · 30/04/2023 09:21

I can see on the spreadsheet that Edinburgh are still making offers/rejections where as there is no activity on the Durham one. someone posted on the TSR that 5th May last year was when lots of decisions came out so hoping we will hear by then. My DD contacted Durham and they just said she would hear by the 18th May, by which time she will already have started her exams!

balzamico · 01/05/2023 23:02

Edinburgh rejected my dd today, plus a load of others from what I can on TSR 😔

Haveyoubrushedyourteeth · 01/05/2023 23:14

Hope she's not too disappointed OP. I know it's cliche, but genuinely it's their loss. Very best of luck to her in her exams.

hornetgirl · 02/05/2023 12:47

My son is hanging on to hear from Edinburgh for Biological Sciences. It is so frustrating, he could have firmed up his offers elsewhere by now and applied for accommodation elsewhere rather than be stuck in this limbo since October 2022!

My DH wants him to pull out of Ed and firm up for Southampton, but I have said we need to wait as DS wants Ed the most.

I am so unimpressed with Edinburgh's admissions team. Even Cambridge made more effort to communicate when rejecting him LOL.

Weddingmum · 02/05/2023 15:33

@hornetgirl I feel your pain, I think Durham & Edinburgh are playing who can leave it the latest to make an offer game! Fingers crossed it's good news for your son. After waiting for so long for Durham every day that passes I think perhaps she'll be rejected at the last minute:(

mondaytosunday · 02/05/2023 18:10

It's for an Art Foundation diploma not a degree but my daughter got fed up with waiting for UAL to get their finger out and has accepted a place where they gave her a two weeks deadline to decide. She was leaning towards it anyway but how poor is it for a world renowned art school to add to kids' stress knowing full well they are now doing their Art A level this week? I do not see how they, and Durham or Edinburgh or wherever people are still waiting, can justify the delay.
