When should my DS apply for finance if he is taking a Gap year ? This year or next year 🤔?
I cannot believe how much student accommodation vary by city and by type etc.

I know Bristol admissions said that requests for deferred entry were welcome as long as it was done early. So good luck @Cratos
On our way to Newcastle offers holder day - and then it will be decision time. DD was taken with Hull so we will see.

Thank you @coffeeandbiscuittime

mumsneedwine · 24/04/2023 19:10

@Cratos if definitely taking a gap year then you apply next year.

Yes, the London/not London rates do not reflect the huge range of costs. I believe Durham has spiralled and St Andrews people are desperate, so most of the centre of town is over £800/month, some places £1,000/month, all with bills on top, but even people willing to pay those prices just can't get anything. Although it feels like Bristol and Manchester are heading the same way, it can't really be as bad as a big city will always have some accom. I think Sheffield, Nottingham, Leicester, Newcastle are all great. A friend I support is going to Bangor - that is a good place if you are on a tight budget.

notnowbernadette · 24/04/2023 21:33

Keele medical school is a great option for anyone worried about accommodation cost or availability. First and second year medicine students get priority on campus and off campus is pretty affordable on a student budget.

curvymummy · 25/04/2023 09:10

Leeds looks to be c. £6.5k halls - anyone have info on accommodation costs after 1st year?

MedicParent · 25/04/2023 09:52

@curvymummy there are still cheap accommodation options in Leeds for second year onwards. They are mostly around 35 minutes walk from the med school. They tend to get organised and sorted before Christmas time in first year, but there's lots of movement still in the spring.

My daughter wanted close to the med school and her own kitchenette and washer/dryer and parking, so we pay more for that. But as she's never needed to buy food out and about, or needed the bus, she's saved a bit that way at least 😆

If your kid is mature and capable, as lots of medics are, they do find the student antics quite annoying. Parties, clogged up sinks and maggots in the bin aren't much fun when you just want to make yourself a sandwich and get to placement at 8am.

That's why most medics I know live with other medics (which can be a bit intense) or a smaller share of two or three people, or alone. That has cost implications, but I still pay less for my daughter's studio flat than a shared house in Bristol or Bath would cost.

curvymummy · 25/04/2023 12:32

Thats really useful, thank you @MedicParent. Can I ask which halls was your daughter in in year 1? Tannery is closing, and not sure which would be next best option?

MedicParent · 25/04/2023 14:03

A bit outing, but she was at Devonshire Hall @curvymummy

She wanted catered, and loved it. The food was great (better than boarding school I think) and she really enjoyed the few formal dinners and the nice surroundings and quads. And the chickens.

From Dev, there's a branch train station that's easy to get to for placements on York side of Leeds. That was helpful. She didn't take a car until the start of second year

It was also quicker to walk to the med school from there than most of the other halls, which are further into Headingley, so she didn't much get the bus. I think a brisk 30 minute walk or so. But she did want closer from year 2 onwards. On an evening she needed an Uber, but tended to find people to share with.

On her first day she met her best friend (a non medic!) who was placed in the room next to her 😁

Decorhate · 25/04/2023 21:02

@curvymummy My Dd also stayed in Dev in first year. From 2nd year onwards she was in a variety of shared houses in the Hyde Park area. First year was a mix of people from halls, as the years went by it was mainly other medics.

Her rent was around £330 per month, probably a bit more now.

Cratos · 26/04/2023 08:25

We are on our way to Bristol offer holder day. Bristol accepted my DS s wish to defer. Fingers crossed for all DCs and for us too.

Just a bit more @decorate 😁

Dev is fab though. I'd highly recommend it to anyone going to Leeds.

Fab news @Monkey2001 !

And good luck to anyone still waiting! DD was saying that very few of the dozen or so applicants from her school have got offers - one got one from Cambridge but rejected from Bristol, Edinburgh and their other, while two others have offers from Newcastle, but she thinks that's it.

My DD has now firmed Glasgow, insured Newcastle (lower contextual offer - Glasgow's isn't), turned down Edi (which was her true 2nd choice but better to stick with the lowest offer just in case), applied for student finance and accommodation. And run the London Marathon Smile. So now it's just making sure she gets the grades, so head down for the next month!

FedUpOfThisDynamic · 28/04/2023 08:41

Ugh that congratulations was to @Africa2go ! Sorry, but congratulations!

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 28/04/2023 08:47
