Daughter finally got an offer from UCL after rejections post interview at 3 others. She had already started planning for a gap year.

No coincidence that this was the only one of the four musical schools to do interviews in person. She enjoyed the interview process there while the on-line interviews were ordeals.

Super news. You must be thrilled!

wijjjy · 19/04/2023 23:50

@MrsBennetsPoorNerves, @Monkey2001 , @kackle

Thank you for your kind words. Yes, she is thrilled and we are very happy for her. After interviews it was the one she wanted to go to, but weeks of people announcing UCL offers on The Student Room had made her pessimistic.

When she was there her fellow interviewees were a friendly, mutually supportive bunch and that really made it for her. She is buzzing waiting for her offer holders' day.

BungledBundle · 20/04/2023 13:55

Hello again, I wonder if I could ask for some more help? DD has been lucky enough to get 2 offers from Dundee and Aberdeen for 2023. However, she very much wants a gap year and is unsure how to approach to ask. (She thinks if she were refused, she would go this year.)

Her reasons are that, because of the ways the Scottish school year works, she is still fairly young - turning 18 over the summer - and thinks a year doing caring specific work would help her mature and be more ready for the demands of med school. I am also wondering if she is not 100% certain this is what she wants.

I presume she just has to email and ask straight out via admissions? There is no good way of asking the question?

Is this a bad idea? I think DD is worried about losing her original offers, but this can't happen, can it?

Monkey2001 · 20/04/2023 13:58

@BungledBundle she absolutely can't lose the offers! Her reasons are great, she should send an email to Admissions asking whether it would be possible to defer her offer to start in 2024 and stating those reasons. They will either say yes or no, but will not withdraw the offer.

BungledBundle · 20/04/2023 14:15

Thanks @Monkey2001 . It feels quite risky, just in terms of 'marking her card' if she does go this year but I think she will have to do it. Many thanks for your help.

Monkey2001 · 20/04/2023 17:14

@BungledBundle it won't "mark her card", only the Admissions people will know about it, and it is a very positive reason anyway.

Cratos · 21/04/2023 10:12

My DS wrote to Liverpool and Bristol about his request to defer. Liverpool said that they could not make a decision on this yet and my DS needed to contact them again at a later date. Let's see how Bristol will respond.

BungledBundle · 21/04/2023 12:19

Thanks again, @Monkey2001 and @Cratos . Best of luck to your DS, Cratos, with the decision/process.

I know Bristol admissions said that requests for deferred entry were welcome as long as it was done early. So good luck @Cratos
On our way to Newcastle offers holder day - and then it will be decision time. DD was taken with Hull so we will see.

Pip4764 · 22/04/2023 08:29

Good luck with all the offer holder days and subsequent decisions!

Felixinthefactory · 22/04/2023 16:27

@RockyHorrorShow We went. Thought the course and pastoral care sounded good. Seemed to be quite a few students with multiple offers. Daughter has achieved grades and has firmed, so is definitely going there. What did you think?

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 23/04/2023 15:12

DS has firmed Birmingham and insured Sheffield so released an Exeter place into the mix!
Now trying to navigate the health and immunisation forms which are as clear as mud.
It helped once we realised that BCG vaccine related to TB.... but don't thinks he's had that and the form suggests he needs it on one page but that they will do it after admission on the 2nd.. Hep B seems non compulsory but he'll prpb start a course if we can get through to the GP at some point....
Not even started DBS yet.. awaiting email!
On upside finance app sent off and registered for accomodation but can't book until Results day

mumsneedwine · 23/04/2023 15:43

@Lottsbiffandsmudge don't worry about vaccines until they get there (unless they have specified they can't start without them). The Uni will get them done for you. Kids become a bit of a pin cushion in first half term.

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 23/04/2023 15:55

Thank. the form seems to suggest he has to have MMR (which he has) and then on one page suggests he needs BCG but then on the next contradicts themselves saying they will do it... think I'll get him to email them!

toomuchlikemyusername · 23/04/2023 18:00

@Lottsbiffandsmudge
My DS has firmed Birmingham too. He had booked to start his HepB course but then was told this will be done by the Uni once they have started, so cancelled. You might want your DS to get them to confirm this with them directly but don't go rushing into spending money on this too quickly.

Has your DS made any decisions about accommodation? We are trying to decide, I've told DS to shortlist his preferences and we'll then work out whether it's affordable or not...

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 23/04/2023 18:33

@toomuchlikemyusername thanks for that info! So have you sent the form in with just the MMR info?
We looked at accommodation today. But they have changed it so you can't book until results day. He's filled in the form and bio. He would like to live in The Vale (he wants to be in the centre of things) which is all quite pricey. (Even their cheap options are pricey!)
We looked at Pritchards which seems lovely and close to med school but they are redeveloping it all and he is worried about living in a building site and some of the new flats won't be ready in time for freshers!

toomuchlikemyusername · 23/04/2023 19:21

@Lottsbiffandsmudge

I will ask DS what he has done form-wise. I am trying to not be too hands on which is tricky but does, I suspect, lead to things not being done quite to the timescales I might do them! I will update once I've had that conversation.

Like your DS, mine likes aspects of The Vale but also likes the convenience of Pritchatts. He does however have long legs so the walk from The Vale isn't as long as it might otherwise be! I am slightly aghast at the monthly cost of some (all) of the accommodation but was heartened to hear one of the current students at the offer holder day yesterday say that a part time job of up to 12 hours per week (likely as a HCA) is sustainable.
At a point in my life where I was starting to see myself taking my foot off the pedal a little, workwise, I suddenly find myself talking of increasing my hours in order to help fund DS's rent! He has however promised to look after me well in my old age 😂

DD is waiting for Southampton offer holder day mid May to decide which uni to pick first. Do we have to wait until she's picked her first and second before doing the finance forms? Thanks wise ones.

Monkey2001 · 24/04/2023 15:34

@RockyHorrorShow housing will be MUCH cheaper and easier to get from Year 2 in Leicester than Bristol. Have a look and see -

Bristol, Worrall Rd (good location, not fab) £204/week

Leicester, Clarendon Park, £99/week

So an extra £5k pa in Bristol for 4 years....

mumsneedwine · 24/04/2023 15:48

@jasminetrampoline no. Do finance now. You can easily change the university named after. But if you delay then finance might not be in place by start of term.

That is a v expensive Bristol house ! DD lives in a beautiful mansion right near Uni and its £165 a week. Lots of her friends pay £125. But Leicester will be cheaper.

jasminetrampoline · 24/04/2023 17:10

thanks @mumsneedwine will get it done asap.

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 24/04/2023 17:26

Leicester halls are certainly cheap! My DS1 is there this year. By comparison halls at Birmingham (DS2 med choice) are eye watering. DS1 also likely to go to Bristol for degree next year so that's 2 at expensive options..... yikes.
