@Africa2go sorry to hear about Nottingham, hope one of the others comes through soon. It is a brutal process.

Thethingswedoforlove · 17/03/2023 15:36

@Africa2go so sorry to hear re Nottingham. We are waiting for liverpool too.

justjuggling · 17/03/2023 15:54

@Africa2go sorry to hear about the Nottingham rejection and how upset your daughter is. It really is such a tough process. 3 other possibles still and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that she gets an offer from one of them - you only need one!!

justjuggling · 17/03/2023 15:56

Is anyone going to an Exeter offer holders day? Although DD has been totally BSMS focussed til this point, she’s now ‘curious’ to visit Exeter as we were unable to attend an open day there.

Pip4764 · 17/03/2023 18:23

@Africa2go oh I’m sorry about Nottingham, so hard on these guys! Stay strong, something good will happen!!

LeChatChat · 17/03/2023 19:09

medParent have a dd at Imperial (not doing medicine though - I'm here for her sibling 😀) - Acton halls are popular as they are modern, spacious, good community, many with ensuites and relatively cheap - have friends with children at Bristol and Nottingham who are paying the same or more!

Daisysway · 17/03/2023 20:57

@Monkey2001 ..I've watched both your sons go through medic applications...(my dd is doing Biomed by choice).

UEA was definitely my Uni of choice when we looked around it has so much too offer...Norwich is a lovely city and the UEA campus whilst dated is wonderful in the summer...and plus points - not to far from the coast.

Norfolk people are really lovely, slightly slower pace of life but ideal for a Dr in training...good luck to your DS.

We went on the open day and DS has an offer but we can't get down there again. Happy to let you know out impressions but someone with more knowledge might come along!

opoponax · 18/03/2023 01:01

@justjuggling @MidLifeCrisis007 has a first year medic DD at Exeter. She might be able to give you some insights.

Just popped on to wish everyone luck in offers (and choosing). I remember it so well. My alcohol intake went up significantly 😆

My child is now second year at Leeds, so if there are any questions about that, I'd be happy to help. She's really pleased she chose Leeds.

Smiling quietly about the chat about in person offer days though. Ha. We didn't get those three years ago. No in person open days either 😆 Fwiw, although I'm sure it's nice to see the places, none of the covid cohort got that opportunity, and from what I understand, the drop out rate during first year wasn't any different. I think wherever they end up just becomes the best for them.

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 18/03/2023 06:03

That is reassuring @MedicParent I have said though to dd that hopefully any of the places she chooses will be right for her. She spent quite a long time narrowing her options. The course structures are similar. She just needs to get the grades now!

Hi. Some lovely news, and sorry about those rejections. Only need one ....
Happy to help with vet questions too 😊

Just a note of encouragement from a practicing medic here around "they only need one". I only got one back in 1994, but have been a happy and successful doctor for 23 years good luck to everyone.

opoponax · 18/03/2023 20:43

Thank you for your encouragement @Dyslexicwonder . It's good to hear about positive experiences, particularly with all the news coverage about junior doctor pay etc. at the moment.

Sheffield offer day today. DD really enjoyed it. She is buzzing, we are just shattered. Oh to be seventeen!

Peachy2005 · 18/03/2023 21:32

@opoponax Glad your DD enjoyed it. DD is not 100% sure we will go to the next Sheffield offer day but is wondering what they covered in the Clinical Skills session. Thanks!

opoponax · 19/03/2023 12:40

@Peachy2005 they mainly covered the structure/content of the placements to develop clinical skills. They talked about the current suspension of full body dissection and how they are working hard to resolve the issue and hope they can get it sorted by September. If they can't, they will use alternative teaching methods. They can't give any guarantees on timescales.

UEA offer holder day was also very good. I was interested to observe that most of the families we spoke to had gap year applicants and most only had one offer. I think UEA must look for something different to what the others want!

Really enjoyed the UEA offer holder day. Loved the chilled out vibe and how proud/ passionate about the uni the staff were.

My dd applied for the gateway year and when speaking to the course leader, she said they were overwhelmed with the number of applications and each and every offer holder has done exceptionally well to secure an offer this year. She also confirmed they had taken a cautious approach with their number of offers

I really feel like UEA is hidden gem of a med school tucked away in Norwich. I can really see dd there and loving the campus experience.

Sluj · 19/03/2023 16:06

I'm so glad you liked UEA, wait till you see it in the sunshine with the BBQs at the Campus Broad ( lake)
It was by far the friendliest University we visited with DS1. Other students stopped to see if they could help if we were looking at the map, the canteen ladies wished him good luck, the security man jumped in the back of the car to direct us to a secret parking place and the whole place just felt chilled and safe. My DS had 3 offers but felt at home in Norwich.

DS2 went looking all over 3 years later for a non medicine course but decided nowhere felt like UEA so he ended up there too. He spent his spare time surfing and out on the broads, plus plenty of parties!
My medic DS is FY2 now - got his first choice of deanery and one of his top ranked combinations. It's a great place to be for 5 years

HostessTrolley · 19/03/2023 21:25

@medparent dd is year 4 at imperial, she lived in halls in Acton in year 1, she enjoyed her year there and met her year 2/3 flatmates on the tube commutes into uni, she didn't live with anyone from her first year flat.

mill ask her about the dbs but I wouldn't imagine it would be the basic one

opoponax · 20/03/2023 09:32

@medparent my friend's daughter (Imperial - Chemistry) is in her first year in halls in Acton. She is really enjoying her year there and easily found people to flat share next year.

Thank you for the inputs @LeChatChat ,@HostessTrolley and @opoponax
Yes. Acton halls are popular.
DD has started getting invite for Offer holder days from Imperial. All the offer holder days are online and there are several of them for different topics on different days. She was saying she would have loved to go in person for the offer holder's day.

MerchSwyddEfrog · 20/03/2023 19:27

Apparently Cardiff offers are coming out. I’m so worried for my ds as he hasn’t heard yet. We have had a terrible year and just need for something to go right. God I’m worried and more upset than he his. Having a little cry.

IGoWalkingAfterMidnight · 20/03/2023 19:51

@MerchSwyddEfrog Where have you heard that Cardiff offers are coming out?

I hope everything goes well for your DS - mine is waiting to hear from Cardiff too.

He hasn't has a rejection or an offer from Exeter or heard from Keele at all re an interview - I'm stressed and anxious and trying to hide it?

I haven't been checking on these threads because of my worry so there are very many people who should have congratulations x

Ame45 · 20/03/2023 20:59

Back in July I posted on this thread as my DD had messed up her UCAT. Received lots of good advice and support here and she has just had an offer from Cardiff so thank you all .
You just need the one!

MerchSwyddEfrog · 20/03/2023 20:59

Heard it on The Student Room, loads of offers. My son has had 2 rejections so far, 1 pre interview and 1 post interview. We are waiting for Cardiff and Liverpool. I thought he would have a good chance with Cardiff as we are Welsh and he said his interview went well. I’m so worried that he will get another rejection and it will crush his spirit. He’s such a lovely lad, so caring and kind and he works so hard. He would make a great doctor. Life feels so unfair at the moment and it seems that everyone is having good things happen apart from us. I’m just so worried.
