@opoponax Any update from Bristol as yet?

opoponax · 22/03/2023 17:29

@kackle still on hold! There were some rejections sent out yesterday.

kackle · 22/03/2023 17:31

Still on hold here too.
No further hold emails either

MerchSwyddEfrog · 22/03/2023 18:21

My son didn’t get into Cardiff either @IGoWalkingAfterMidnight . We are just waiting for Liverpool now but he thinks it will be a rejections as well. I think we were unprepared too and he probably didn’t prepare enough for his interviews. We have lived through an awful year this last year and this will have effected his performance I just wish we had notified the universities of our circumstances but I never thought we could. Oh well he seams very positive about a year out and I think it will be really good for him. He can concentrate on his a levels and then start working towards acing his ucat and also start learning how to drive as that has been on hold too. His friend who applied didn’t get in either, he’s a quiet lad too who works extremely hard and is incredibly bright.

MerchSwyddEfrog · 22/03/2023 18:23

Anyway it’s not all doom and gloom, here my son is now researching how much money he can make on his year out and how he is going to invest his child trust fund money!

buckleten · 22/03/2023 18:33

Still on hold for Bristol here too, but Southampton offer came through today thankfully!

opoponax · 22/03/2023 18:52

@MerchSwyddEfrog I'm so sorry Cardiff didn't work out. If Liverpool doesn't come off, it sounds like your DS is an ideal candidate for nailing it next year. Mini @Monkey2001 (times two) and mini @coffeeandbiscuittime are proof of that.

Congrats on Southampton @buckleten !

Good for him... sounds like he has a very positive attitude. Hope Liverpool works out for him but it sounds like he will be just fine either way.

Monkey2001 · 23/03/2023 00:29

@MerchSwyddEfrog sorry to hear about Cardiff, but great that he has such a positive approach to a gap year. My DS got a brilliant job as an Assistant Physiologist at a local hospital - it was advertised on the website of our local hospital. He has stashed away enough money to make his time at university more comfortable!

ASeagull23 · 23/03/2023 06:58

All comments about disappointment and rejections resonate here after DS received a rejection from Nottingham (she felt her best interview). So impressed to hear the rallying and positivity about gap years which my DS was starting to think about too. Yesterday afternoon she received an offer from Southampton and was in tears of joy (as were her parents). Still waiting on Bristol and Manchester but now with much less anxiety. What an awful drawn out process of selection for a career which you would think would be seeking out candidates and welcoming them with open arms. I have not slept well for weeks now but fortunately DS appears more resilient than me. Congrats to those with offers, and best of luck to those families waiting for that first offer.

Meant to be using DD not DS🤣

opoponax · 23/03/2023 07:10

Brilliant news @ASeagull23 . Congratulations to your DD ⭐

Monkey2001 · 23/03/2023 08:47

@ASeagull23 yes, that first offer after the awfulness of medicine applications is a massive relief! You only need one - a mantra which has become very real to us this year!

jasminetrampoline · 23/03/2023 10:18

Happy news. many congratulations to all those DC receiving offers. Best of luck and fingers crossed for those still waiting.
DD had an offer today from Southampton, and she is absolutely over the moon. She has an offer from ARU already and loves both of them, but we are fairly local to Southampton so I am hoping she gets the higher grades they ask for and goes there, as Chelmsford is a long way from here. She is still waiting to hear back from Exeter, but now the stress and drama is gone. I sort of hope that she doesn't get an offer from Exeter as then there is no more decision making for her to do!
She tells me that on SR people are going wild with stress and angst. This really is such a harsh process for them all, esp when their friends are going through a completely different experience applying for other degrees. None of DDs friends are applying for medicine. Some of them assumed her predicted grades must be really low when she was the only kid they knew with no offers, and were shocked to find out how high they really were.

Cratos · 23/03/2023 10:41

Congratulations to all receiving offers. Best wishes for those still waiting !
We are still waiting to hear from Liverpool.
Without the support from this group, this period could be a lot more stressful and difficult therefore I would like to thank all our experts and everybody else for their time and for their very helpful insight.

MedicParent · 23/03/2023 11:42

Congratulations to those receiving offers and huge commiserations to those with rejections. Feel as crushed as you like! It's a hugely competitive ordeal.

Quick shout again to say if anyone's DC gets a Leeds offer, ask me anything 😁

toomuchlikemyusername · 23/03/2023 14:48

Congrats to all with offers and commiserations to those who have not had the news they were hoping for.

Our update is that DS has had an offer from Leicester which he is pleased about, so we've booked the offer holders day and I've spent a few hours this morning getting up to speed on accommodation for there and Bham. We might head to either at the weekend for a bit of an exploration in advance of the offer holder days.

kackle · 23/03/2023 17:28

Lots of happy tears here. Bristol gateway med offer came though at 1650

Havent heard back from Keele post interview but plan to withdraw to allow someone else a chance.

Thank You to each and everyone of you for your support and advice.

Just waiting for Bristol here then have to make a decision. Currently have Plymouth and UEA.

My son is a first year medic at Newcastle if anyone has any questions then feel free to ask

Hi, l'm asking for my cousin, recently rejected from Birmingham. Could you please offer some advice on interviews. Thanks

mumsneedwine · 23/03/2023 17:41

@kackle woo hoo !! And to everyone else with offers. For those still waiting, hang in there. Our last offer last year was on results day. If have nothing by then there is still a chance. I'll come back and explain the plan a bit later on but it does work sometimes !

justjuggling · 23/03/2023 17:42

Congrats @kackle @ASeagull23 @toomuchlikemyusername @buckleten @jasminetrampoline and your DC. Good to hear the happy news!

Commiserations to @MerchSwyddEfrog and @IGoWalkingAfterMidnight . Sounds like both your DC are already planning their gap year and I will keep my fingers crossed for their applications later this year.

DD got an offer from UEA today which surprised us as we thought all the offers went out a few weeks back. She got lower offers from BSMS and Exeter so plans to stick with them.

Conventgirl82 · 23/03/2023 17:53

There is no doubt about the highs and lows of applying to Medicine. The whole system really is a lottery. Just wanted to give those who have been rejected some encouragement. My DD decided in sixth form to apply for Medicine in a gap year. She then didn’t get the grades so couldn’t apply; plans to resit were quashed by Covid as she was classed as private candidate so couldn’t receive CAGs; no gap year travel, Covid impacted first year etc, etc. She graduates this year and has just had four offers for Medicine – one postgrad and three undergrad (she has firmed the PG so places at Newcastle, Southampton and Cardiff gone back into the pot). She has worked the night shift at Tesco’s, volunteered on wards, trained as a vaccinator and done countless vaccinating shifts. She is a completely different girl due in large part to her experiences, of having to be resilient, of having to work twice as hard to get there. For those DC who haven’t been successful this time – use your gap year well – get experience in healthcare, you are 18 now and there are many more opportunities. Start the process early – the wheels in healthcare roll slowly. You will mature, you will come back fighting and this will be reflected in your next round of interviews. For you parents – sit down, take a load off, stock up on wine and carbs – you’re in this for the long haul. My DDs route has not been ideal – I wouldn’t recommend it – it’s much more competitive but I just wanted to send encouragement and say that you will come back from this. As the mighty Rocky Balboa said “It ain’t about how hard you get hit, it’s about hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.’

opoponax · 23/03/2023 18:23

@Kackle that's brilliant news! Bristol is your DD's top choice isn't it? Celebrations tonight I hope ⭐

Just want to repeat what @Cratos said, without this group it have been a more difficult process to navigate. I am very grateful for those in the know who take the time to offer guidance and support to the DCs and parents (I have been on the group a long time but name change every now and then).

buckleten · 23/03/2023 19:20
