@Pip4764 amazing news!! Congratulations to your DD

Cathpot · 08/08/2023 19:42

@summersession @Pip4764
Such lovely news! Good to think about how happy you must all be- it’s a long road and they have done so well

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 08/08/2023 19:56

Congratulations to those with confirmed places 👏

BungledBundle · 08/08/2023 23:31

@summersession @Pip4764 Well done to your DC! Such a great feeling. I dreamt about the results last night Shock! But DD got the results she was hoping for and a confirmed place at Dundee. So pleased for her (and me!)

Thank you once again, everyone for all your generous help on these threads and good luck next week for the English results.

Pip4764 · 09/08/2023 07:19

@BungledBundle thank you and many congratulations to you both as well, it is such a quick turn around from not having a space to 4 or 5 weeks later leaving home. Indeed thank to everyone on here for their support.

Congratulations to everyone getting Scottish results. We are still waiting for A levels here. It does seem so much to organise in a short time. Dd hasn't done anything other than the paperwork and accommodation request so it will hopefully be a busy few weeks getting everything ready. It probably is different if going for a course which requires lower grades or if there is a difference between firm and insurance offer but for dd it just feels like all or nothing.

Thethingswedoforlove · 09/08/2023 18:50

also a big congrats to those who have places firmed
this week. Soooo exciting for them all. I agree with @Unexpecteddrivinginstructor that it feels like we will have so much to sort in not much time if our dc are successful next week for those still waiting for results on 17/8. I am not hugely optimistic for my dd but trying to remain calm and rational! She has done so well to get this far so holding on tight for the last bit of this part of the journey. I’m aware that’s only just the beginning if they are successful but let’s cross this bridge first! All the best to everyone

opoponax · 09/08/2023 20:52

Congratulations to @BungledBundle 's DD. Fantastic news.

It all comes together quite quickly after results day. I remember with DS wondering how we were going to get it all done in such a short space of time but it all came together. Enjoy the results day, let it sink in and then hit the shops with a big list. We bought most of the things in one day. Fitting everything in the car was a bigger challenge!

So pleased for all the confirmed offers.

Can I just check what the experienced mums / teachers would recommend for Thursday? DD's offer is AAA, she thinks she's got it. No back up, rejected 5th offer, wants to do a gap year / re-apply if something goes pearshaped. Is there anything, realistically, that we can do at 8am on Thursday if she doesn't get the grades / they reject her? Have said it might be worth a phone call to the uni, obviously she'll need to book UCAT, and she should check Clearing in the highly unlikely instance something appears. Other than that, is there anything that can be achieved by us being there with her?

We have twins - at 2 different schools - Twin 2 might need some more assistance if (non-med) offer not met.

mumsneedwine · 10/08/2023 14:31

@Africa2go if DD doesn't get AAA the only thing you need to think about is how close to grade boundaries she is and, if close, ask for a fast relook. Then contact the Uni (both firm and insurance if have them), and ask if they will hold her place until result comes back.
It's unlikely that anything appearing in clearing will need less than AAA (as other students will have this). But always worth a try.
I'd not worry about anything further until after Thursday. If she is going to reapply you have time to gather thoughts etc (booking UCAT would be priority),

Africa2go · 10/08/2023 14:35

Thank you, I've just looked at spaces for UCAT and there is very little - I am presuming that some students will have booked in case they don't make the grades for re-application, and then cancel ifthey do in fact get their grades. Otherwise its a road trip to get one in Septmber! Thanks for our advice, as always.

Africa2go · 10/08/2023 14:36

*your!!

mumsneedwine · 10/08/2023 14:56

@Africa2go some will be cancelled when people make their offers 😊. Fingers crossed you never need to know that.

We’ve booked one for mid Sept with the intention of hopefully releasing it back end of next week

How are we all interpreting the quote from the head of ucas that most have got their choices?

Monkey2001 · 13/08/2023 06:59

Late catching up here! Congratulations to @Pip4764, @summersession and @BungledBundle . Are you OK @wontsleeptonight ?

It is not so bad for us just waiting for 1 result (DS didn't do Bio or Chem in Y13 so has just done Chen as a Y14). I think he might he be working on results day though.

Hope the stress levels are under control for those waiting, birth students and parents!

coffeeandbiscuittime · 13/08/2023 12:05

Congratulations to all those who have firmed offers from highers.
It's a tough time.
Just hoping that all get the grades they need.
DD just needs her resit in chem, as there is no plan B!
We got her parts remarked last year as she was 6 marks off an A, cost a fortune and she only gained another 2 points.
She has conceded that she never did any extra work for chem last year- no past papers as she always got A star in mocks- hopefully this year she has done enough .
The year out has been really good for her, like @Monkey2001 DS they have earned money and worked in the 'real' world.
Good luck all.

mumsneedwine · 13/08/2023 13:31

@coffeeandbiscuittime @Monkey2001 will be thinking of you on Thursday. In school from 7.30am to sort out any near misses, and see if we can squeeze a couple more in.
Just been to visit my own F1. Striking obviously.

coffeeandbiscuittime · 13/08/2023 14:13

The strike is causing chaos in our hospital, although the hospital I work in has a lot of ACP's which has helped maintain a level of service , the department I work in is an ACP led same day emergency care centre where we also teach med students ( caveat - we work at an advanced level supporting the drs, nurses and other HCP's for the benefit of patients - I am not a Dr).
I firmly support the Dr's in this strike, it's ridiculous the amount they get paid - nurses gave in and accepted a paltry pay rise I so hope the drs don't.
Good luck to your F1 DD @mumsneedwine

mumsneedwine · 13/08/2023 17:21

@coffeeandbiscuittime as my DD ended up doing a 13 hour on call shift, as the only doctor on the admissions ward (others were in surgery but did WhatsApp her), I am so angry that she is paid £14.09 an hour.
Exit route already been planned if pay rise and better conditions don't happen. Pretty much every F1 and 2 seems to have a plan to leave.
PS. DD says her PA is wonderful 😊

mumsneedwine · 13/08/2023 17:22

That was on her 2nd day.

opoponax · 13/08/2023 17:26

@mumsneedwine it is shocking. It makes me really cross when people say they are only junior doctors and training and that they get paid better later on. How many people get that level of responsibility in first jobs after studies. Not many. I am always talking to mine about exit routes although I am not sure how much they listen - yet.

OP posts:
mumsneedwine · 13/08/2023 17:29

@opoponax it's madness. Nothing junior about anything they do in their first week.
Let's hope someone listens quickly - before they all leave.
And to all out prospective medics, know what you're getting into, know your worth and be prepared to join the fight.
Good luck on Thursday - I'll try and be here as much as I can to let anyone know about Unis with places.

Monkey2001 · 13/08/2023 22:35

@mumsneedwine I wish I believed anyone was listening. The govt mantra is "we can't afford 35% pay rise" and they just can't turn it this and see that doctors can't afford the 35% pay CUT either! I was also horrified when I realised how little control they have over their lives (time off for important events, geography, choice of specialism).

Peachy2005 · 15/08/2023 18:27

We are en route to London, flying abroad tomorrow. Just realised exam results are not on our first day in Tokyo but when we are mid-air 10 hour flight 😳Oh well, can’t be helped now…hopefully we will have plane WiFi! Wishing everyone all the luck 🍀

theinnergame · 15/08/2023 23:13

Dd has gone into verbal overdrive - normally very independent and self-contained but currently just burbling out all the thoughts she has... thank goodness her wee sister went on a sleepover tonight or they would have been arguing. Need to keep them apart tomorrow...
