Is there an applying for 2023 thread which isn’t early entry

1000 replies

KittyMcKitty · 01/11/2022 20:35

I can see there’s the Oxbridge one but dd isn’t an early entry applicant.

anyway she’s finally submitted her UCAS I know school have added the reference so imagine it’ll be off in a day or so 🤞🏻

Shes applying for sociology and has applied to:
Durham
York
Lancaster
Sheffield
Birmingham

her predicted grades comfortably exceed all the standard offers so I hope she gets some offers (and please please please let Durham offer!!).

anyone else waiting?

My DD submitted hers to college last night. It has already been checked by her UCAS tutor and teachers so is now with careers dept. Should get submitted to UCAS quickly as I doubt there are any problems (been checked several times!). She is applying for Psychology Bsc at Cardiff, Exeter, Manchester, Bournemouth and Sussex. Exeter and Cardiff are her top 2. Her boyfriend is already at Cardiff but I'm hoping if she gets an offer there she doesn't base her choice on that fact! 🤔

DS applied to Manchester for Psychology and got an offer of AAB last week, so they’re quite quick. Think it was only a couple of weeks, so hopefully they’ll get back quickly for your DD.

He’s also applied to Leeds and Sheffield and is still waiting for those.

First offer in for ds1 from Lancaster so he’s happy. Two day turn around was a stress reliever!

Wow thats really fast. DD2 is waiting on Lancaster, she submitted her UCAS Monday. Her other 4 came back to her with offers (Reading, Chester, Bangor and Lincoln) so they was really fast too. Lancaster is usually 4 weeks, so they must be wanting your DC there! :)

@Ciri My DS1 is doing IR at Lancaster. He loves it. Always glowing about the lectures. 😊

Oh that's good news. I actually went to Lancaster but 30 years ago now!

Grin Lets hope they don't find out he's my child then. I spent most of my 3 years in Lonsdale bar!

Thanks that's good to know. Turns out the college hasn't submitted yet as DD had made a couple of small mistakes. All sorted now so they should submit soon although they need to add predicted grades. Hopefully will go in before the end of the week!

NotDonna · 23/11/2022 22:30

So good to see offers coming in!
DD2 has finished hers and it’s now sitting with school. It’s quite a small sixth form so shouldn’t take long. It’ll be good to have it in.

KittyMcKitty · 23/11/2022 22:53

Where did she decide to apply to @NotDonna ? Hope she gets some offers soon.

Lovely to see offers coming in - and so fast! DS2’s draft PS is done. Predicted grades confirmed as AAB and I think the references will be good as he’s done very well on motivation etc on his report. If he can get an A in the EPQ that would help. Still dithering a bit on uni choices - he’s looking for quite broad social science options so Manchester is a clear choice, LSE and Southampton and I think possibly Nottingham. He may put UCL down as another aspirational. I think he’s got another week to dither in and then that’s it!

troppibambini6 · 24/11/2022 08:18

I posted down the thread about being worried about dd not getting any offers for law.
It turns out he application hadn't even gone in!
I'd misunderstood and her form tutor has been a bit slow wasn't planning in dealing with it until after Christmas which completely panicked dd. She's had a chat with him and he's pulled his finger out now and we are just waiting for the head of sixth form to approve it. It should be in within two weeks.

She worried she's not going to get any offers. She puts a lot of pressure on herself and law is all she wants to do really.
She is predicted 3 A stars
She's won a few debate competitions
She's done work experience with a criminal barrister, city centre solicitors firm and a local solicitors.
Not really sure what else she could do.....

She really wants to go to Leeds.

NotDonna · 24/11/2022 10:28

@troppibambini6 good on her to ask the teacher to do sooner. I’m surprised they want to wait til after Christmas and not get them out of the way. I think for law there’s the LNAT exam but I’ve no clue how that works and if only some universities ask for it. I’m sure your DD has done her research.

@KittyMcKitty she’s paid the fee and meeting with head of 6th form today - it’s been with them around a week. I’m not sure if everyone meets with him before he presses send or if there’s an issue with hers. But hopefully it’ll get off today. She’s applying to Bath x2 (AAA), Loughborough AAB, York AAB. She’s hoping for an alternative offer for both Bath so AAB (1st choice) and York so ABB (ins) due to AS core maths but not certain they will. So she’s left 5th space free for now, and will add depending IF and what offers come back before deadline in Jan.

BruceIsACake · 24/11/2022 11:16

DS now has an offer from Bath, his top choice. They are one of very few unis to use IMD for eligibility for contextual offers which means it's now lower than 3 of his other choices. His course isn't widely available and they either want all A or much much lower, there's no Inbetween. He has an offer from his insurance choice but it's waaaaay lower than he should achieve.

NotDonna · 24/11/2022 11:35

@BruceIsACake so good to have his top choice offered especially at a lower/contextual. I’ve no idea what IMD is but pleased it’s worked quickly. And his insurance too! I’m very intrigued as to what the course may be but understand if you’d rather not say.

KittyMcKitty · 24/11/2022 11:43

Good luck to your ds @NotDonna - dd sent hers on a Friday afternoon and had 4 offers through in 2.5 weeks so hopefully your dd won’t have to wait too long - York we’re the first within 24 hours (excluding the weekend) 🤞🏻for you.

Hope so mckitty she seems really chilled about it all.

Fourcandlesx · 24/11/2022 12:32

One offer so far for law but it has all gone very quiet and Leeds have said they won't be making offers until after the January deadline. He had resigned himself to not hearing from anyone else now until February.

BruceIsACake · 24/11/2022 12:58

IMD = indices of multiple deprivation I.e. lives in a deprived area (at his dad's house, which is where he's applied from). Most unis only use Polar/Acorn measures and his dad's postcode doesn't qualify on those. He's applied from his dad's house (which is where he lives half the time) as his income is much lower so he will get more of the loan. I have twins going to uni so feel justified in playing the system this way otherwise I'm expected to magic up £900 a month to top them up.

He is doing robotics engineering.

ShowMeABrexitBonus · 24/11/2022 13:54

ChnandlerBong · 23/11/2022 09:48

@ShowMeABrexitBonus my ds is also applying for Meng at similar unis. How is your ds getting on? Anything back from any of them yet?

Hi @ChnandlerBong He's had three offers so far - Nottingham and Bristol both A Star AA and Newcastle ABB but option of lower offer from them if he commits to them as firm choice. Holding out for Manchester but it will be A star A Star A if he gets it of course. Apols for the odd bold - using * causes havoc with typing and I can't undo! 🙈.

SmartWatch · 24/11/2022 14:56

DS got an offer from Lancaster today, his form went in over the weekend - as I know some on here waiting for Lancaster. It seems very far away from us in the South but he needs to give it serious consideration as good offer for him. We weren't able to make it to the open day but will go up soon as possible I think. Can those with dc at Lancaster give me as much feedback as possible please :)

NotDonna · 24/11/2022 16:12

@BruceIsACake that makes total sense especially as student finance don’t consider any other children you may have at university.

we visited Lancaster @SmartWatch and it’s also a loooong way from us too. It was really friendly, DD liked it. Accommodation looked the same as everywhere else we’ve seen yet it’s won awards (no idea why). The colleges aren’t what I envisioned as they’re separate blocks. I’d imagined accommodation blocks as the colleges with bar etc. There’s a central area with shops, cafes, library. The staff were very informative, welcoming and very approachable. As I say DD liked it despite it pouring down. I could imagine her there but it’s such a long long way as we are further south than London. Have you seen Warwick? It reminded me of there.

Riverpebble · 24/11/2022 16:27

Place marking

SmartWatch · 24/11/2022 16:51

Thankyou NotDonna, helpful information. We are near London with a quck route to Euston and the train up which maybe helps offset the distance. It does seem a great campus. Good luck with all the outgoing forms and incoming offers to everyone. I know how much blood, sweat and tears (mine) went into it all :)

I think there’s a virtual campus tour on the website.

it’s an amazing university (imo). It’s not for those who want a city nightlife though. Lancaster itself is small and you have to get a bus into the town. In my day there were only two clubs in town, one local and one university run. Each college has a bar and a jct (junior common room). You very much belong to your college. Bar crawls from the top of the spine to the bottom (or vice Vera’s) are common. They’re all different. Grizedale has a lively modern cocktail bar, Bowland is still like a student bar from the 60s. It officially has the busiest Greggs in Europe! It’s a beautiful campus (with some hideous original buildings like a lot of the universities of that era). Fierce sporting rivalry with York in the annual Roses tournament.

Ciri · 24/11/2022 17:07

If you wanted to at Lancaster you could spend your entire first year without leaving campus. Everything you need is on campus (because it’s not close to town).

KittyMcKitty · 24/11/2022 17:08

Yes the virtual tour is really good. Dd really likes the course there and the reduced offer option is obviously enticing.

it’s a million miles from us (South Bucks) but as ds is at Manchester it’s not that far from him.

dd wants to go to an offer holders day as, depending on what happens with Durham it will be between Lancaster and York.
